If i grew up during the sixties, and if i had to pic a group to be apart of, i think the hell's angels would be my boys, lol... I was reading a book about 'em written by Sonny Barger, crap did those guys ever live some entertaining lives.. Just curious if anyone here has any stories about em?
Didn't they act as security for a Rolling Stones concert (ah can't remember which one). If I remember right a fight broke out and they jumped in to handle things. When all was said the whole decision to let the Hells Angels was not exactly smiled upon. I do know about the Hells Angels but, that one sticks out the most.
They and all "outlaw" motorcyclists were/are nothing but a bunch of greasy slobs and criminals. Any romantic legends about them are pure bullschit.
Heckling an Evil Kenivel show in the 70's, the crowd turned on them and beat them down (San Francisco Cow Palace.)
funny you bring up one of the only parts i read in the book, i was just skimming through. The way they said it went was the stones took a long ass time to get on stage. While the crowd, the angels, etc. were waiting for the stones, everyone was getting really anxious and thus getting rowdy. Some fans started messing with some of the Angel's Bikes and the Angel's went in and started to regulate. There seemed to be a lot of fighting going on lol, it wasnt just one big fight. The big moment of the concert(it was in san fran, 69 i believe) was when a fan rushed the stage and tried to shoot someone in the band, im not sure exactly who. The Angel's stopped him though and beat him so good( or bad depending on your side) that he later died from, but, he did get 1 round off that hit another angel. Barger, the guy who wrote the book, ended that chapter by saying he thinks the stones are a good band, but thought they were really "girlie men"( to put it lightly) and that the way they treated the fans wasnt cool. The stones said the California version of the Hell's Angel were the real deal(meaning crazy) and that the Brits hells angel group has nothing on the Americans. I dont think the stones ever said they wouldnt want them to be security at another concert, i think the angels said they dont want to be with a band who treats their fans so bad. i have know idea why i felt the need to post that lol...
the "Age of Aquarius" and the "Sixties" are over. The "Summer of Love" was in '67. At Woodstock, the flower bloomed, some nurtured it until Altamont, though, where the flower died. Let it Bleed. All one has to say is the word "Altamont" and one knows you're you're talking about the free concert at Altamont Speedway in December of '69. It's on the flick "Gimme Shelter." Altamont was a bad trip, as the actual venue was decided upon less than a day before the concert started. the Stones had used London Hell's Angels in London who were more like the Stones than US Hell's Angels. How could they know, aye? Since the stage was only a foot high, Hells' Angels working security around the perimeter of the stage figured it was all about them, if you can dig it. Lots of fights that day even before the Stones showed up and a few others died accidently. Mick's long been quoted as saying his biggest fear/fantasy is dying by knife while performing. It is said the most famous dead of the infamous venue had a knife and a gun. So much for memory - we talked about this while playing Poker a few times, as Stones were our background music at least 1/2 the time. (looks it up) The young black man's name was Meredith Hunter. Hell's Angel Alan Passaro got off the Murder rap as the jury decided it was in self-defense. No mention of a knife actually being carried by Mr. Hunter, but the gun story stuck. Hell's Angels had knives, though their weapons of choice throughout that day were pool cues and full beer cans (hence the "got paid in $500 of beer" legend). The Alameda County case was closed only a couple of years ago, as there had been mention made of a second stabber, but no evidence to support it. Yup - check out how low the stage is. The juxtaposition/irony of this photo is amazing - a white band playing playing black music - a black man is about to die at the hands of whites - a peace sign raised by a fan, while another turns away - it's soon to be over. By the point of the pic on the following link, though - it was definitely over. Image Unavailable, Please Login
After reading the first couple of posts in this thread, my knee-jerk reaction was to respond with "Altamont!" but you've painted a far greater picture here (not to mention heavier) than I could have ever read about in any text. Thanks, Chris
ya, im not really interested in that one lol...i think the HAngels had valid arguements when they ***** about those who were saying crap about the soldiers, no reason for that... but, i aint going down this road no longer. yall feel free to turn this thread into whatever you want though, lol.
lets turn this thread around though. i want to hear about bar fights, fast women, and fast motorcycles....
How about my uncle (a former SEAL) grabbing one and nearly snapping his neck in a bar fight about 20 years ago? There's nothing special about this group, it's an organization of drunken bikers. C.
never hung with a hells angel, BUT, i did hang out with a bunch of pegans at a rolling stones concert back in 1982 in philadelphia at the good ol jfk stadium. these guys, at least in my experience were a great bunch of dudes, funny as hell. we drank and smoked all damn day and they treated me as one of their family. now i just recently met the head of the chapter in the northeast here and again, really cool guy !!!!!
I lived in San Francisco until 69 (my teen years). There was a pizza joint on El Camino Real the fam ate at once a week where there was always a line of Hells Angel bikes parked at angle rear to curb out front. I engaged in small talk occasionally w/ members. My favorite complement from an Angel: Youre as cute as a speckled pup. I was flattered.
One of the nicknames for meth is "crank". Meth used to be almost the sole providence of the bike gangs and they sometimes transported it in the crankcases of their Harleys, hence the nickname. It is now the scourge of many, so some of the "glamour" of the biker gangs has gone mainstream, beyond just the trend of middle-aged professionals wearing leathers and being "badass".
While I dont really want to take place in this little Fchat war...But I will say this.... Ahem... Karen, THIS is who you share your given nickname with....still flattered? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
OK.....bar fight coming up for RyanS.....I knew a few of the HA's here and witnessed this fight (if you could call it that) close up...... In the King Edward Hotel in Calgary around August 1995, during one of the notoriously packed (400+) and particularily rowdy Saturday Blues Jam sessions, a seriously drunken patron who had been taunting a group of the guys in their colors for about an hour was "evicted" when the bikers......who couldn't take it anymore after even having moved back to the back of the bar where the pool tables were threw him out. Three of them came marching around the corner of the bar in unison and before buddy with the mouth could realise it, two of them had picked him up by the armpits which dragged him out of his chair and then they held him up to the side door, which was open. The last guy walked right up to him and drilled his jaw with a right hook that hit the guy so hard he flew thru the door and crashed to the sidewalk. Applause all around was the order for the day....and a 9.5 for style was awarded for overall artistic merit and syncronicity. Here's the hotel...which is now closed as of last year. Best bar in the world (for meeting cool people and coyote hunting) and one of the best blues clubs in the world as well....everyone played there. Image Unavailable, Please Login
If you are interested in the biker culture read the true story "Under and Alone" by W. Queen an undercover ATF agent , who infiltrated the Mongols MC club in the late 90's early 00's.
I knew a few of them. They were human trash, and the world would have been a better place had they not existed. Murderers, slobs, thieves, liars, drunks, you name it, they were it. They got their butt ounded at the Cow Palace during an AMA short track event. They were throwing crap on the track, and the racers, their crews, etc., went into the stands and kicked their butts. They never came back to an AMA event, which was and is a good thing. Art
