I was killing an hour this afternoon so I stopped by a (new) Porsche dealership here in town that happens to sell Land Rovers as well. The paint on those things is absolutely HORRIBLE. I mean B-A-D on all the new ones. They have the worst orange peel I have ever seen. Even cars with "bad" paint jobs aren't this bad. I walked around for a few minutes and noticed ALL the new ones were like this. I may drive over there tomorrow and take a picture of one and post it just to show what I mean. Have they always been like this? LR charges way way too much to produce that type of piss-poor quality paint finish.

The fact of the matter is that its a 4wd... i cant stand them for the fact that they're so huge have a poor centre of gravity and so slow.. and if it has bad paint then thats another reason do dislike them.. i mean whenever i see a range rover or land rover, or for that matter a cayenne, i instantly think who in thier right mind would buy one of those and spend that much money on it... many of you would probably disagree and think that a fully pimped out range rover with 21 inch chromies is fully sik... just a personal opinion i have on 4wds...

give me a low slung sports car any day.. and i would be intrested to see those photos of the bad paint quality.. btw who is land rover/range rover owned by these days..? at one point it was BMW?

I didn't buy one for the paint finish. Why would you? If you used it it would get the **** beaten out of it anyway..

Poor center of gravity? So 'slow'? It is an SUV, not a sports car. Different tools for different operations. The Range Rover is a very, very, capable off-roading vehicle and was quite entertaining for the off-road test drive they arranged in Santa Barbara. Superb machines.

A good Land Rover is supposed to have a few knock on it and covered in mud and used accordingly. Not to cruise up and down a clean road. This is true LR owners territory and they have the ability to go anywhere. my old series 2a was stolen recently and the thief smashed through a brick wall demolishing it. When the Landy was recovered there was only a few scrapes on in but the wall was mullered. Like Ferrari once you drive one you are hooked for life.

Omar, how has the reliability been so far? Have you had any warranty items? Great looking rig!

Sure it should be covered in mud, etc. but for 70K+ it should be painted properly too. I am going to try to get a close up shot of one this week to show what I mean and post it with a shot of the left rear of my 308 that my next door neighbor pulled a dent out of and resprayed for a couple hundred bucks. I really don't want to deal with a sales person but I'll figure out a way to do it. My point will be clear then.

Can't tell you about paint quality on the Land Rover- a friend had a 2004, i guess it was, when the marque was still in the hands of the BMW, and it was one of the nicest trucks i ever drove- but if you want to ***** about paint quality, the BMWs are no prize either. My 2004 M3 has tons of speckle/chips on the hood from road detritus; none of my true sports cars, which sit much lower, ever had this amount of road rash.

40k miles now and only one warrenty addressed issue (rear squeak). Aside from that it is has been trouble free. It gets the daily rounds. I love the storage room. Hate the lack of rear adjustable seats, and lack of/lack of an option for AC seats. Drives like a dream.

Our '03 has very nice blue metallic paint on it. No orage peel, really well done.

It was no problem matching it when one of our "student drivers" drove it into the garage with a little too much enthusiasm!!

Runs well, has the lousiest gas mileage I've ever seen, and a huge turning radius, even for an SUV.

Would I buy another one? Nope. Is this one ok? Yes.

Bill, Ford has owned Land Rover since 2000. Maybe your car had some slight damage and had the front repainted at the dealership?

I'm looking at an 06 Range Rove now, I like my Porsche CT, but since the twins came the is not enough room in it. I like the Range Rover and the rear seat entertainment (monitor on back of both headrests) will help keep the boys entertained and me sane.

I detailed an older one last summer, and even though it was old the paint was still bad. I mean badd. Some parts seemed to be missing clear coat all together.

I can't comment on the paint, but the interior is IMHO one of the best in the auto industry.

As for slow, the RR Sport has 390hp, so it should do fairly well for a vehicle of it's size.
