    Hello everyone,

I am about to take delivery of my first Ferrari and have a question.

I was caught speeding by a mobile unit back in March (doing a rather ill-advised 69 mph in a 40 mph zone). The mobile unit pulled me over and their laser read my speed as above and stopped me and told me and said I would get a letter etc. plus 3 points and £ 100 fine within two weeks. I thought I was doing 50 - easy enough in a Tesla because you can’t “feel” the speed due to the nature of the car (full disclosure - it’s my wife’s) because electric cars accelerate quickly and at times one is not aware of the speed. To cut a long story short the dreaded letter arrived last week dated 18th August but received around 28th and I pleaded guilty online (they had all the evidence and I had nothing to contradict them, even if I did I am uncertain whether the court would look favourably on the matter and it would end up costing me more money and possibly an even harsher judgement).

Yesterday I was shocked to receive the judgement in the mail that I now have 6 points on my license and a fine north of £ 1 k! Having looked online, it seems that the punishment is par for the course. Thus far I have had an unblemished license since 1983! I was once caught by a fixed speed camera a few years back (Tesla again) but the speed was not much over the limit and I was given the option of a speed awareness course which I took and that was that (don’t remember exactly when this was but it was during Covid time and the course was online for a couple of hours - relatively painless). Sorry for the rather long post. The app I use is called Radarbot which works well for fixed speed cameras but not mobile ones.

Since the 296 is blisteringly quick I am worried about an encore because I am now half way to losing my license and it will stay on the record for 4 years - rather an unfortunate time to get the fine plus endorsement but I have only myself to blame.

Does anyone know of an app that also works for mobile cameras?

I looked on Apple App Store and found one that seems to claim that it can help but I am skeptical - RadarAl is what it’s called - anyone used it? If so how effective is it? I don’t want to buy a device that will be illegal or look like an eyesore inside the car unless there is one anyone can recommend that avoids the aforementioned criteria.

These things can happen to anyone and thought to ask the question in case anyone can suggest any solution aside from the obvious one in the heading of this topic.

Hereafter the “need for speed” will have to be confined to track events, where it belongs so as to not make myself a dangerous nuisance to other road users.

    Thank you.

If the offence occured in March and they did not issue the NIP until August, my understanding is that it was invalid as it should have been issued within 14 days of the offence. I am probably wrong, and even if not, the fact that you have pled guilty probably cannot be undone, but it may be worth your while running it past a solicitor.

Incidentally, although the points stay on your licence for 4 years, for you to lose your licence under the totting up rule, you would have to get 6 more points within 3 years. Not much consolation, I know.

I believe Waze does give warnings of mobile (as in temporary) speed camera sites, like the one that caught you, though for obvious reasons it is not 100% reliable, but of course nothing can protect you from a police officer following you and checking your speed on the calibrated speedo in his car, and a Ferrari (especially if it is a red one) is an obvious target.

    Hello,

I understand that if a mobile unit catches you out the police have 6 months to issue the NIP, I looked on “Which” - usually reliable. Did not run it past my solicitor, he’s a friend but more fond of billable hours than he is of me [emoji23]. Hard evidence and all cards were with them so I thought by putting my hand up voluntarily, I may get leniency - especially because it was a clean license. Lesson learned: avoid speeding on public roads, it’s both potentially dangerous and an offence.

As you say, I still have six points left, let’s hope in 4 years time, when I am even older, I will also be wiser [emoji4]

They're out to get us im afraid. Im currently suspended and have my 812 SF and Targa GTS in storage waiting to come back in 44 days.

My crimes? 50 in a 40 twice (both times deserted three lane road) then being filmed by a cyclist at a traffic light touching my phone while the engine was off.

    Be careful out there.

Unfortunately you are spot on, they are out to get us! Here in Wales we not only have the rediculous 20 mph speed limits to contend with but also a zero tolerance policy in a lot of counties.

Ha yes the 20 is a struggle! Especially when you're in a V12 in race mode because of how it sounds!

Maybe we should request Ferrari for an e-bike? The other day in Regent’s Park Outer Circle a guy on a bike zoomed past me and I was doing 20 - embarassing - fortunately I don’t have my Ferrari yet [emoji23]

I love the British people and would love to live in the Cotswolds, but man…….your govt, councils, and govt agencies such as law enforcement make living in the UK sound and look like a nightmare of authoritarianism.

The problem is you only hear the stuff people criticise so we all end up with negative views of other countries or other counties/states. But like all these things, it depends on your existing baseline so is a highly personal choice.

The Cotswolds are a pretty good place to live with choices near some of the major cities and their annual festivals, not bad commute to London or drive to almost anywhere.

Me too [emoji4]. The legal system in The UK is one of the best and when you are on the wrong side of the law, it is unambiguous. Similarly when you are on the right side it’s equitable. As a foreigner growing up and living in London, I can’t think of anywhere else I would feel as comfortable and get the same treatment as everyone else. My only complaint is the dreary weather but for many in this forum, travelling is not a major challenge so we can holiday wherever we prefer the weather [emoji4].

Whilst there is some truth in what you say but the irresponsible use of public funds by successive governments, some would argue, might be one of the reasons that we might be where we find ourselves, as far as law and order goes, still it’s better than many other places, I would argue. Nowhere is perfect, all places come with benefits and costs…

It's fine if you live in the middle of nowhere. We don't have any money for police any more so you won't get caught doing any sort of crime.

Oh and also the road surfaces are so bad you can't speed anyway.

Don't forget the hoards of moronic motorists who insist on driving below the posted speed limits and lack the confidence to overtake even the slowest of other road users!!

I know exactly how you feel. Relatively uncongested roads, clear lines of sight through bends, generally better road surfaces, etc, etc.

You are absolutely right. Health services, social services, roads, trains, … all work brilliantly here in England. Red tape is something of the past and we have 4G mobile almost everywhere in major cities center by now! What is not to like …
