    Hi Florida Section folks

Got an email from Schooner International Auto Brokers this morning about a car I'm selling. Quick question for the braintrust here: anyone know / have dealt with them?

They claim to be auto exporters (a side business from their boat business) -- but, naturally, the whole "we'll pay and then export the car" tag line has me suspicious.

    Thanks in advance

Chris I would handle this by getting them to agree to pay for the car before they ship it. In this way you are protected. I would insist on a certified bank check and cash it to be sure it is good. That takes about 3 days to clear so you have your money. but your bank can tell you better than I. I would not want a Foreign bank. They will want a copy, both sides of the title. This is a copy not the real title.

They will want a sales agreement. Read it carefully and makes notes on the document if "they" made a mistake on your agreements. They should initial at these changes on all copies.

You can do a D&B check on them. Also the chamber of commerce can tell you if they have had any complaints.

Chris I have not delt with them but that means nothing.

Good luck and I hope it works out for you.

    Regards,

    Lee

    Great thoughts, Lee. Thanks!

Fortunately, I'm not yet at that stage: I wanted to see if they were an obvious set of scammers before I spent too much time replying.

Provided they're real, though, your advice is sage wisdom!

Yes, you are right in being wary of these guys especially if you are advertising
your car on a portal site or eBay.

This is a common ploy used by scam artists. Without going into too much detail, they
tell you they are exporters with a buyer for your car in Dubai or Japan (where ever) and
all you have to do is pay for the shipping up front and they'll come and get your car and
off it goes to the new owner.

But, there is always some last moment snafu. Either the check hasn't arrived or it's for
the wrong amount, some times way more than the asking price and if you repay them
the balance of the discrepancy they will handle the rest. If any of this seems
familiar, there are red flags all over the place.

Of course, if it was to be shipped overseas, the car must come with a Bill of Sale and you
never give your title to anyone who has not first paid for the car (meaning the check
or transfer has cleared the bank).

Unfortunately, a few people have fallen for this deal and can be read about in the
    forums on Anamera (finecars.cc), thus,

I've sold cars to a couple of exporters. Both deals were contingent on funds in my bank before I parted with the cars. Smooth transactions both times. I suggest you try this method.

Thanks Gator and Barton -- I think your advice is sound. I'm still a few steps away from any deal, so we'll see (and I'll be checking on them a bit more, just to be sure). That said, the cash will definitely be IN my bank (cleared and mine) before the car ships and the title changes hands.

    Thanks again!

    You are welcome zygomatic.

Hopefully, I am wrong and your deal moves forward without drama.

The best shipper in SoFla is Auto Shipment, Inc. which ships out of Port Miami and
Port Everglades to destinations all over the world. If anyone would know about Schooner
International Auto Brokers it would be Bullent at ASI.
