WOW - the 7 Series is getting a V6 for the US market (albeit a TT). This is somewhat stunning to me. Typically, I think of the 7 as a beast with a big V8 under the hood, especially given BMW's reputation as more performance-oriented cars. Sure, the 0-60 remains at 5.9, which is on par with the previous generation. However, I think a V6 in the flagship kills the exclusivity. I am disappointed by this choice by the company. It's a similar situation with the Panamera in the V6 department. The lack of a V8 as the lowest cylinder count in the range does indeed allow the price point to drop (from which the company is bound to profit handsomely), but once again, the flagships are always about exclusivity. Surely this is fuel economy driven, but it makes me feel sad - the 7 hasn't had a V6 since the early 90s... Thoughts?

I disagree with you. I went and looked at the new 740 this past weekend. It offers everything the 750 does but it gets a lot better gas mileage while not giving much up on the performance side. I love the 6 cylinder option. Performance is still more than adequate. It gets decent gas mileage 17 city 25 Highway. I wish BMW went a step further and offered the the 3 liter 6 cylinder diesel engine in the 7 series too. I do not believe that less than an 8 cylinder takes away the prestige of the 7 series.

BTW: You can get the 7 series with a 3-liter diesel (w/turbo) here in Europe. Sells wells and doesn't debase the 7 series at all in terms of exclusivity over here...

...and it's of course a six; a straight-six actually, in the very best BMW tradition!

FYI, the BMW 7 series "flagship" had an I-6(not V6) years before it or any other BMW ever had a V8...in fact, the BMW I-6 is the best engine ever made and BMW should have never went to a V8 and/or V10 in any of its cars IMHO ...of the three M5s I have owned, an e34, e39 and e60, the e34 with it's glorious I-6 was far superior and much more "exotic" than the later V8 and V10 versions...

BMW's straight sixes are absolutely supreme...but, let's be fair - and historically correct - BMW did produce a V8 already in the 1950s, which was used in some rather iconic creations such as the 503 and 507...

    Cheers,
    Gabriel

I don't think cylinder count is the status symbol it was back in the '50s and '60s, when that was the only way to make power.

Porsche's latest 997 Turbo actually outguns the Ferrari 599 (even with the GTO package, IIRC). Six cylinders apparently is enough.

I saw a few W220 S320s here in the US (2000-06 MY). Not sure if MB dealers ever sold them and they may have been imported. Doesn't make it any less of an S-class. Same for the 7er.

    With that said, I want a 760. :) V12 or walk. ;)

Edit: I recall seeing an E38 728i at the BMW dealer in Orlando about 10 years ago getting serviced. It was pretty odd...very unexpected.

The 6 cylinder optoins in both the MB and BMW products have been offered in europe for YEARS!!!!!!!

Like someone state previously towards the end of the w220 which I believe was 05 and 06 you could get a S350.

The 6 cylinder has plenty of power to move the sedan and performs the job well in the new 740i. It would be a mistake to write the car off for cylinder count. It will be a very good selling car for BMW and a nice alternative to a 550 for many.

For those of you who say the V12 is always better... either have powerball money or have never owned a V12 sedan. LOL but yes I do get the snickering that 12s are always better when we are in fantasy land

Love BMW's six's but I must disagree with Parkerfe that they are the "best inline 6 ever made" as another inline 6 comes to mind. If the new offering of a TT-V6 is considered to be subpar in performance a simple MBC/FC pairing would easily put those claims to shame. I love the 7 series and always have but why is the six cylinder option a V6 and not the TT I6??

ahh let me guess... the 2jz... the cars that make fast passes when everything goes absolutely perfectly well. Yes it is a good 6 cylinder engine... but I would argue that BMW does it better... anyways... lets not go off of topic based on opinion. It is a fact that BMW has been producing some of the best 6 cylinder engines since the late 60s.

and it is an inline 6 Twin turbo... not a v6 as previously stated. it will be a cold day in hell when bmw uses a v6 instead of an inline 6.

The last year of the w220 in the US had a v6 option, it was called the s350.
