Anyone got a recommendation for a good battery for a 1995 456GT? Mine has finally given up the ghost. I've been searching the forum and mostly finding older posts, which seem out of date when I try to find the batteries recommended there now.
Looking at an old Fiamm chart, the 456 GT uses the same battery as the Maranellos, so an Interstate MTZ-34R *AGM) should work fine. Just ordered one for my 575M. Expensive, but a 4 year replacement warranty.
Confirmed MTZ-34R in my x-ref list. Essentially, any 34R battery will do the trick. AGMs are generally the preferred choice these days, however. I went with the NAPA BAT 9834R a couple of years ago - as made by East Penn...
Another good AGM source (for your other vehicles) are the AC Delco batteries, as found at Summit Racing and others. Low cost and free shipping to your door. And no core charge! I have successfully installed these in my Cobra and Pantera. Unfortunately, they only make a group 34. No 34R....
H6 If i recall correctly. Costco wont sell it to you without year make and model which will not pull up in their computer. You can look on the labels for group number. I always tell them it is for the space shuttle....
guys. So no issues with the Interstate MTZ? I need a new battery and was reading the old threads about AGM batteries POTENTIALLY not being good for these cars. That was never actually an issue with the 456/550? thanks
I have been using them about 9 years, currently with the MTZ34R. Work great and mine has not been on a charger (except while in for service) in that time. You do need longer J bolts since the battery is a little tall. Mine seem to last about 7 years, and so did my old MTP90 that was not AGM.
I use a MTX48-H6 in my 575 and a MTZ-34R in my 456. Both are AGM. I also favor / support AGM use. Note in my 575 I also upgraded the OEM battery heat shield to the next generation PN 250100 version (needed minor trimming but it’s much more robust than the original heat shield. Recall the 575 moved away from a solid metal shield for the battery ala 550/456. That first generation flexible shield material was complete garbage hence why it’s mostly in tatters (if present at all). Eventually, I plan to do similar for the 456M (while trying to also keep the original metal heat shield used in that car; my 456m needs all the heat management it can get). This is the battery technical info I have: MTP-91 Amps: 875 Cranking Amps: 875 Cold Cranking Amps: 700 Voltage: 12 Termination: A Pro-rata Warranty: 85 Weight: 36.9 Width: 6.88 Length: 11.38 Height: 6.88 MTP-H6 Amps: 800 Cranking Amps: 800 Cold Cranking Amps: 640 Voltage: 12 Termination: A Pro-rata Warranty: 85 Weight: 40.8 Width: 6.89 Length: 10.94 Height: 7.48 MT7-34R Cranking Amps: 1000 Cold Cranking Amps: 800 115 minutes RC Width: 6.75 Length: 10.82 Height: 7.75 MTX48-H6 (AGM) Cranking Amps: 950 Cold Cranking Amps: 760 120 minutes RC Width: 6.94 Length: 11.0 Height: 7.50
Say what you want about Autozone, this battery was in the car when i acquired it about 2 years ago, and have had zero problems, great fitment too Image Unavailable, Please Login
Odds are your Duralast was made by Clarios Johnson Controls. They make a huge portion of the lead-acid and AGM batteries sold by companies like Autozone. Their top end batteries are as good as any, regardless of the sticker on them.
Hey I’m all about taking recommendation and I have an AutoZone right near me. But when I look up this battery on their website, it says ‘does not fit your vehicle’. And then, when you type in your vehicle, it gives a different Duralast battery. 27F-EFB. Obviously, if that battery is already in your car, then it does fit. Does it look like it was modified to squeeze in? Does anyone have any opinions about this different Duralast battery? 27F-EFB https://www.autozone.com/batteries-starting-and-charging/battery Taz- I hear what you said about Duralast batteries and I’m totally inclined to just get the one that came up on the website. Any opinion is much appreciated. Thanks in advance
Definitely wasnt modified in any way. I had it out once to repair my monovalve (heater valve). Other than needing to move the coolant tank it came out without any issues. Per my cooling harness design, there is room to route the upper harness over the top and behind the battery. As far as i can tell its a great fit. Next time the car is down, ill get some pictures for the thread
34s, 36s, and 48s from various manufacturers fit the 456s and Maranellos. Never heard of a 27 size being fitted so far. Mine (575M) has a 34R from Interstate. Here is an original size chart from FIAMM, maker of the OEM batteries, that shows the same size battery in the 456 GT/M and Maranellos. Also attached is the size of the FIAMM recommended L3 80+. man crazy times here... NO ONE has the interstate batteries (although I can get on amazon oddly enough...) I bailed on the Duralast 27F-EFB - absolutely would not fit in the car; I measured yesterday and there is no way I could've squeezed it in. I still may do the Duralast 36. Between the Interstate MTZ-34R ($400) and MTX 48H6 ($250) there is a pretty big diff in the $$. Anyone have any input on the H6? thanks
Sorry to keep beating a dead horse, but does anyone have an opinion on the diehard H6 AGM? Having trouble finding the interstate MTZ 34R. And advanced auto parts is right down the street with the diehard H 6.
It’s worked great in my 575. Holds charge and starts up every time. Not sure what info you’re looking for exactly information wise. Realize most ‘brand’ batteries in the US are made by the same company
You know what man you’re totally right. It’s just this is my first Ferrari and I’m really trying to be as fastidiously perfect as possible. At the end of the day you could drive yourself crazy with the back-and-forth second-guessing! For goodness sakes, it’s a battery! That being said I’m not sure I would put a lithium in an old Ferrari. But the diehard H6 AGM fits size wise and spec wise so I think I’m just gonna pull the trigger and do it. And thank you as always
