Never heard of this. Will definitely watch it. Thanks for sharing! However, I cannot find it in Netflix.......
Watched over the weekend, it was very interesting. Particularly funny hearing Frank Dernie and Patrick Head’s comments about Nigel being a whinger and a PITA. It is amazing how Williams was able to win the WDC the year after Frank had his terrible accident.
Saw it was interesting into the private life of Frank Williams, but anything to do with Senna was completley skipped.
Much more of a dive into his personal life and struggles. Lots of time spent on his late wife Virginia. Not so much a profile of Williams F1 as a profile of Frank Williams.
Good film. They do mention senna and frank talks about it. They don't go into a lot of detail about Sena or other drivers that died in a Williams but do mention it and discus it however it is not the focus of the movie. Frank is.
Totally agree.. We just watched it last night and did a lot of fast forwarding. It is a documentary and almost 20-25% of it is voice and image recordings of interviews of his deceased wife. It is also very long on interviews with friends of his wife, and almost 30% fouced on his daughter as a female manager of the Williams team. Only once in a while do they bother showing F1 racing and him and the F1 backdrop of the 1970s me 80s. Another 10% is focused on his crash with the ford sierra in France and the rest is filled with interviews of former drivers and partners. This could have been done much better as a Williams F1 team and about him as their leader. Instead, BBC turned it into a family film, where F1 plays a minor role and more like background "scenery". I am sure someone will really like it, but for me and my family, it was really far too long, personal and boring editing, on what really is an exciting topic...
I watched it. I really enjoyed it, as I didn't know much about Frank Williams, and he is certainly a pillar in the sport. I particularly enjoyed the part about the Mansell/Piquet era, as this is precisely the time I started following F1......
I think some of you guys missed the whole reason for its commission. Its not yet another fly on the wall story about F1. Clearly this was put together by his daughter as a homage to her mothers background involvement in the team and Franks somewhat autistic way of doing things to the detriment of everything else in his life outside of F1. Frank was not at all comfortable in some of those scenes. I had a great chat with Dave Brodie many years ago at his workshop and he alluded to a friendship with Frank, I thought he was just pulling my leg at the time, I never realised how close they really were. I enjoyed it, the son seems to have the same tendencies as his father which is why he was probably sidelined and not at all a happy bunny about not being the one to take over the team. However I would love to be the one in charge of the classic section of Williams rather than the current F1 team.
Just arrived home from a European jaunt. British Airways has it on their in demand. I found it very good,... but as others have said it is more about Ginny and Claire than anything else. Towards the end, their is a shot of Sir Frank in the garage nodding off in his wheelchair only to be woken by the car firing up and exiting the garage. Sad in some ways,... but his smile on waking showed he is exactly where he wants to be. Definitely watch it. I enjoyed it.
I enjoyed the documentary. If you need lots of action it may not be for you. But I learned plenty and found the whole story interesting. Robb
I liked it a lot precisely because it was the story of the family behind the name. It's very sad at times, and also somewhat inspiring. I am a fan of the team, and I want to see them fight for wins again...
I think that part summed up who he is in a way the rest of the movie only alluded to. At least for me. The passion was obvious throughout, but that was raw in a way that can't be staged for film. I liked it, I didn't watch F1 in their hay-day (was only a kid and my parents didn't care about racing. SHAME!) but I respect the history of the team, and think its awesome a privateer has lasted as long as they have. It inspired me to apply for a position on the team anyways
I had forgotten that our old pal Peter Windsor was Frank's passenger when he had the road crash that paralyzed him. If you watch, watch it all the way to the end of the credits. I hope Franks comment comes true.
I read somewhere that it was mostly based on Mrs. Williams book, so that explains why it covers the family angle much more than an F1 team angle.
