Just another project I have been working on for some time.....I'm still in the beginning of this work, which will probably be the most detailed drawing I have ever done! At the same time this exact car is having it's 70th Bithday in 2006, hence the title for this thread!!!

    Thanks a lot guys, :)

I have always favoured Bugatti as my personal No.1,as you may have noticed from my username ;)
This particular car (#57374, engine#2S) was the first of the three production Bugatti type 57S Atlantics originally built by Bugatti, and delivered to the first customer in September 1936!
All the three cars built, were later returned to the factory and equipped with a supercharger to make them Type 57SC's!
These Atlantics or Atlantiques were the most exotic Bugattis ever built and remains some of the most beautiful cars on the planet(IMHO) to this day!
This car is owned by Dr.Peter D. Williamson in New Hampshire, USA since 1971 and was recently restored back to "as new" condition and got the prestigeous best of show awards at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in 2003!
Rumour has it that Mr. Williamson was offered 10 Million US dollars for the car just after the 2003 PB show, but turned down the offer.....understandably :)!!!

I always tell people that the one marque that I like as much as Ferrari is Bugatti for it's ability to stir passion in passionate people, admiration in the artistic and sheer awe in mechanics/fabricators. The Bugatti are a consummate expression of human creativity, much as the family that created it.
I love these cars, and this drawing totally captures the passion, art and mechanical beauty of Bugatti.
    As usual, another benchmark masterpiece
Thanks for allowing us to watch its gestation, and I hope these will be printed in a publically available run.

Yes normally I have posted my drawings in the showroom, but this was not a Ferrari so I thought it was better to post it in OFF TOPIC, not to upset anyone! ;) :)

Perhaps I should have wrote "yet" another project instead! Perhaps it sounds easy, but I asure you it's not....not even for me! However it is a great challenge, and that is what I love about doing these :)

Update on this drawing should be ready tomorrow!

we all know Ralph Lauren owns another one since 1985 , so what about the 3rd ?

when did they got so expensive?
currently is it more expensive than a 250 GTO?

Actually Ralph Lauren bought his 1938 Bugatti type 57SC Atlantic, chassis #57591 in 1988! :) Tom Perkins was the owner of the car in 1985!
The third one (1936 Bugatti type 57 SC Atlantic, chassis#57473) is owned by Nicolas Seydoux in France, and has been in his ownership since 1974, when the car was newly rebuilt after it had a grave accident in 1955 where the car was hit by a train in a railroad crossing....both people in the car were killed instantly! The car was totally restored again over a two year period in the late seventies and has been looking pristine ever since then!
All three of the Atlantics have now been restored and they all look like they were just fresh out of the factory!
My favourite car bar none is definately the Atlantic of Seydoux in France, mainly because it is so much different from the two sistercars in the US, and because it has the most interesting history of the three cars built!

The three Atlantics has always ranked among the most expensive cars on the planet, and only beaten by the Bugatti Royales I think!
But then, they are not changing hands very often! :)

    thanks for the info Carsten
why don't you go all the way and post pics of the all 3? please
also ... I guess there are only 6 Royale right?

if so, how many Bugatti were built in Ettore's era? I assume that's a very low number...

Perhaps I will, but if I do I will make a new thread and post the history of the three famous Atlantics together with some pictures of the cars!
Yep....only six Bugatti type 41 Royales were made and all six still exist today! :)
A total between 1800-2000 cars were produced at the factory in Molsheim from 1909 until 1963 when the factory was taken over by Hispano and became part of the "Messier-Hispano-Bugatti" (Ettore Bugatti died in 1947)

that's a very good Idea Carsten
can't wait for you to start a new thread about Bugatti
where all newbies can learn about Veyron's pedigree.

also we can expect the usual bashers complaining about Veyron being a VW
as if Ferraris were still been built by Enzo.
