I have found someone selling a car and they are saying it is in Batam Island. Just trying to determine what the likely hood a Ferrari would be on one of the small islands.

Where are you located? I've been to Batam before and its not a place where you would see any nice cars, however there has been talks that the island is tax free and you can import a car without paying the hefty import and luxury taxes that you would normally have to pay if importing the car into the main land, I would be very cautious.

    Hey Jon,

I am in Portland Oregon. Someone is advertising a '71 Dino, and saying its on Batam. Trying to determine the best way to figure out if he is legit or not. Thanks for the warning.

71 Dino i highly doubt it, i have also heard some of the cars that end up in Batam are possible stolen cars or confiscated cars.

Batam island, that's Philippines! Its an export trade zone from the old days. Rich WW2 history. Dino being sold out there, I seriously doubt such car exists, perhaps a replica built out of Jeepney parts. I would give it a miss. Even if you buy it, by the time the car is shipped out, there would not be any parts left. Just my 2 cents worth.

Hey Guys, thanks for all the feedback and advice. The more I see and hear the more it is not worth investing anymore time in.

The car I was looking at I was intending to steer toward a friend who was wanting to get a 246 Dino for his wife. He tells me he kicks himself for passing up the opportunity to pick one up for 40k, before they all price jumped to 130k+.

Thanks, you have a link? I'll check it out and see what they have. I am still working on my getting my 1st F-car. Don't know if she would object to a RHD.

    Hi,

Batam IS definitely in Indonesia. I heard that some cars from Singapore are exported to Batam before being smuggled into Indonesia. A Merc or Bimmer is more likely to be smuggled from there. A 71 Dino in Batam is highly suspect although I know one red Dino in South Jakarta. Anyway, you shouldn't be looking in Indonesia because its RHD country.

As for buying Ferraris (or anything else) from Indonesia(ns), its not as bad as some internetters put it. You just have to have someone reliable to guide you. I assure you that most Indonesians are honest, friendly and warm people. Just a few rotten eggs here and there just like anywhere else.

JonTezta was there and I am sure he can attest to that. Right Jon? hehehe

The original posting for the car started in Berkly California, then the same add showed up in Australia. By the time the owner replied to my email he said the car was in Batam. When asked about the traveling car, the owner stated that the car had followed him with his work and he was now back in Batam. Originally it was with in driving distance, but the target kept getting further and further away.

Wow a dino in jkt? I really wonder how they got that in there considering the laws against importing used items into the country. I was told that up until 1999 you could not legally import any cars, all cars bought were locally assembled?

I guess the Dino was imported ages ago. It is a very famous car that can be seen in all classic car shows in Jakarta

not all of them true though..... people who have a "connection" to authorities can also do it too before 1999. I swear that people drives ferrari, porsche or lamborghini in indonesia ( Jakarta) long before that...

I know the law states nothing used can be imported into the country, and yet there are quite a few older cars that as you said are imported through a connection with the customs.
