I'm considering putting an awning on my 20' Featherlite enclosed race car trailer for shade for the race car and "crew" in the pit. Easy opening and folding to the trailer is a most. So is strength as wind often picks up in the afternoon at SoCal desert race tracks. Is installation a DYI job, or is this better left for the pro? Any suggestions or thoughts on brands, mechanisms, etc?

I did this to my 22' Hallmark. I did it alone but that is because I am a stubborn old mule. Its better installed with a friend.

I went with a unit from Alexanders Trailers in Bloomington Illinois (Julius/big car guy). It was priced right, and superb quality.

I have used it now for 4-5 years, and the rig sits outside all year. It has been problem free.

Thanks for the pointer! Sufficiently sturdy to handle some wind? Do you have a pic with it open?
    Thanks again,

I looked in my archives and don't see any photos at all... sorry. But I will tell you that the awning legs are attached & swung towards the trailer (and are really sturdy). I have had wind, heavy rain and errand bicycles try to take 'em out without success.

Those Willow winds can come up fast, nothing like coming in from the track and seeing the awning wrapped over the roof. Those days we normally folded them back in, takes just a second.

Funny I just came accross a note I wrote myself last fall and I had looked at product called Carefree awning, of course I would have the local RV shop install it.

What about the door (I have 22' haulmark with large door right up front)? I mean is the awning support going to get in the way or do you buy an awning that goes just from the door back?

I've seen some where they have installed the awning in a box above the trailer, more clearace for the side door and tall people.
Honestly, I have had as much done inside of my trailers to allow the cars to be maintained whilst inside, cool in summer, cosy in winter. Storage should always be off the floor or under the floor IMO. Rule 1, everything accessible by moving only one other thing or less for me. I typically have the trailer loaded waiting on the cars return after the race, generally on the road within an hour or less of the chequered.
