Looking to modernize the 355 and looking for recommendations on two or combination of the headunit and backup camera

    1. What is the best single din head unit with bluetooth and android auto that I can add, and if it has a good backup camera integration
    2. For backup camera my alternative option was rearview mirror camera attachment like wolfbox and wondering if someone has experience with those

I thought about adding period correct lookalike headunit but really want modern navi and more importantly backup camera so your suggestions would be much appreciated

Why would you ruin the car? You cannot change the mirror. Do not put some gawd awful mirror on the wind screen. Learn to back up without one. Never came with them new. Car is short and small. Easy to give oneself plenty of cushion.
Search on here. Lots of discussions on radio. Anything to new looks funny in the dash. I have a hidden Bluetooth receiver that plays through tap mode on original unit. Some German wizardry. Some guys have adapted a great looking Porsche unit and I think you can change the silk screening if resourceful. Nakamichi makes some great alternatives as well.

You will find plenty of threads on here. But seriously consider not doing much of anything. Probably not what you want to hear :)

Having looked a bit at this, your best bet is probably something like this: https://www.crutchfield.com/S-bG4WniQgJoN/p_130SPH10BT/Pioneer-SPH-10BT.html
for the stereo and one of the numerous backup camera mirrors out there. If you are good with the mirror wiring, you would barely be able to see that it's equipped with either when not in use.

That said, another alternative for the nav/phone stuff are smart wearables - the Ray Ban Meta glasses work well for hands free audio and you can get the nav directions through them, and most smart watches have a nav plugin that shows you the next turn on your wrist. Doesn't solve the backup camera but means you can leave the car stock. If you really want a screen I'd use the above and just have the phone do double duty - it already has to do the android auto work so no reason to add another screen to the car.

Thanks for the reply, to be honest thats what I expected to hear from the purists :). I don't want to spoil the look either. I was not thinking of wearables but that is good idea.
Another option I thought was to place a small heads up display which will connect to the phone, and those units are pretty non descript but even then for Navi a phone holder works just fine. I just wanted to stream bluetooth audio and have bluetooth. I think Becker does a period correct unit but will look for the other options you guys mentioned.
I like the concept of back up camera and have a completely wireless solution like Autovox which is removable since it attaches using suction cup and I can do it around the A pillar to avoid it spoiling the look but even then it requires a cigarette lighter plug in to get power to screen. I just don't want wires visible so might need to tuck those in somehow.

Just figured I would reach out to the community to see if there are some clean options. Thanks for the feedback

Personally, I like the single din flip ups like the Pioneer AVH-3500NEX because it can tuck away, but if you want the screen you have it, AND you have a volume button. That unit is a bit old and I'm not sure if it supports wireless CarPlay / AA, but I'm sure another manufacturer has something. Also anything with a screen can route a backup camera into it. For that, I'd run a less permanent camera that mounts to the license plate bolts.

Agreed, the new generic stuff does look different and I am not sure if I will go forward. I have a F430 as well and had a screen added and now I am going to revert back to OEM brackets that ferrari had done for its archaic navi but still add smaller screen. For the f355 currently the car has headunit delete so I have to add back the headunit (OEM) or different one.

As far as backup camera goes, it is more of preference now. I have it on all my cars and I just like the safety of having it. Sometimes I back into the garage and I have two four post lifts so the space is tight and I have a foot of wiggle room on either side so reverse camera with camera lines helps me line it up to the reflective tape on the garage floor. Again it is more of a creature comfort I would like.

On the topic of changes, I know it is considered blasphemy but I also plan to change rear light to LED, fog lights to LED and put in better headlamp bulbs. Been seeing what people have done with scudding swiss and morimoto products.

Just a an idea… what if you put a camera (or two) in your garage that you could view on your phone to help you back up? I use Arlo cameras to monitor my property and they connect to an app (via cloud) for (near) real time viewing.

Porsche people love them, and I’ve heard owners of other makes use them as well. No technical reasons why it won’t work. Tho you might have to put up with Porsche nerds comments should they see it.

It’s more than that…. it says PORSCHE when you start it up too. Probably a jpg somewhere on the ram/rom which might be changeable if you’re brave.

I was actually led on to this unit by a friend of mine who has a 360. This is a unit that has the largest, single DIN display that is Apple CarPlay and AndroidAuto capable, without having to deal with those units with large screens that slide in and out and block your gauges or switches. It is raved upon by the BMW and S2000 forums, and now by the 360 and 430 people.

    https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/my-power-acoustik-radio-journey.694830/

I've always liked Apply CarPlay, for its convenience and functionality, as well as the sound quality that beats any Bluetooth connection. CarPlay and Android Auto runs through WiFi, so it has more bandwidth than Bluetooth. So since I drive the 355 so much, why not add CarPlay functionality and convenience? And for 140 bucks, what can you lose?

So I ordered it (available only through Walmart, lol), and took me a leisurely 2 hours to install (could be shorter, but I'm OCD with my work). Used to have an EMPEG unit that uses a hard drive to store music files, so the swap was pretty straightforward. Also has 2 camera inputs, so perhaps I will install a backup camera in the future. Has a USB A and C inputs as well, so you can play your Hi-res audio files on a flashdrive, or charge your phone off it. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

Its output goes through a Precision audio 4 channel amp, with component tweeters, crossover, and low-midrange 6" door speakers, and 3 pcs. 6" JL subs, so I was skeptical about the sound quality. But I was pleasantly surprised... it actually sounded better than my Empeg headunit, and with Apple Carplay, and you can barely see the PowerAcoustik logo.

Looks clean when turned off, very minimalist. The size of the display allows easy use of the CarpPlay UI. And you can even change the boot logo and background to match your Ferrari.

Absolutely happy with it, it is the best $140 I have ever put into the car, and probably the best single DIN AppleCarplay/Android Auto head unit to work with our cars!

My TDF GTS has a big Sony - single din with double din screen. I will add this immediately [emoji41]

I have a Sony CD that goes in a 355 - unbranded- but used by dealers when guys did not want the tape deck. I also have some tape deck cars, but will give this a shot [emoji41]
