Technology has really advanced regarding blind spot detection. 2016 bmw 7 has technology that not only warns of vehicle in blind spot, but will prevent car from changing lanes. Honda has side view cameras that are activated when you use turn signals. Would love for Ferrari to get on board with this. Would be one of the most functional gadgets given some visibility limitations. The weighr of these features should not be an issue.

What Ferrari could do is start making available simple aspheric mirrors like the rest of car manufacturers in Europe do. Even though aspheric mirrors are not yet approved in the USA (for some strange reason), they are used by most all other ROW car manufacturers. I've used these on all my foreign cars and they work great!!

The mirrors are aspheric - at least here in Europe.

I researched for these for my recently acquired 2011 458. Being unable to locate part numbers for "euro" mirror glass, Left and right (as they're normally listed), I assumed Ferrari did not make them available....but I see I was incorrect!

Can anyone point me in the right direction on how I might be able to locate the part numbers for the left and right aspheric mirror glass, heated and anti-dazzle (self-dimming)?

    Thanks!

The Corvette C7 Convertible has one of the worst blind spots EVER and Chevy doesn't offer it as an option.

    Dumb.

Never mind, I found them! The aspheric mirror glass for our beloved 458s go by the following part numbers (for LHD cars, electrochromic):

    Driver's side (Sx): 82910200
    Passenger's (Dx) : 82910100

If you have the electrochromic option as mine have, they won't be cheap (+/- USD 1,100 for the pair) but you'll eliminate those pesky blind spots!!

    Mission accomplished!! ;-)

I never understood blind spot detectors. Why not just angle your mirrors more outward? You'll see the car until it's next to you. A lot of this technology makes us less aware drivers, imho.

Agreed! Aspheric mirrors are just that! Basically, they're progressive flat mirrors that give you rear view, without the "objects are nearer than they appear" AND, the wide view on their outer edge thereby eliminating the blind spot. Actually very simple and quite efficient. Ask any of our European friends....

The problem is that even with mirrors, there are some areas that make it difficult to see. Its really easy to hit a post when backing into a spot for example.

I always look over my shoulder before making a turn. But, that means you have to take your eyes off the road. Blind spot detectors can eliminate that.

It's technology no different than back up cameras.

Apparently they make aftermarket blind spot systems now. I finally got tired of waiting for my 488 allocation and decided to buy a preowned Huracan while I wait. My Lamborghini has one of these aftermarket systems fitted as per the dealer. The Huracan has really poor rear and rear quarter vision so really looking forward trying out how well this market system works on the Lamborghini. I take delivery mid next week, will give you guys an update.

I find it impossible to anticipate (or for others to anticipate me) moving "quickly" from one lane to another when positioned parralel or close to it to another car. This is the most dangerous situation I run across, and no mirror will help. As far as what is "behind", a curb stop or small obtrusion is always possible, and on the road, I agree with those who say be vigilant rather than dependent on a "gadget". However, when all is said and done, there is no way all cars will not be fitted with these "safety" features sooner or later. Best

I had this on my Jaguar F-Type when I had it and it was priceless.

All it really needs to do is catch something once that you missed and it's worth the price of admission and it will certainly do that.

It makes the mirror just more useful and I never just blindly accepted it without looking and I don't think anyone else does that either so that argument does not make sense to me.

I also like the blinkers on the mirror as well when I'm following a car but that's just me.

I found it priceless and I miss it.

I hate my blind spot on my drivers left mirror. The mirror will not move to the left far enough for me. Unfortunately I had to install a small blind spot mirror inside my mirror housing. It may not look the best but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I wish we had those Aspheric mirrors.

My GF Kia Optima has this technology and it's great. As soon as you engage the signal it let's you know if a car is there or approaching. Reverse is the same.

Our Audis warn if there is a car in the blind spot or if a car is passing on either side. Flashing yellow lights on the inside of the outside mirrors...and if you turn on your turn signal in that direction the light goes nuts...flashes like crazy. But you can still turn the car.

Saw where automakers are working on eliminating outside mirrors completely with cameras and screens like backup cameras. If the roads are wet my backup cameras become useless. So they need to find a placement for the cameras so they stay clean and dry. I assume they will do this.

No mirrors outside will make cars look more sleek and will be more aerodynamic. Less wind noise.

I find this technology to be helpful- just like the rear cameras etc. If they can add it, it would be a welcome addition.

Exactly. These gadgets should be optional on every car. Unfortunately, they will soon be mandatory on every car sold in the USA.
