Grappa has a "buttery" taste that must definitely be acquired. Whenever we drank it, we'd already downed a lot of wine at dinner.

Grappa is the italian single malt. I love it.
To say grappa is a bit buttery or grappa is too fierce all depends what you are drinking.

My favourites are Grappa Brunello di Montalcino or Grappa Ornallaia.

NNO please  down it like a shot???
The freebie at the local italian restaurant perhaps but please try a good grappa ;)

+1, I think Grappa is just awful. I have tried on numerous occasions (after a lot of wine), I figured people were saying it was good so I must be missing something.

Hi Chris, are you generally not a spirit drinker?
I can understand people not liking spirits in general but if you like a nice single malt, cognac or whatever every now and again then I can only think you've been drinking crap grappa. Bad grappa is best used for cleaning the silver cutlery ;)

I am a spirit and wine person. I have sampled many wines and many spirits during my days. I have a particular fondness for cognacs and single malt scotches. Grappa has never one much for me. Like anything else, it is an acquired taste. I simply have never acquired it. :(

No, not spirit drinker. But I drink a lot... beer, wine and champagne. I also drink mixed drinks.

When I first heard of Jaggermeister I had a straight shot...took three days to get that nasty taste out of my mouth, but I think it tastes good mixed with red bull.

I've tried Grappa on 3 or 4 occasions...never again. (When I did try it, it was in some of our better Italian Restuarants).

well, since this thread was revived I´ll post my thoughts. I had it for the first time last night, and I liked it from the start. I did find it hard to just sip at, it is rather strong.

I put my grappa in the freezer & this takes some of the burning sensation away as it's going down. Bottle looks really refreshing as it frosts up after being out for a few minutes.

It's great also if you have idegestion.

I'd like to think I've had good grappa, but I'm certainly open to suggestions of a brand I should try. Something I can ask for in an establishment, of course. I have no desire to buy an entire bottle of the stuff for myself (unless I can put it in my gas tank and make my car go faster). :)

There is nothing better after a real Italian Dinner. Grappa and Espresso and maybe a Havanna.

Grappa can be actually a smooth indulging drink when you aquire the proper one!!

For example one of my Favorite from the Poli family is the Jacopo Poli di Sassicaia Grappa, Awesome drink!!!

There are different "styles" of grappa. One should try a few before passing judgement on grappa. Some have a very distinct grape taste-almost like firewater Port-while others can be buttery. I currently have a more floral variety in my stash. Can't say it is my favorite, but it works.

Wow I never knew Grappa was this well known! I'm used to the home-made gasoline-esque kind. :D My grandfather, uncles, great-uncles, etc. who have made/still make wine make grappa. HOLY **** will it put hair on your chest.

I need to try some good stuff though, thanks for the links everyone.

    Yes

It is known as the Water of Life. As a matter of fact, my parents used to make there own, secretly of course. They would use in the sausage meat give it a nice flavor. Great for cooking, mixed drinks, on the rocks, straight up.

I treat it like tequila, there are a lot of varieties out there some bad, some very nice. As a matter of fact I was in Shaghai 3 weeks ago, and introduced a business friend of mine to Grappa, and he thought it was, shall we say, 'interesting' and 'WoW'
of course he is a Ferrari guy

Grappa is not a wine, nore an aqua vita (not enough alcohol grade).

    And there are many kinds.

Including some perfumed w/ orange or lemon lime.

You can also try the Limoncello, a Napoli speciality, XLNT w/ Vanilla ice.
