Front landing gear is damaged...On Fox News right now!
Jesus, I literally just saw this on the news and walked upstairs to post this, and there is already a thread with a response!! Apparently the plane is flying to Long Beach or wherever the Jet Blue headquarters is so that employees can visually assess the problem from below. Let's hope this gets resolved ASAP
Doesn't Jet Blue have live DirectTV for each seat? Imagine being on that plane and watching yourself crashland on live TV... Hopefully they've got 'em turned off!
This is a no-brainer for the captain (who is probably 300 times cooler than any of the passengers). A few squirts of foam on the runway and a gentle nose-up landing, piece of cake. More people will get hurt bailing out of the emergency chutes.
I'm watching this too.... out of ALL of the flights, this one had to carry the most fuel. Destination -----> N.Y.
I'm pretty sure it will.. it's gotta be a little scary being aboard it though. The last thing I want to hear is that the landing gear is malfunctioning. C.
I don't think it will be too serious. This has happened before. Theoretically they should be able to centre the wheel from the cockpit - this is how the plane steers while taxiing. It's strange that the wheel moved to this position in flight, because it should have been centred for takeoff. Obviously they've lost the wheel steer connection. I have a photo of a Qantas 747 landing with the front wheel sideways - loads of tyre smoke and two blown front tyres, but nothing collapsed.
Even if it does collapse, the nose of the plane will mostly likely slide along the runway in a shower of sparks. I've seen a video of a 737 landing with one of the side gears still retracted, and the plane still slide along the runway in a relatively straight line, sparks flying off the bottom of one of the engine cowlings. There was a much greater chance of that plane veering off the side of the runway than one where the nose gear fails, and it didn't.
Impressive.. the wheels stayed in place, completely ground down and the pilot ran it straight down the runway. C.
