I got my pistons (which were NOS BORGO) done by HPC. The CASIDIUM suspension bushings I made from wrist pins (great steel) that were the proper dim cut to length, and they had the CASISUM coating. While waiting for the parts to be made I contacted a suplier of the process who quoted a fixed price of like $20 per part flat fee. If you added a washer, it was $20 more. The suspension bushings (wrist pins) came in with the coating, so I lucked out.
LOL - but the numbers are makin' me nervous!! ...so, no Ti rods. So STOP THAT!! (I am trying to keep "the budget" from disappearing over the horizon) I think James already has the pistons (JE, IIRC) and rods (Pauter 4340 +Billet) in, so coatings can still be applied if there's a noticeable return on the investment, if cost/item isn't too bad. The hardware going in is already what James is using for the TT Testas; I'm just wanting to add some more efficiencies along the way. With all of the lighter parts, it should run, and rev, like never before; the strengths of the new materials and designs will give me peace of mind. At 505g, the Pauter rods are a little lighter than midway between the 360 and 512 rods, so not too bad.... Image Unavailable, Please Login
They sure are purdy rods! Im stuck on Ti unless I keep hitting dead ends lol. How much for those rods?
Took the pinoin out of the gearbox and have been checking the syncros, bearings and gears. I set it all aside for a couple of weeks prior to taking the the gears out this week because I did it again.....I sold my house and a new one is under construction. I was occupied with putting my house on the market and ironing out a deal on the new one (much larger garage which is of primary concern) so the boxer went on the back burner. So this week after the house sold I started messing around with the box. Ill be replacing some syncros, springs and bearings. Ill post pics tomorrow of the progress.
You might as wel spend the time you need & (spend more money on rebuild). Those rods sure look nice. Don't sell boxer though after you get it done. Is the new house close by & how big is the garage? I kick still myself for not getting the 4 car garage built (it was only another $15,000 at the time). When is the move scheduled to take place?
I plan to keep it and take my time doing the build. We move the end of June so plenty of time to plug away on the boxer but it wont be powering itself to the new house I dont think. Its possible but unlikely with everything else going on with the move. The garage is a 3 bay just under 900 sqft, I plan to service ferraris there through word of mouth and see where that leads.
Maybe put your 308 resume together for someone like Ralph Lauren. The patience of those guys. Take-it-apart, fit-it back-together over and over until perfect.
Im reviving this thread because im finally getting back to it (cant believe I started it back in 09!). Between moving and having my 4th child (he's 20 months old and says ferrari clearly so Ive been successful at brainwashing him) and starting my own business I just didnt have time. I also took some time to debate what exactly I should do modification-wise which effected part selection and added delays. I just received my new custom rod bolts for the 512M rods so I can start putting the engine back together. Paul those are some gorgeous bolts. Just glad you left the sleeves on the rest and didn't take any closeups; I don't know how much of that hotrod porn some of us can handle.....
Very nice work Paul.... Your fotos prove that this gb is exactly the same as used als on the Testarossa and rest of the family. Only in that family, the gb had to handle 400+ hp's and not 300 like yours. You can also see the welds in the diff; in our cars that weld came loose as descibed in the various threads. Your diff looks perefct still ! Did you have any problems with this gb whilst driving the car ? Did you take the crownwheel off ? Some of us have noticed that , the crownwheel can be "bent" around the holes due to torque/forces ... Needs to be sanded ath those places before it is useable again. How is yours ? Oooh pretty. I don't want to know how much. They have got to be cheaper than what Ferrari wanted for their though (something around $90 a pop didn't you say?) Keep us posted Paul. Great work as always. EFI the thing
I had no issues other than a slight fork alignment problem that made 4th not as smooth as the rest to engage. Typical grumpy 2nd when cold but thats it. I wanted to prevent the diff failure which is the very reason I started making the carriers, Ive seen failed carriers in boxers plus the sodium valve issue. My gear is fine. Tossing the EFI idea around. What might prevent it is impatience. I want the car on the road so I may settle for CIS with CIS friendly cams, extensive head work and since I may make myself a set of 3.70:1 gears for a tad more grunt! Stomping on a carbed with a stock looking injected car might ruffle a few feathers lol. Yeah its time, I dragged it out of the weeds and mud in my back yard and cleaned all the bird crap off of it.
$55/bolt x 24 is what I paid ARP. Ferrari wanted $3000 for 24 bolts, SPS (makes them for ferrari) wanted $7000 plus the cost of the bolts. It wasnt looking good but ARP came through.
So good to see this resurrected. I know you're glad too! A move, a child, new business, and your semi annual move... yeah, that'll slow the engine rebuilds right down! Keep up the great work. I quite honestly have never been so enthused about new bolts.
