This extractor is of those universal chuck types which bite into the threads. I assume, they even damage the threads even more, than the roller type.
I think, those are o.k. for removal of studs, which will be discarded and replaced, but not for studs you want to reuse. Like those we have to remove during the cambelt job.

That’s for broken studs or bolts. I suppose you could use it but it’s sacrificial, you’re not re-using the removed stud.

I am of the double-nut school since I don't need to remove studs very often (ahem, … every 5 years).

When I rummage through my bin of used nuts I can find enough to double nut every stud. That lets me leave the nuts on the studs until its time to replace them so its pretty simple.

I suppose if I were trying to remove corroded/stripped studs I would need fancier military grade hardware.

For stubborn studs with that I fear might break off I use three nuts and two wrenches 180 degrees apart. This eliminates the bending stress on the stud leaving only shear stress due to torque.

What to do with a newly acquired '87 328 that had a HUGE service 3,000 miles ago? Oh yeah, that service was in 2008.

I owned a Ferrari for over 14 years before I figured out you need to replace timing belts. Do the job when you have the time and or money......

Ben, did you just bought a 328 and you still have your GT-4?

Hi Mike. Yeah, the acquisition is the result of a friend's husband's sudden passing. He bought the car in '87-'88 with only a few thousand miles on it and kept it ever since. His stable included a '76 Aston (owned since new), 400i 5-speed (gorgeous), 996 Turbo, '56 Chevy truck, '40 Lincoln, all of which he had slowly sold off over the last few years. The 328 was the one he kept till the end. The service records I have are scant, but considering the low milage, perhaps that's all there really are. The service in '08 was done by Ferrari of Seattle and included spark plug insulators, thermostat, belts, injectors, etc., etc., totaling over $17k. The last record I have for it is from last November for overall inspection and A/C rebuild... done by All Car Specialists in San Gabriel.

I still have the GT4 which just recently started making what I can only describe as a rattling/grinding noise in the engine compartment. You can hear it in the embedded video. Super irritating since it was in for service in May of last year and has only been driven 700 miles since.

So... clearly the GT4 needs attention, but do I need to stress over servicing the 328 now? Actually, I think I just answered my own question: the San Gabriel invoice states "checking" fluids but doesn't say anything about replacing them; an oil change couldn't hurt.

Let us know what that noise is when you find out. I've never heard anything like that before!

Hi Ben! First of all Congrats on the 328. Question, does the 328 starts now? Anyway weather it does or not, the first thing you should do is change the timing belts and bearings just to have a Worry free and a peace of mind.

The noise on the GT-4 sounds like something is rubbing against the timing belt housing. See if there’s a way you can remove the timing belt cover then start the car and see if you hear the same noise or take it back to the shop who last service the car.

    THAT wasn't comforting at all.
The 328 starts, idles, drives gorgeously. Thanks for the suggestion on the GT4 and I'll see you on the 16th.

Don't know yet. Certainly not GT4 if I can't diagnose the mystery sound.
