You realize, of course, that the Eagle was designed by the same guy who penned the Lotus 38, Len Terry.
(Hand raised, jumping up and down in the back of the classroom) I do!!! I do!!! (Jimmy was/is my only hero; and Colin not far behind. )
Yup, blue T70s looked good in blue. I preferred another shade though. Penske's Sunoco blue liveried cars were always some of the best looking; be it USRRC, CanAm, TransAm, F5000, F1, Indycar, or endurance. Lola, McLaren, Chevrolet, Ferrari, or Porsche. Ferrari 412T1 from 1994. There was just something about the shape of those side air intakes . . . Image Unavailable, Please Login
Love that Shadow... I am going to post some of my favorite Group C era racers because my god--the LMPs of today are so absolutely hideous that it's hard for me to watch WEC. Plus an honorable mention for this guy...not because it is pretty, but because...********.....speed record at Le Mans that will never be beat. 407 km/h (252 mph) on the Mulsanne straight. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
iirc, 1988. As I also recollect, the story goes...Peugeot knew it wouldn't finish the 24 so they trimmed it, tuned it and geared it solely to do just that....set the Mulsanne trap record. Obviously, they succeeded. edit: Yup, '88 Mulsanne's Corner: Maximum Speeds at Le Mans, 1961-1989
But that wasn't a Peugeot !! It was a WM with a turbo V6 PSA engine, driven by Dorchy. WM was a small French team building their own cars. The record attempt was made in practice, if I remember correctly. The car was trimmed for maximum speed, special bodywork covering the rear wheels, reduced radiator intake and with the turbo boost turned at maximum. The engine was meant to last only a few laps, and without much down force, the driver crawled over the rest of the circuit. But when Dorchy attacked the |Hunaudieres straight he put his foot down and reached speeds above 250, as expected. The engine was soon cooked though ...
If I recall, WM was there every year trying to break 400kph and it took them quite a few years to do it. That was their sole purpose for racing at Le Mans. And Roger Dorchy was always the driver. Once they succeeded, they seemed to disappear. For us English-system fanciers, it was convenient that 400kph and 250mph almost coincided....
Welter-Meunier became Welter Racing. The team still exists, participating in lower sport cars categories, but their moment of glory was to break the 400km/h record at Le Mans
