Hi Guys, I am moving house soon and there is only a carport, not a garage. i am looking at buying this drive in carcoon: https://www.carcoon.com.au/browse/drive-in-carport-carcoon/ From what I have read this should keep the car dry and happy during the week until I drive her on the weekend. Does anyone here have any experience with Carcoons? Or in particular this drive in carcoon? I am just wondering that if it's rainy and windy and the carcoon gets wet, it should be water resistant, right? Any advice is most appreciated...
hi, I have the outdoor carcoon, which is the previous model without the frame. Excellent quality. I had a car stored for about 12months through all sorts of weather and it stayed completely dry. Go for it
I have been keeping my car in a carcoon for the past 5 years, they are great. They are easy to assemble and have an inetrnal subframe as well which are like thick tent poles that click together. Mine has 2 fans that push air around the vehicle plus it also has a battery tender as well. However mine is in a garage, so cant speak for outside use, but I would think that it would be fully waterproof mine is, its probably the wind that I would be most concerned with, but if under a carport you should be fine. Mine has been great and has delivered on all promises made on the carcoon site.
Ditto, I use a few of them (without the internal supports) and have had them long enough that I had to replace the inner and outer filters.
I've seen a high end car storage place that's beautiful and clean, yet 5 or 6 of the cars are in those. Guess it make a good thing better.
Does this require a power outlet? I'd think you need one to keep it inflated. I would also think that it would draw more attention than just a car cover. You might want to check with your complex if they would allow it. We all know rats and mice love cars. I recommended this to a friend that has an old dirt floor garage for his Lamborghini 400gt. Anybody experience vermin getting in?
It does require power, not to keep it inflated as it has poles on the inside that create a structure, rather to run the fans within the Carcoon that are designed to reduce humidity. I have had mine for 7 years now and have never had a issue with mice!
Have used the double layer outdoor carcoon for several years on my QV. Keeping the car excellently dry but very fine dusts will still get through the filters and cover your car. I used mine in a 3-side open carport. It can withstand typhoons with speed well over 120km/hr as experienced several times during the period of use. You need the power to keep the airflow going even if you use the framed veloce version or the AU framed carport version, otherwise it's just an unsealed bag that can trap moisture instead of keeping the car dry. You can custom your required size and extra features if you order thru the original UK manufacturer. Did that myself. Not sure about the AU one. BTW, the carport version seems not available from the UK site. And I believe it is a modified version of the veloce type with only the anti-UV outer layer of the original outdoor version instead of a proper 2 layer system. http://www.carcoon.com It's a very good option nevertheless if not the best.
Don't forget outdoor elements are much harsher than an indoor garage environment. You might need to consider if a single layer system is adequate or not, as the carport version seems to be of single layer. But you don't have frequent storms, heavy rainfall and high humidity like we do here. I had my outdoor version custom sized and fitted with straps etc by the manufacturer so I could suspend it from the carport roof with some simple pulley mechanism. Odd fittings but worked really well and made it easy as the framed ones for more frequent use.
In a garage they are fine, a buddy uses one for his E-Type and he really likes it. Not sure I would use it outdoors, just because I'm not sure how secure all of it remains in bad storm. A buddy had a temporary garage something like a Carcoon and in a very bad windstorm it came apart and the poles that gave it its shape whacked his vehicle leaving dents. Hopefully your area doesn't get many storms.
Good point about the internal frames breaking in bad windy weather. I guess it's why this carport version is not offered by the original UK supplier? Actually I've asked the manufacturer about that possibility myself and their answer was a straight no. They had the veloce drive-in version already at the time and they refused the setup for outdoor use.
Hi Steven, thanks for your info, much appreciated. The carport I have is currently open on all 4 sides but I will be modifying it to be closed on 3 sides. The floor is currently paved but I will have this raised by 3 to 5 cms, I will lay rubber mats down and put the carcoon on top of that; all this so I minimise any ground water from touching the carcoon when it rains. The outer layer should be enough to stop any water penetration when wind and rain combine. She should be happy with this set up....
Guys just another question, how much power do these things use? My plan is to put the power on over night and then off during the day in the warmer months. Thanks again
Very minimal power consumption (penny's per day), but power is required 24/7 to keep the carcoon inflated. Check the carcoon web site for faq and models. I have no problems with mine, but mine is in my garage.
I run mine 24/7 as it uses very minimal power. I think the carcoon website will have the exact power consumption figures.
I think it would not hurt. Mine has two carbon filters which are designed to keep out contaminants, so i think it would prevent any salt getting into the unit.
