a movie about a retired driver, played by Pitt, who is brought back to help mentor rookie prodigy Joshua Pearce, Idris’ character, for the Apex Grand Prix team.

For us in the know it´s obvious Pitt is too old for the role, but for the uneducated masses he still could fit. I´m not expecting a masterpiece, I´d settle with something that it´s not embarassing. The standard for "car movies" is set quite low anyway.

Chris Hemsworth one could argue maybe looked a little old in Rush, but he played a great James Hunt.

The pinnacle of all auto racing movies is Grand Prix. If this comes anywhere near it, I’d be shocked.

Gran Prix is an art project. Any plot is an afterthought at best.

Art is good. This has a good story. The main characters have a story and an arch.

I realize this will be a Hollywood special but the movie looks decently good and there are some serious people behind it. I'm looking forward to seeing it when it comes out.

The issue with this film is that it’s inherently polarizing. On one hand you’ll have unprecedented footage of modern F1 in a film. This has not been done since 1966’s Grand Prix. This great footage has an over used, lame Hollywood trope story laid over the top of it. So, there’s seemingly great effort into F1 footage and little effort put into this afterthought trope story line.

    There's that.

Just watched the trailer. The story line is a copy cat of "Driven". Now I liked "Driven" (I'm one of its 8 fans), but just repeating the same storyline isn't that creative.
That said the footage itself looks stunning. It's clear they had full access to the real F1 world and it shows. No fantasy tracks, no fantasy teams (beyond the hero's) and even the accidents look pretty much what real ones look like. So kudos for all that.

As much as we love "Grand Prix", the reality is that its story line was thin and dull too. We just love it for the real footage and glimpse into a world long gone by. The same can be said about "Le Mans" which has even less of a story/character development.

Bottom line: I can't wait to see it on the big screen. I know I'll love it. It's F1 after all.

PS: Loved the dialogue: "When was your last race win?" "Yesterday, Daytona."
PPS: And the love-interest is pretty. Nothing wrong with that.

I disagree in regard to the story line of Grand Prix. It was a good story with character arch’s.

LOL! I like Driven. I guess I'm one of 8 fans, too, lol? The coin scene was creative and the cars look and sound great imo.

This movie I don't care much for, but I'm a huge fan of endurance cars and Daytona Speedway (my favorite track as a spectator...looks boring as hell to drive). I will probably watch it just for the Rolex 24 scenes...

I'll nominate you for club secretary. We just lost one dear member, so we need to try to keep the club numbers in tact. :p

The coin scene was epic and actually fairly real. Great drivers get into the groove and do "super natural" laps. Not that far fetched.

The street race was ridiculous. But hey Gina Gershon made more than up for that. :)

Nice! Stallone was quoted to say the coin bit was a story he heard that Fangio did when studying the role and being around drivers, but no real proof of that elsewhere. Although Fangio I'm sure could do that no problem. :)

LeMans was the best racing movie because it was about the race and nothing else. Simple and clean and with great (for its day) footage. Grand Prix had great visuals but the story lines were pure soap opera. I'm a big Brad Pitt fan as an actor, but the story line for this movie sounds so hack...and I'm sure Lewis got involved so he could get the racial aspect in it. As for "Driven"...Rocky in Nomex doesn't work for me. "Rush" worked for me because the two characters, Lauda and Hunt, and the actors who portrayed them, kept it as honest as possible...though "Opie" Howard's direction left much to be desired. A little known 1955 movie, "The Racers" (based on the book by Hans Ruesch entitled The Racer, based on the life of Rudolf Caracciola.[4]) captured F1 and the Mille Miglia back in those days. Kirk Douglas brought ruthless ambition to the story. Both then (when I first saw it) and now, the Hollywood love story was what it was, and not too intrusive for an 12 year old kid who loved cars.
