I bought a private party car from out of state and there was no sales tax... if I buy a used car in the state is there sales tax from both a dealer and private party? Is there sales tax from a dealer out of state on a used car?

    Thanks.

Dealer sales are taxed, private party sales are not.

Less certain on this one, but I believe AZ state sales tax is collected by the MVD when you register the vehicle. Your resident city then catches-up with you and asks for a check too. Again, not 100% certain.

So it's quite a bit cheaper to buy a 430 from a private party... Can get an equal car a year newer all things being equal if its about 10-12k/yr increase...

dont forget that a portion of sales tax is tax deductible.

also, if you guys want to keep it this way you need to jump on the band wagon of shooting down the AADA's proposed sales tax on used car bill. The AADA is aggresively pursuing that sales tax be charged on all USED cars regardless of private party or not. ITS Ridiculous! This will benefit dealers. I am a dealer and I do NOT want this to pass! People often buy private party because they get a better value. When the economy is down, I don't think we should remove this option for people. Its just going to hurt sales and hurt sales prices for private sellers! (I am primarily reffering to the lower end car market... say sub 20k.)
