Year: 2011 Make: Ariel Price: $100,000 Mileage: Under 5000 Color: Green/Gunmetal/Black Private or Dealer Listing: Private Listing Location (State): CA (Sales to CA residents/buyers for CA-registration and use Only) For sale and for your consideration (but not "on" sale, if you get the distinction) is my California-registered 2011 Ariel Atom 3. Apologies for the funky "Lotus" listing, but Ariel isn't a list option. Before we begin, I just want to nip a few things in the bud: (1) I am going to lead with the fact that price is OBO, but the vehicle is difficult to price due to the following bit labeled (2.borrowed) that I am borrowing from someone else who sold their Atom in CA approximately five years ago, and before the car market and what have you all went to grenade in a handbasket. ====== (2.Borrowed) THIS CAR IS CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN CALIFORNIA! A California-registered Ariel Atom is VERY RARE, as it must go through the SB100 exemption process when it's new. You CANNOT bring in a non-California Ariel Atom registered in another state (Texas, Florida, etc) into California and register it. To register an Ariel Atom in California, it MUST go through the SB100 exemption process (which is limited to only a couple hundred vehicles per year) when it's new BEFORE it's EVER registered in any other state. ====== (3) If it is a Montana or Delaware LLC-titled vehicle you are after from BAT (with the associated crackdowns in CA), by all means, please go for it. I respectfully ask that this vehicle be considered for what it is, rather than being compared against what is not. I fully realize that Ariel Atom 4's are out as well, please do feel free to wait up to two years for the vehicle, and go through possibly 14 months of SB100 on top, if you do so wish, or alternatively purchase one of the $140,000 ones out there. ====== The vehicle has under 5,000 miles and it's in excellent condition. The car was spec'd with a gunmetal metallic frame. It has factory front wing, rear wing, tow hooks, etc. The vehicle recently had a fairly thorough service, including the following: -Oil change -Brake system flush -Clutch system flush -Transmission system flush -Spark plugs -Valve adjustment -Throttle pedal adjusted (had a very small dead zone previously due to slack in the pedal) -Install Rizoma mirrors (I have been informed these are what are used on the Ariel Atom 4, and they certain have far better field of vision than the previous mirrors) I also have purchased (but not yet installed) the factory Ariel Atom 3.5 lighting upgrade kit. More modern lighting for hopefully improved drive-at-night capabilities. I am pricing the listing at $100,000, caveat with "Or Best Reasonable Offer." I add reasonable as, again, I will not consider Montana LLC vehicles or 49-states BAT vehicles as reasonable value markers. Only similar year/make/model located within the state of CA only. Title in hand. Noteworthy is that future Ariel Atom 3 models were K24 turbocharged, K20/24 hybrid turbocharged, or, with the Atom 4, back to K20, but still turbocharged. This is the last of the factory-equipped K20 supercharged variants, and the combination just adds so much character. The noise, the response, the weight, the fun. This vehicle is already registered and titled, saving you time, money, expense, as well as anxiety/frustration/effort with dealing with the SB100 process in California. Caveat: Vehicle is for sale within the state of CA/for a CA-based buyer only. It is located in Southern California. Transportation for a NorCal buyer can be arranged at buyer's expense. Not for sale outside of the state of CA. Finally, please do not misunderstand, as I do not need to sell this vehicle. Only reason for listing is candid conversations with people whereby it's been agreed I just have too many project vehicles or vehicles otherwise sitting, but I'm perfectly content with owning, keeping, and occasionally driving this. To be fair, it's actually probably the cheapest car I have to drive and maintain. Thanks for reading. Can't figure out how to edit the thread, but I was kindly reminded of the following fact by someone else: The vehicle is smog-exempt on an ongoing basis due to the SB100, and as a result, only needs to pay yearly registration. No biennial smog checks required. Thank you.
You can't edit the original post but what you did is spot-on. Just reply with new information. Thanks!
Seen a small handful of Atom 2s out there for sale for $50-60k, Indiana and Montana titles. And maybe one Atom 4 out there for $130k, which I believe was Arizona title. List is relatively high but the vehicle as a CA-based AA3 is not simple to value. Understanding this however, I am entertaining reasonable offers. New: Also will entertain trade offers, if something interesting is suggested!
I’m just asking, why do you think a California registration is worth a $50k premium? Anyone can register an Ariel through SB-100, it’s a pretty easy and straight process and even if you didn’t want to do it there are companies they do it for a nominal fee. SB-100 stickers do not run out January 1st anymore, I got one 3 weeks ago.
Happy to answer. First, I am not necessarily asking for this as a firm price. As stated several times throughout, I stated that it is difficult to price and gauge, have listed OBO, and invited both price and trade offers. I’d like to consider it as me putting out the fact that I would not be going any higher, and that offers are free to come in lower. With that preface having been said: Secondly, it is my own personal understanding that a vehicle once registered out of state is not eligible for SB100 re-registration inside of California. So while there is maybe 2 Montana titled Atom 2s for sale that I personally am currently aware of, they should not be able to be (legitimately, I know not to underestimate ingenuity and unique circumstances) re-titled in California. So again, if one is happy with a Montana LLC vehicle and the CA title adds no value, no problem! I just respectfully as previously stated wanted to be compared to other CA Atoms. Last Atom 3 supercharged I know of with CA title sold for 100k, and non-supercharged for 75k, so I put my upper cap at 100k and invite people “hey fee free to have at it with offers!” Just with a respectful caveat that I obviously am not pricing down to a Montana Atom 2 range. Third, while I fully acknowledge brand new vehicles can be SB-100 titles, the only sources I know of with current availability is Foreman, which has Atom 4s in the 130-150k range. Meanwhile the waiting list for an Atom 4 direct from TMI is, last I heard, approx. 1.5 years. If that’s changed awesome, and again I invite well reasoned offers. Beyond that, if none of my reasoning applies I was just saying please do feel free to get a Montana LLC Atom 2 with Ecotec for 50-60k. I know peoples opinions are broad and varied and certainly I’m in no position to tell someone that their desire to acquire anything they want is improper! Heck we all own a Ferraris and that’s definitely contentious for some people, haha.
Not true, any vehicle can be SB-100 if it was not a manufactured car, I just did this SL-R that had a Florida title. Image Unavailable, Please Login Also did my Superformance GT40 that had Texas title Image Unavailable, Please Login Have also done a few Others like Factory Five Cobras and Daytona. SB-100 use to be a lot more difficult, especially if your DMV was not familiar with the process or local CHP inspection office. Luckily here in SoCal they are routine now and not nearly as much as a headache as they were. I did my first one in 2006 I think, talk about nightmare. I was at the DMV the first day of the year at 2am and there were dozens of people in line.
Cool cars for sure, that SL-R reminds me of the Nemesis Tandem I wanted once. I know I looked into a Rossion Q1 before but it was a no-go because it was previously titled in Florida. Not sure if CA DMV is easing up on enforcement of the documentation requirements (i.e.: have all Bills of Sale, receipts, and invoices for all major component parts) or each of those purchases were well documented, but very cool collection nonetheless. My own personal for sale thread of course and as always is not intended to stop people from acquiring an Atom in CA via alternative means, and of course as previously stated, my list reasoning is as such. You all know my absolute ceiling, far worse would be if I listed it at 60k and then raised the price. Buyers with interest are of course welcome to submit offers my way, which is what OBO is all about. Beyond that, I'm sure the evolving nature of SB100 and the intricacies involved is a great discussion thread for the Regional California subform (so as to keep this listing as a listing and not a discussion thread so I don't get in trouble from a moderator for derailing a sale thread, haha), and maybe I'll learn a thing or two from that thread too!
Requesting thread closure, vehicle will either be kept for the long term, or will proceed to sale via consignment. Thank you!
