Based on the budget, stay away from the 60's cars, you're pushing the limit to get a nice driver nowadays.

Go with a 365 GT4/2+2 if you can find one. They're the most basic of the 365/400/412 series (read no funky electronics to fail). Best bang for the buck of the series and they sound the best. Your budget will get you a very nicely sorted example with plenty left over.

    Hi, Peter. Welcome to FerrariChat.

I think that any of those models will fit your budget. It really comes down to personal preference. The book "Original Ferrari V12 1965-1973" by Keith Bluemel is a helpful guide, with good pictures of exteriors and interiors of the cars you mentioned.

Also be sure to drive at least one of each example, as they have different characteristics. And then, once you've narrowed down to one particuar model, it's still a good idea to drive as many examples as you can find.

And, before you buy, get a knowledgable mechanic to do a pre-purchase inspection (PPI). A PPI will let you know what impending repairs will be needed, and can also be useful in negotiating a price.

I would hesitate recommending a 365GTC/4 or one of the 365/400/412 series, unless you absoltely love the looks of either body style. They are all more complicated, have more crowded engine compartments, and have sidedraft carbs that restrict access to the camshaft covers. Because you want to work on the car yourself, take a look at these cars and judge for yourself whether you would feel comfortable working in there.

    Good luck with your hunt!

check out the 400. newer than the 330. more power.usually less mileage. looks are similar. most have been coservitively driven. the main problem most come with a automatic gearbox. if this is ok many of these go for about $30k. stick shift cars are out there but hard to find. check on e-bay as a start but if yoiu want a stick you will have to really search the dealers.post on ferrarichat. there may be someone out there who can help you. regards george
