I am thinking of picking up a 2003 Audi RS6 as my daily driver. It goes against one of my personal rules of buying something very cheap and efficient as a daily driver. However, it's a very cool car and we have a great mix of independent techs here in Colorado.

I would buy a car that's completely serviced and gone through but I have no misconception that it will be like a Toyota in terms of maintenance. That said, am I making a horrible decision by buying one as a dd?

I don't have any valuable advice for you....but I think they are really cool cars and would love to have one myself. I look forward to hearing what your experience is like.

It's time to pull a George Constanza and do the exact opposite of what you've always done.;)

What are your concerns about it being driven daily?

Be warned...you MUST do a PPI before jumping in. It will potentially save you thousands...which given the cost of entry is very important.

Meh, I think I'm out. I talked to a few mechanics and I think that it's just going to cost me too much in maintenance.

Back to looking for a used BMW or Volvo, I think.

Great car. Suspension issues make Ferrari bills whimper and run.

C63, CLK 63 Cab, or E63 turbo are great cars. 6.3 M156 motors have a head bolt issue, and a valve guide issue that is infrequent, but costly. Worth buying an extended warranty. I bought a CLK 63 cab, added a 3yr Fidelity platinum warranty, and have less than 40k in a car whose total production was 241 cars. With tune, I have 540hp. It has 25k miles on it now, MSRP was 106k in '08. I couldn't get a Mustang cv for that, or a used Shelby. For that matter, can't get an M3 cab, or any other fun 4 seat cv for anywhere near that.

My DD is a 14 E63S wagon with the M157 TT 5.5L. Obviates need for supercar for the most part, and I can scare 4 friends and the dogs. Couldn't get rear facing seats in latest wagons, so no smashing noses on the rear glass. Damn.

Sorry the 550 deal didn't work out. Still thinking. Bought a McLaren 650 this week, so my short attention span is diverted. :)

Where are you in Colorado? My mechanic is also shopping an RS6 but it's more for collecting and a toy he enjoys working on. Being the only year they are getting scarce until eligible for import with the 25 year rule. The Avant is every mans dream wagon, if you like Audis, right?

Perhaps a good call on RS6 punt. Our experience with Audi maintenance has not been great when beyond 60k miles. My SO and I both like wagons, but have been soured with Euro car ownership (except Porsche and Ferrari) lately. She ended up getting a used, low-mile Acura wagon, which is just fine with me i.e. inexpensive. I didn't think I'd like it with FWD, but it handles alright with a stiff rear which reduces understeer. Power is just adequate, but has the VTEC engine characteristic I like.

The other non-Euro wagon is the CTS-V, but I don't like the interior. I'm sticking with my Cayenne GTS. I may have mentioned this to you previously, but an 06 Cayenne Turbo S can be a good one if you're willing to go with a sporty SUV.

Didn't you get a Volvo wagon earlier this year?

Thanks, guys. Since I'm not going to splurge and go with the RS6, I'll probably go back to my previous plan of something under $8k. AWD and a stick hopefully.

Lee, no worries on the 550. As I said before, if it worked it worked. It all works out in the end anyway. Excited to hear about the McLaren.

Now that the final details are leaking out about the buyback later this year for VW/Audi, I've been car searching again.

I'm more than likely going to get the allroad. It's so frustrating though knowing all the variants of wagons and engines you can get in Europe. I would love to have a RS6 Avant!

    Good luck on your search!

    Sherpa,

Sorry I'm late to this party, but I'm an original (and still) RS6 owner. I've had and been through all the problems. If you're willing to hear the story on it, I think you might change your mind.

Hands down, this is the best overall car I've ever owned. Yes, it had some design issues. It was a one-year wonder that wasn't, in my opinion, exhaustively tested. Otherwise, the Germans would have figured these things out and fixed them.

As you know, the DRC pressurized suspension is a known issue. It's a recall item with a re-designed system to replace it. Many owners have gone coilover (KW v3 seems to be the best bet). Not outrageously expensive. Torque converters are a weakness, too. I've experienced both. Still love it, but the ride (I've gone up to 20" wheels) can still be rough. Can ecu tune it up pretty easily for another ~100bhp. Some add a TCU tune, although THE resource on tuning doesn't actually recommend it.

Purchase price is low, considering that my car stickered in the low $80's. Any competent indy can handle service, but the DRC requires special tools, which they likely won't have. So, possibly they cannot do everything. Big services are, IIRC, at 37.5K intervals. Expensive, because they do the timing chain and have to put the car into "service position", which means taking the front bumper and crash bar off. But, there's a VERY good resource in the forum on rs6.com. Check it out, if you're at all interested.

Car just looks right. Car sounds great (Sound-enhancing exhaust was an option, but there are other after-market products, too). It delivers the goods in inclement weather and is an extremely competent car. Eats highway miles. Passes others effortlessly. As a daily driver you'll be visiting the gas stations a lot, though.

I've done a number of other upgrades, including the replacement RNS-E Nav system, which fixes the silly OE option. If you want more, ask.

Good luck. It's a fantastic car. Even with the issues.

    CW

While not an rs6 and not cheap.. I just recently bought an Audi rs7 as my daily driver company car .. it is freakin awesome everything is ergonomically perfect and man is it fast with AWD it handles like a sports car or rides like a luxury car .. The sports exhaust makes it sound better then any turbo has a right to right down to the snap crackle and pop on decel....
    Love it

I love this car. Just do it and don't worry about it. You own a stable of Ferraris after all.

Saw a beautiful red one in Littleton a few months ago. By far the cleanest RS6 I've seen in that past 5 years. If I see it again maybe I'll ask if he'd consider letting it go for you.

The most impressive Audi I have ever driven. Car is the S-H-*-T

Almost bought one back in 09 but after doing my research, I was told that it is the priciest most problematic Audi to own next to the Bi-turbo S4 which is also an outstanding machine.
