My check engine light came on again today so I've decided I should finally start checking codes and doing diagnostics myself. OBDII readers I guess are the simplest form and with a bunch of apps available for iphone it looks like I can get a decent enough set up for cheap as chips. $20 for a reader and anything from a free app code reader to a £35 app with pretty graphs and logging tools. I'm guessing that any of these wireless readers will work as they are universal fit although some people have said that because the 360 has 2 ecu's, the readers will only read the right one? Do I need something like a CAN compatable reader? I can't find much info.

I've also read that early 360's were missing a ground wire in the OBD port which was a recall but I'll check that once I've ordered something. While an OBD reader sounds good enough gor what I'm after it won't read any ferrari specific codes which is a shame. I know my garage has a SD2 reader which cost an absolute fortune but surely this is just a OBD reader with a program to decypher the other information. Isn't it just possible to get your hands on the same software and run it from a laptop?

I've had a look on forums and youtube and found info about programs called Leonardo and also TEXA IDC4 which seem to be something totally different again with seemingly amazing functions such as testing certain circuits throughout the car and resetting things also. Does anyone know about any of this stuff?

Could easily spend the weekend reading up about all this stuff only to find I can only read the right ecu or something come sunday afternoon, so thought I ask here first!

    Thanks in advance!!

The diagnostic hardware and software easily cost upwards of $20K used from what i've read. The Leonardo system opens up ablitity to give info on the later cars (F430). SD2 i believe can give you the info on your 360. Thats about all i know which isn't much at this point. you should do a search on here and on Ferrarilfe.com.

From a practical standpoint, you're going to be fine with an obd2 (yes European CAN and CAN2) reader. The subsystems such as ABS, fuel injection, airbag, F1 clutch, etc. will need the Leonardo or SD2 to read any faults that may be present but not accessible via obd2. The Leonardo and SD2 are also in the above systems to actuate them, such as in ABS brake bleeding, etc.

Practically however and from a cost to benefit standpoint, these systems aren't commonly and issue and if needed a shop can scan it if you can't diagnose and repair it. The systems are relatively trouble free in my experience.

Lots of threads here about Leonardo but as you have only just got it I'd be tempted to find someone with an SD2 to check it properly and if necessary resolve with vendor - not sure of any near you but several just over the bridge

Possibly the most common code for new owners is the fuel evap p0445 which can sometimes be cured with something as simple as replacing the fuel cap properly - there are other causes such as a crack in the system which can be found in many other threads here - another frequent code relates to non-standard cats or exhausts
