I just got my Sports Car Market Letter and there is a great article about the retrieval and recent sale of Type 22, chassis number 2461. The car had been at the bottom of Lake Maggiore in Switzerland for about 70 years. The story is that the owner lowered the car into the lake, secured by a chain in order to hide it from authorities that were looking to collect import taxes on it. The chain broke and the car fell to the bottom of the lake.

The local dive club had known about the car for years, but only recently decided to retrieve the car and sell it to raise funds for a charity that was trying to solve the issue of juvenile violence after a member of the dive club was mugged and beaten so severely that he died.

The car was brought to the surface in July of 2009 and sold at the Retromobile Auction, Paris in January of 2010. The car sold for $364K. Yes, $364 thousand.

The purchaser was Peter Mullin and the car will be on display at the Mullin Automotive Museum, Oxnard, California, USA in the first week of April.
