Whats your list of the best tunner cars out there and why?. 1)Corvette's. The main reason why Its number one on my list is simply because its best to start out with a car thats already fast and this car offers that and plus its cheap. The car makes either a decent drag or track car and plus the tunning market is big. Everything from a big block V-8 engine swap for the old stingrays to the MIT or Lingenfeilter modifiactions to the newer models which makes the vettes pretty damn fast for only basic mods. 2)Viper. Pretty much the same reason as the Corvette except that the Viper is a little more expensive depending on what model you go with. It makes great performance regardless of what year the only down side is its not a track car like the Z06 so its more of a dragcar. Just with an aftermarket exhaust on the older Viper RT-10 you could be pushing more than 500hp. Not to mention if you twin turbo a Viper, hardley anything will hang with you except a few bikes. The tunner market for these cars are pretty impressive like Hennssey, Heffner and a few others. 3)Supra. I don't know that much about supras but all I can say is there's plenty of videos around to prove thats a force to be reconed with.
Not in any real order here, just kinda what I think is good for tuner cars. Fox Body Mustang If you are talking about all out drag cars, which is what I enjoy, you can't beat an ol' Fox Body Mustang for the price. I just built one form the ground up as a project drag car and sold it for 6K. Brand new CUSTOM paint job, stock motor with heads, cam, all the goddies and the new owner is running high 11's on it. The tranny was bad when I owned it but he fixed it and it runs extremely well. Also, I have the brackets mounted for the supercharger, but he still hasn't installed it. Should be in 10's easiely with the supercharger. There are few Fox Bodies around here running 8's in the 1/4 with a small block 347. One of my friends is running high boost with his turbo and has ran 7's in his. His car has full interior with 10.5 slicks. Friggin 7's on a small block Mustang motor. Viper I'm biased on this one too because mine is near stock and it's probably in the 11's now. Last time at the track got me a 12.1. My only mods are cone intake filters, exhaust/no cats and a short throw shifter. Now that I had a Dyno pull in my car, I know where to shift at, so I bought a shift light and took a little weight off the car. With my new spring setup and drag radials, it should be high 11's and maybe mid 11's when it cools down a bit. Oh, and my car is not really tuned... I wonder how it's gonna run when I get it tuned? The twin turbo Vipers are running 9's and 8's if they are set up for the drag strip (suspension, etc...). The tuned twin turbo Vipers are putting out 1,000 - 1,300 Horse Power! I think the Viper is more of a straight shooter / drag car. I drag race so thats perfectly good with me. Vettes The new Z06 is fast everybody knows that, and when it's fully stock. Very respetable in all eyes. Alot of the C5's constantly compete with the Viper guys because power is about the same when it comes to a nicely tuned C5. The cool thing is that the Vette guys are doing ths on a smaller motor. You should see the battles between Vipers and Vettes. Great competition. The Z06 is a good drag car but also works well on the turns. Supra Well, "Boost Logic", here in Austin Texas, just made a 7.88 second 1/4 mile pass in their car. 1/8 mile pass was a 5.1 seconds. That is a world record in the Supra world and the Boost Logic guys have been tuning the crap out of their Supra. This is on a 6 cylinder...... dam! Supras are known for being able to handle massive amounts of power on their stock blocks, kinda like Vipers, without having to swap internal parts (pistons, crank, etc...). I think Supras are good for about 600 horsepower on a bone stock block. Go with a larger single turbo with all the periferials, tune it and stomp everything on the street. It's really that simple with the Supras. The only problem is finding one for a cheep price. They are all marked up so much, simply because the potiental and popularity they have. If someone is looking at price and wants to build an insanely fast car for cheep, then the fox Body Mustang is the way to go. If you want to get into a more "Elite" scale and money is no object, then the Viper with twins sitting on it will dominate.
I have been seriously considering a basic C5 to tune up. For those same reasons. Cheap parts, can work on it by yourself. And you can get a decent one for under 19K. Vipers as well, I would get some and just look at it. I love the looks of them and their rawness. A black with silver strips GTS would be great to pick up, plus their mods can be done for a very reasonable price. I have another pick for tuner, a 996 C2, a great tuner track car.
Yes, the 996 is incredible! I think there's a guy around here pushing 900HP on his. Pretty common actually on the 996. My above observations are mainly drag strip oriented. There are a few other cars that are popular for tuning on the streets. Porsche, EVO, WRX, Mercedes AMG, BMW M series. The new Mustangs and GTO's are easy to make fast. Alot of people take a Supra motor and put it in a Lexus SC300. SW, here in Austin had a pretty bad ass 550 Maranello. Not sure what all he did to it, but I heard it was pretty quick and DIDN'T sound anything close to stock, lol. The list can go on and on, but for top of the line more popular "tuner" cars by individuals, not by companies, I think they were mentioned above.
Supra, Vette (like everyone else). Cheap-wise, an RSX is a great way to go. But of course I'm biased.
Heck yea, I forgot about the 03/03 Cobras. Another example of over engineering a motor. Those things take a ton of boost on stock. Very fast cars!
VW Beetle. For 10k or less, including car, you can easily build a bug to run 10's in the quarter mile and possibly even 9's and still be streetable. If drag racing is your thing, the bug has incredible traction and leaps off the line when launching..you may even pull a wheelie. Now if you want sports car/race car driving experience, you buy a superbeetle, you can have both straight line performace and superb handling..which is very impressive- very 911 like. Parts are cheap, working on the car is simple, prices are going up on classic vw's especially restored or modified ones, and if you are looking for one of the rawest driving experience, theirs nothing quite like the sound or feel of a bug with large carburators.
Monster Garage!. Another one is the Pontiac Fiero GT, They weight about 2500lbs and with a V-8 swap you only gain about 45 pounds. Just think if you blot on a Supercharger on an LS1 fited to a Fiero chassis. Who needs an MR2 with turbo?.
Lingenfelter Corvettes and Ruf Porsche. I have had the opportunity to own both. The engineering that goes into these cars is impressive. It is much more than just bolting on a supercharger. The only downside is that you will never get back close to what you paid for the car when it comes time to sell.
buying an older lexus SC300 or SC400 and dumping in a turbo Supra Six cylinder is a cool luxury race car. meanwhile my favorite would be a C5 Vette. Drop in turbo or supercharged forged 346.
Everything gets ownes from time to time. However, we are talking about tuned race cars, not high schoolers driving their 5.0's around the streets "owning" each other. I can sit here and talk about how many vetts I have seen get owned or Porsches. A boosted/tuned 347 smal block Ford will take a Fox Body into the 7's n the 1/4 mile. This is the kind of tuning we are talking about. Whatever you see "owning" this, will probably be by only a tenth or two. To get any faster, you are looking into modified chassis cars that are usually running on alcahol. Any "tuned" car that can have the basic apperance of a street car and run 7 seconds in the 1/4 mile is simply amazing.
The 2JZ-GTE, RB26DETT (and RB25DET, but not so much), and the LSx series. Any car with these engines can be turned into the Saturn V.
SKUNK2's Acura RSX ran the quarter mile at 9.63seconds @ 141.80mph making just over 500whp. Not too bad for a tiny 4-cyliner. Just picking on ya..lol. I'm not one to correct people often but your previous post regarding the Audi R8 just was so far from correct. I'm not even a fan of Acura's either... Believe it or not, you'd be surprised with the Tuner technology today how much power you can squeeze out of a Honda motor. Have a great weekend!
Heffner Performance is where you go for BIG HP and the finest quality, tune and ability to get al that HP to the road. http://www.heffnersperformance.com/
Porsche 930... and the Yellowbird is still one of the fastest cars ever made. Image Unavailable, Please Login
03/04 Cobra Hugh market for parts and with a ported blower and more boost your at 500rwhp! C5/trans/Camaro With a h/c and exhaust there close or over 400rwhp and with a intake and other goodies there dam close to 500rwhp and with spray the skys the limit. Fox body and the SN95 mustang. The SN95 and the Fox body have the 302 which the atermarket is bigger then any other car Id imagine. The notches can be made very light 2800lb race weight in some cases. Im not a big supra fan but any one has to say that the 2JZ is a kickass engine and can make lots of power. The ford GT also with its twin screw blower can make close to 700rwhp on boost alone and Id be willing to bet it could with some race gas. The car was probably stripped and everything no a/c no c/d. Theres full weight trans ams and mustangs with c/d and a/c running simmilar times.
Anything American. Cheap car with already a lot of horse power, a high displacement engine and a huge choice of aftermarket parts ='s the best tuner car. I would have to say right now it would be the C5 Corvette. A C5 Z06 is already 0-60 in the low 4's, 3's if you are a very good driver. Insane, as fast as a 360 for 30k-40k depending on your market. Throw some mods on a C5 or a C5 Z06 and you have one hell of a speed demon . As for the Supra, sure the engines tolerate a lot of boost, but do you know how fast you are going to end up killing your engine with all of the boost? Forget about it. Japanses cars take way too much time and money just to get it to go 0-60 in 4. Corvette>All.
