What is the best aftermarket (pioneer, jvc, alpine, etc.) cd unit is the best to replace the original cassette player in a 1986 328 GTS?

This isn't my personal deck, but the one I installed in my car. (Alpine 7380). It's fairly correct for the period - I actually had exactly this deck installed in my highschool car, back around 1989.

It's ok in terms of sound quality, considering the poor speakers and open roof. I rarely actually listen to it, but I like that it's there. And people love the old-school look of it.

My 89 GTS had an Alpine single CD player installed when new. I still have it but took it out and put in newer Alpine CD player, because those early CD players from the late 80's would practically skip if you ran over a dime in the road ;),

I would avoid a CD player. Look at a cassette player and the possibility to install a Bluetooth adapter so you can connect your cell phone.

Alpine is a nice vintage brand

I have a period Alpine radio cassette player. For the past couple of years I have been using a product called Mixxtape (easy to google) which looks like a cassette but has an internal memory (for your mp3s) and bluetooth so can stream spotify from your phone. Just turn on and insert into the tape player. Highly recommended!

I looked at the Continental quite a few times on line. It has the right look and the price isn't bad. But the orange lighting doesn't go with the 308's green lighting. I went with the retro Blaupunkt with bluetooth even though it was unreasonably expensive for what it is.

Matches the Mercedes of the era, but Becker isn't that difficult to acquire, yet.

I almost did the exact same thing, I had an older Alpine front loader CD player from the late 90's which could only play CD's, I found a newer model with a similar look but more basic and looks better on the older cars, it can play CD's and MP3 and a USB port, the sound quality's the same like the older one but I replaced the old 6.5" speakers with new Pioneers and they sound unbelievable, it's so good some of my friends thinks I installed an Amp with extra speakers ! the bass/mid and treble are spot on.

I'm so glad I did this, I have proper sounds in the car now and the speakers are still hidden in the side panels behind the material...

I put a Blaupunkt in mine that looks like it's from the 80s, but has all new internals (bluetooth, USB, etc.). I can post more info if interested, though I'm not sure they still make it.

Yes, it is the Bremen SQR 46. Seems they’ve gotten pretty hard to find. There was a Porsche parts supplier in FL that had them about a year ago.

I have one in my 86 328 GTB, it’s great with 6” Focal speakers. Looks 1980s in design.
    Many for sale in UK.
TBH I’d rather listen to the engine and exhaust.

No shame in a good sound system.

I have a setup in my 308 that looks like 1984 but sounds like 2022. I couldn't live without it.

Over the weekend I drove ours about 600 miles with a stock exhaust. At 75 you can't hear the radio.

Agree with that. I've driven my 89 328 across the US three times and needed earplugs or sound-canceling headphones to deal with the noise of the stock exhaust! 12-14 hours in the car per day is too much for my ears to handle! OTOH, I do like having a radio for casual driving, currently have a period Blaupunkt am/fm/cassette but am thinking about buying a new retro model that looks period-correct but has the current bells/whistles.
