I just finished adding some Alpina badging to my 4.8is. I like it think it makes it look even my different. Not that you see too many anyway. Beautiful. That red on the X5 looks great. Is that a regular factory colour? Whats the code name for it? Vasco
I like that red also. I watched one of these 4.8 X-5s go around the track at the BMW M School. It was unbelievable how it handled. It has almost the same 4.8 as my Z8 Alpina Roadster. A lot of engine for an SUV. Really a fun vehicle and very good looking.
Looks great. The 4.8 is an awesome machine and I especially dig the pic with the rear of the 355 included. Perfect combination of vehicles in the stable...
Beautiful!!! Imola red looks great on the X-5, and I'm not usually a big fan of red on vehicles. (Ferarri's being the exception, of course ) I'm a big fan of the X-5..have the 4.4 myself..they didn't have the 4.6 out yet back in 2001...Three years later I've got 90K "vigorous" miles on it and it still drives like new. Took a brand new Mustang GT the other day on a straightaway, much to the dismay of the other driver. If you've driven the 4.4, how's the difference between that and the 4.8? I didn't notice a whole lot when I drove a 4.6. I'm curious to know as I'll be looking to replace mine in the next year or so. Congrats!
Looking at ordering a 4.8is and that Imola red is awesome but am undecided if I would go with that or the Rally blue, Those two colors are exclusive to the 4.8is. Do you drive it in the Winter? I know you would need to slap on some dedicated snow tires but was wondering how it does in the snow. Also how is the ride with those 20' low profile performance tires? Thanks in advance Scott
havent used in the snow yet, i will but the roads around me are pretty good and they clear the snow away fast, not sure it would be that great but i had an ML55 before and that wasnt too bad, problem is the rear tires on the 4.8 are 315's. i did drive a 4.4 sport and i think its very different car but the 4.4 i drove didnt have the air suspension or x-drive there is a great articial in Bimmer magazine June 2005 4.8is VS 4.6is with Dinan S2 converstion. Its say the X5 4.8is has Velcro-like grip sensational balance and abundance of feed back from all the major controls. In short the X5 4.8is is yttelry brilliant. xDrive has transformed the X5 4.8is into a vehicle of such staggering ability that it now ranks among the most desirable products ever to wear the blue and white propeller.
Read that article and it did make the 4.8 sound like a good choice. Have checked out some X5 Forums and it seems it is best to change to snow tires in winter. Especially after seeing so many warnings in the brochure about how those 20" low profile performance tires are susceptible to damaging wheels and cars suspensions on bad roads and ice. Checked out tire rack and found these for 4.8is,With rims about $2,000 and from what I have read it makes the 4.8is a beast in the snow Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22 (Performance Winter) Size:255/55-18 Load Rating XL HR Speed Rated
it reads very well and on top of that i love the car. As for winter iam not sure iam going to use it. iam looking into buying a used CooperS which i want to track so if i get that i'll just chuck on some winter tires and drive that. As i say the roads here are never really that bad and to be honest if i wake up in the morning and look out and the weather suck iam jumping right back in bed, been working to many years now to worry about taking a day or two off. i can also use my wifes car if i really really need to she has a 2005 Range Rover and that kick's ass in the snow.
Sick Ride 335b! What exactly has Alpina done to the engine? It's my understanding that the 4.8 is already just a couple of technologies short of an M5 motor. Would love to know what kind of performance you're putting down in the X5.
Does the Alpina change those specs? Curious as what's the difference between the Alpina and the standard 4.8is
no the 4.8is is an Alpina built engine they are the spec there is not so called standard 4.8is. but now the 4.8 engine which is the N62 4,796cc is used in the 750i and Li but its not built by Alpina.
I thought the 750 was a V12. I haven't seen the 4.8L V8 in any other BMW products except those which are modified by alpina such as the B10, which it is interesting to note produces 20 more HP than the 4.8is. I don't really know anything else about Alpina - do they build or just modify engines?
