For anyone with rear view mirrors adhered directly to the glass...

If your mirror looses adhesion, 3M has a double-sided tape product called VHB that is compatible as a replacement.

    - You can search and order the specific part for a 1979 Porsche 911 SC. I found it at Pelican Parts, part number 90173113320 for $16.50 plus shipping.
    - You can also order a roll of 3M VHB tape from places like Amazon for around $22.

Here is a YouTube tutorial for applying the VHB tape by 3M. 3M mentions primer and surface preparation products for glass. I didn't use the glass primer, so I will see if my bond is durable over time..

The old tape removes with a non-marring scraper.

Under the old tape you can see how someone prepared the mirror's mounting surface by scratching it. This helps the tape adhere.

I used a razor blade to remove the old glue from the glass.
Then clean the mirror and glass surface with 70% isopropyl alcohol and let dry a minute.
Peel one side of the VHB and stick it to the mirror pad...

Here is how the part for a Porsche 911 SC fits my mirror:

Get in the car, peel the last side of the VHB tape off and stick it to the glass. To minimize airbubbles forming under the tape, I started by "engaging" the top edge of the tape to the glass first, then swinging the mirror down to contact the rest of the glass.

As a follow up... three years to the day! LOL..

The VHB tape has worked really well on 1196.

Our new Khamsin 1224 has poor rearview mirror adhesive, it's all wobbly and fragile. So I unstuck the mirror with WD-40 and a razor blade, and I'm repeating the process with a new 3m VHB pad for a Porsche 911 from Pelican Parts.

    Fun stuff.

Ahah so now we know who bought 1224 after the recent bat auction failed. Congratulations Art:)!

I actually entered that car in the 2017 Bonham's Quail auction for its Canadian owner during my six month stint at Bonham's Motorcars Europe.

I had seen it years before in Reno Nevada when that city's former mayor, Sam Dibitonto, brought it to meet us during Maser Miglia 2000 as we overnighted there between Denver and Monterey. His number plate was...Samsin:D

Thank you, we are happy with it, and making a number of corrections to mistakes by prior owner/mechanics.. always fun.

Sam Dibitonto, now there's a blast from the past. I met him a few times at some of the SF Bay Area Maserati club events. Later on as the internet arrived, somehow I got on his email list for scantily clad photos of young ladies. Those were pretty tame compared to what's out there nowadays ... or so they tell me anyway! ;)

I had this style of mirror mount fail on my 82GTV6 when the dealership in SF (Martin Swig's) knocked the mirror off of the windshield and took out a chunk of glass ... Fun times ...

..Apropos! ... I have noticed the adhesive on my GTV6 mirror is hanging on my about 20% of its original surface area.. slowly delaminating itself from the glass. Which should be a clear hint to me, to replace it with the VHB that can be bought in rolls..
    Onward!
