I have completed the preliminary stages of a fiberglass mold for a 8" subwoofer box that would fit behind the footplate.
I'm going to line this mold with foil and build a thicker/stronger box that will fit behind the foot plate a bit easier. This mold is SUPER TIGHT and too tough to get in and out so recreating one inside of this should fit just right.
The next step is to trim the edges and secure an 8" wood baffle with fleese and resin to mount the sub. I have a Alpine KTP-445U 4-channel Power Pack Amplifier that doesn't need an extra power cable run to the battery. It just runs from the deck and can be bridged (with some hot wiring that voids the warranty) to push 90 watts to the sub and 45 watts to each door speaker.
I haven't hooked it up yet so I'm not sure how it will perform but I know some stereo installers and they say this thing packs a pretty good punch.
I'll be using a kenwood 8" shallow mount subwoofer which is only about 2.75" deep. I went to the car stereo shop and demo'd one and it blew me away with how great it sounded. I'm pretty sure that inside the small cabin of the 308 it will sound incredible.
When done, I will have an air tight sub box that fits perfectly behind or in lieu of the foot plate with a layer of dynamat all around.
This mold can be re-used easy enough to make more boxes in the future. You can see that it has a recess for the wiring loom to pass behind it to maximize volume in the box.
Anyone on here interested in one for their car? Assuming mine turnes out good, I could probably make more easily enough for others on here.
I hope to be done before next Thursday (road trip coming up).

Interesting idea to create the box - is it going to be that much better with a small box like that than without it?

I made the usual wooden mounting plate for mine that just goes where the original plate went. I then stuffed some wadding behind it. The Sub I bought (again shallow mount) is an 8" Kicker.

I also have the KPT445 but that just runs the front & rears. Its burried under the centre console. The sub is powerd by a class D Pioneer amp (not very expensive) that lives in the middle of the spare wheel mounted to a board. Class D works well for a Sub because they tend to run much cooler.

I could put the whole thing back to stock in about an hour I think.

I think small subs work better in a sealed box, especially if you are going for a hard punching sound for your bass. Just what my experience has shown me.
How does your sub sound? Are you impressed with the Alpine power pack?

Something like this has long been on my to-do list...
What volume do you think it made?

Interesting about the Sub working better in a box - I'd be interested to hear how much better you think it is if you have a way to do a "before & after" with it.

The power pack is definitly worth the money - especially in the 308/328 because its so much smaller than a normal amp and so easy/non invasive to install.

The one thing I did do though was to upgrade the wiring harness to take the modern single plug format but now that's done it makes the whole thing very easy to work with (and would make it simpler if I ever wanted to upgrade the head unit etc).

The sub has also helped a lot but, lets be honest, at 80mph with the roof off, nothing is going to sound great :)

I placed an 8" woofer in my passenger footwell with 50w am in the trunk. For the first time I can hear the radio/cd above the road/engine noises which the 6" door speakers and stereo 50w amps could not provide, mostly because of position in the car with respect to occupants ears.

Further improving/altering/enhancing the sound through the carpet and 1" thick carpet would interest me but, adding a box, whether sealed or not, and while an admirable thought, IMHO is a futile effort.

I will advise on experience that you use a very sturdy reinforced plate and spring-loading the speaker rather than using it's cage for strength. The power of a frightened passenger pressing their feet on that plate assures a quick warp/bend of the plate and possible warp of the speaker cage.

Note that many 308 cars have substantial electronics located in that space which cannot be relocated which may affect the size of the box. I do look forward to learning the perceived results of the sealed box in the presence of running noises. Never really know until you try.

I'm going to fill it with water when I'm done to measure the volume. I'll be sure to share.

Keep in Touch Tommy. I might be able to whip one up for you easily enough....You still savin' for a 3.5L conversion?

Any reason Alpine why the Alpine amp does not require you to run a heavy power wire directly to the battery? Is this not the norm with most amps?

Spent about seven hours last week removing items like these along with radar detector, mobile phone equipment and a car alarm, about twenty pounds of wiring to run this mess. Want my Euro QV the way it was shipped from the factory. The sound from my rear deck lid puts an Alpine to shame.

I haven't completed the box yet. I have been sidetracked lately.
As far as why the Alpine amp doesn't requre a heavy power cable, I think that it is just a small compact type amp for lightweight applications. I am looking forward to hooking it up and hearing how it performs soomeday soon though.
I finished putting in a layer of Dynamat everywhere and another layer of mass loaded vinyl on top of that. It cut down on a lot of the road/wind noise coming in from the floor board etc but I still have to adjust the driver window to close all the way before I have a final judgement. Besides that, the muffler is so loud that I think I'll always have to strain to hear the stereo.
Is there a such thing as a quiet sport muffler? Is that an oxymoron?

Looks great but you had to cut your center console which I just can't do. I am planning on a flat wood panel with an 8 inch woofer and an amp also in the foot well. See the earlier links I posted. I want it totally invisible and even then I doubt myself. Woofer and am are under $200. I can always reverse it.

I was wondering when you were going to chime in with yours. :D

I have heard Mike's and it does exactly as it is supposed to, even with the floor mat over it like he says. I have wanted one for myself every since I listened to his years ago,

I had it professionally installed... if they cut my center console to get it in there, after all this time I never knew it! :)

I love my subwoofer install - and it's still going strong! Keep in mind that it isn't a door-rattling, window-shattering setup... but, it adds a huge element to the music (and you can feel it through the gas pedal!)

FWIW - here's how I prevent people from trampling the speaker... I built a plexi shield and spaced it off the speaker

Very nice. I just noticed that your sub has a very shallow mount compared to the other shallow mount speakers. The pioneer sw841 has a much larger magnet radius. As a result, I can't fit an amp back there. Now I know how you did it.
