I picked up a '77 GTB on ebay about a year ago, it's just a roller. No glass, interior, drive train etc. Needless to say, it's going to be a huge project. I've just started to sand down some spots on the body and have found filler in quite a few places, it's very thin and from the underside of the panels there are no obvious creases or other signs of damage. Did Ferrari use filler to get the panels just right? I know this is common practice with most high end paint jobs.

    Thanks,
    Craig

Lots of lead filler and high build primer to make it straight rather than actual bondo. The high build primer can be quite thick.

Craig, They used LOTS of filler on the 3x8s. If you want details, search for 'filler' and '308' in Tech Q&A, that ought to get you a cojple of dozen hits...

The car has no drivetrain and you're worried about some body filler?

    Just curious

If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for it and how much do you expect it to cost you by the time it is back on the road?

I paid $5200 for it. The body is actually in great shape, no damage or rust. I'm thinking it will cost me about 20k to get it on the road, but that depends on what engine/trans setup I go with. I would like to keep it all Ferrari and go with a 348 engine but it's very tempting to go the small block chevy route. I know you guys hate to see that sort of thing but at least I'm not starting with a complete car. It's been sitting like this for many years and I would like to be the person to finally give it some life... even if that means a heart transplant!!

    Thanks,
    Craig

Who said the car doesn't look nice? Even as a rolling chassis the car is beautiful, I can't stop staring at it every time I go into the garage! Which is a good thing since it'll be in there for a very long time!!

I'd say do it right and put a Ferrari V8 in it. The drivetrain is really the whole point of the car - nothing sounds or shifts like a Ferrari.

The early 308s are huge rust traps. Go find a midwest car that's corroded or accident-damaged and rescue the mechanical bits.

    My two lira...

    Wow.....ummmmm...

Lead was extensive to make the door gaps, most of the rest, as Newman says, is high build filler to cover welds and grind marks.....

The Vin for this car is on the RH frame rail....give it to us.....something like

F106AB 'star' XXXXX "star' that's the car you have...

When you get to primer, stop sanding.....any further and it's HUGE work....

Actually, this car is..... uh....as you noticed, mostly missing!

They even took the fuel tanks.......

Actually, you can just make out the serial number in the last picture. It's #20221. I guess I might just have to take it down to the metal, was hoping to avoid that since there are also a few other things it needs!!

You are right! Sorry........that part is painted black originally and not very readable.....

That's a VERY early steel car.............you don't have enough left to see USA vs. Euro.....I guess you can make it anything you want!

Get the wrecked one on the site here and kind of .....'merge' them together.....

Use your VIN for smog purpose and build a 76 Lemans spec carb motor....your most valuable component is the NON CAT sticker!

Going 'to metal' is really not required IMO........get the cracked laquer off and reseal and go on with life............

If you find rust, fix it........

Thanks for the tips BigTex, your the man! I'll look for that wrecked 308.

I'm thinking I may have to sell some of my other toys to get this thing on the road. Anyone looking for a Porsche 944 Turbo with an LS1 swap? How about an '86 Shelby GLHS or an '89 Mirage w/2.0L Turbo Swap. As you can see I like to do engine swaps, I must resist the temptation on the Ferrari though.

Look for the 'worth fixing' thread...it's a clean injected car for 12K or so....just had the front clip wiped off..........his title is now bad....;)

Put your front metal and frame rails on and then'....

"we shot a coat of primer, then looked inside....."
    Steve Earle, Copperhead Road.........

We'll fix that pesky frame stamping, on down the road.........
