Shamile? I think you took care of this didn't you?

I will have to tackle this myself on the next major cycle. I hate looking at it too.

Diesel oil and a paint brush & rag works well.

    Dear Ferraristi,

Yes, I have traveled this well worn path many times. :)

I've been removing cosmoline on my 91 TR for the past 5 years. ( first 4 years was just super detailed cleaning )

I've almost got it all....I mean ALL, removed.

I've found the best thing is brake cleaner ( NOT NEAR RUBBER) and my trusty toothbrush. For areas with rubber use 3M wax and tar remover. Use the spray version as the stuff evaporates real real fast.

    Doesn't that eat your paint?

Are you talking about stuff like CRC as shown here:
    http://www.crcind.com.au/catalogue.nsf/(TDS)/TDS5089%20Oct99/$FILE/TDS.pdf

    Any better recommendations?

    Note that CRC says:
"Protect all rubber parts and painted surfaces from overspray."

WD-40 is slower - but seems to work without damage.

    Thanks,
    Vince

On machine tools we used kerosine for years. I don't think it would be a problem on the black paint.

Just a note, when you remove the cosmoline, your car will no longer have a rust protectant on those metal parts so you might want to reconsider or have a replacement protectant applied to prevent rusting of that italian beauty.

Mineral spirits are cheap, pretty effective and not too aggressive on painted surfaces.

I removed all of the cosmoline from my M5 with 3M adhesive remover. Worked great, but the cosmoline was much newer and came off very easily.

    Dear Ferraristi,

Yes, that's the stuff. You can buy it at Walmart. Don't use it near the paintwork. It's fine in the wheel wells, chassis area, under-pan, steering rack well area, frame rails. Use it in small spurts while scrubbing with a tooth brush. Don't use the full spray to remove the cosmoline without scrubbing.

Yes, that's also the stuff. The 3M stuff is great...paint safe as well, but $9.00 a can and it doesn't go far.

    Redtrman,

Yes, this is the rust protector, but it's sprayed so willy-nilly, everywhere else would rust where they didn't spray it. When I removed the cosmoline, I put new undercoating (Eastwood rubberized undercoating ) with a schutz gun and an air compressor. On top of that, I put a couple of coats of Eastwood extreme chassis black....looks great !
