I believe so ..that was what happened to me

It never made to float mode

If battery is older than 5 years or been discharged a few times ..may be time for a new battery

So the volt meter on the 458 reads around 12.2 before I take it off the temder and start her. Then I drive her for about 40 min, turn the car off, wait like 10minutes, and it still reads 12.2. Is the battery ok or should it read higher than 12.2 after I go for a drive? Seems like the problem is following the battery.

I don't know which type of battery you have

But an AGM battery should have a resting voltage of above 12.4

Agree with above, try replacing the battery tender with a CTEK 7002. You'll need to get the correct connector, unless you are good at making cables. I bought mine off ebay, something like https://www.ebay.com/itm/183641012432?hash=item2ac1db78d0:g:zkEAAOSwLRdgjUYs. This will give you a much better idea of the actual state of the battery:

    STEP 1 DESULPHATION
Detects sulphated batteries. Pulsing current and voltage, removes sulphate from the lead plates of the battery restoring the battery capacity.
    STEP 2 SOFT START
Tests if the battery can accept charge. This step prevents that charging proceeds with a defect battery.
    STEP 3 BULK
Charging with maximum current until approximately 80% battery capacity.
    STEP 4 ABSORPTION
Charging with declining current to maximize up to 100% battery capacity.
    STEP 5 ANALYSE
Tests if the battery can hold charge. Batteries that can not hold charge may need to be replaced.
    STEP 6 RECOND
Choose the Recond program to add the Recond step to the charging process. During the Recond step voltage increases to create controlled gassing in the battery. Gasing mixes the battery acid and gives back energy to the battery.
    STEP 7 FLOAT
Maintaining the battery voltage at maximum level by providing a constant voltage charge.
    STEP 8 PULSE
Maintaining the battery at 95–100% capacity. The charger monitors the battery voltage and gives a pulse when necessary to keep the battery fully charged

Thanks Rob. One question, will the 7002 cable fit through the passenger door like the stock tender?

Yep. The Ferrari OEM tender is a version of the CTEK 4.3, just without all the lights to tell you what is going on. CTEK uses the "comfort connect" cables" that easily fit together. I added an 8 foot extender to the 458 adapter I got off eBay for extra cable range. The CTEK also comes with eyelet, clamp, and cigarette lighter connectors. I pretty much keep all my cars on separate CTEK 7002s, but use the different connectors depending on model. You can just plug the different cables together. If you use the extension cable and ever break it in the door you can just replace it for around $11.

https://www.amazon.com/CTEK-56-353-12-Volt-Battery-Charger/dp/B000FRLO9Y for the tender and you can see the link for the extension cable. There used to be someone on the forums who made the adapter cable, but that was quite a few years ago.

You might still have a battery problem, but the 7002 does a much better job and the lights will tell what step your battery is in.

    Thank you.
I was playing around with it just now. I think the issue is the alarm system. It takes a lot of juice and "when the battery starts to age a little", the stock tender can not charge enough to outpower the alarm draining it.

I hit the unlock button on my key fob (disables the alarm), then unplugged the stock tender power cable from the wall, wait 10 seconds, then plug the power cable back into the wall outlet and now the tender half full battery light is green again, which I think means it is charging again.

You'll probably end up doing both. I'd try the 7002 first to see if your situation changes. The fact that your car is running without problems means the battery might be ok and the tender just isn't great. I used the OEM tender with my 458 originally and would get random error codes at start, even with a new battery. I switched to the 7002 and stopped getting the random codes on start. Even if you get a new battery you'll feel better about it with the better tender. I use one on a couple BMWs, a Maserati, a Mercedes, and a JCW Mini and it has allowed me to know in advance when a battery is dying. Stage 5 where it tests if the battery can hold a charge gives you a great indication that the battery needs replacing.

If you are uncertain about the story on the battery, replace it with an Odyssey asap (like $250), it will save you a lot of headache in the long run. You can also go high end with a braille or antigravity lithium.

AGM batteries charge at a higher voltage than a lead acid and the older ferrari chargers were not designed for this. I agree with many of the points made above. I bought a Noco Genius and like it a lot - I made a new connector for it and it works great.

The tender pictured actually looks like the earlier CTek 800 which is really weak and not good enough to keep up with the electric draw of the car. Your battery could be OK. See what happens with the 7002.

So your Ferrari branded CTEK does not use the same connector to the adaptor? My Ferrari branded CTEK uses the same connector as all of my other CTEKs, but mine was an over the counter replacement and not the one that came with the car.

So the ferrari tender's connector is hard wired to the stock tender. I can not just dettach the connector from the stock tender. I could sodder up something but did not want to mess around.

I am with you. I would not cut the original wire. I guess mine is different because it was a parts counter replacement. If you still have the floor board out, you could use the clips on the 7002 directly to the battery until the adaptor comes.
