I'm normally on the Porsche forums, as I can't quite swing the cost of admission to buy a Ferrari, but that doesn't keep me from lusting for one. I'm headed to Italy in June on vacation, on a cruise ship with family, which docks for one day at La Spezia on its itinerary. The wife and kids are headed to Florence for the day but I've been there, done that. I'm thinking I want to grab a rental car and drive to the Ferrari Museum in Marenello / Modena and looking for some feedback from those who have made the trip. Specifically:

    1) Worth spending the day (Probably!)

    2) I'm confused by the Ferrari museum website, looks like there are (2) museums, one in Marenello and another in Modena about 20 minutes apart and they *can* shuttle you back and forth I believe. Worth doing both? If there is time to do only one - which is better?

    3) Is the track tour and bus ride on the factory grounds any good?

    4) Anyone tried the trip from the port of La Spezia in a rental?

Thanks for any and all feedback. Of course, my greatest fear is I will go and then come back and have to have a Ferrari, and that would really hurt my retirement account...lol

Museum is ok, lots of stuff. Try an f1 simulation car (small fee). Can be done in an hour. Then what?

You could try to get a factory tour, but I think you need a dealer to help arrange. That is very cool. I think it was an hr long too.
Maybe go to Lamborghini too? I believe close enough.
I did Ducati factory tour same day, was cool. Some similarities to Ferrari.
In Modena check out Balsamic winery . I did that and a Parma-Reggianno cheese maker and a prosciutto processor.
Lots to do. Plan in advance. Have fun. Florence is cool too.

If your a owner contact your local dealer to set up a real tour.

The bus tour is all I could do because I went to europe not knowing I could have set this up.

Still cool went to lamborghini as well. I won't lie It was really cool to see them both. Even if your only there for an hour you have been there and seen it with your own eyes.

    Not many can say that.

Good tips so far...but I'm a Porsche owner, not a Ferrari one. I doubt any Ferrari dealer would want to go to the trouble for someone who owns the German competitor, but it would not hurt to ask.

Of course it's worth spending the day! I'd do both museums, they're both cool but different. I'd say I liked the one in Maranello better, but both are interesting.

No idea about car rentals, as I took the train. Didn't know about the track tour or factory bus ride, or prolly would've done those.

While you're there, spend a hundred bucks or so and take a 458 for a ride around Maranello, you'll see the rental places in the area. Just don't get pulled over :)

I did both Ferrari and Ducati factories this past January, well worth it. Saw both the factory and museum at both. Trip of a lifetime for me!

Yes. Two museums with both worth visiting. The one in Modena (not where the factory is) is the Enzo Ferrari Museum. It has a small restaurant, the restored Enzo's house with race cars and the main museum. Honestly you could walk it in 30 mins easily.

The museum in Maranello is considered the main museum and bigger but not as dramatic. That could be done in an hour.

However there is so much more to do in the area. tour Lamborghini, Maserati, Pagani, and Ducati. You can also visit the Panini collection of Maseratis at the Hombre dairy farm and buy world class parmasan cheese.

Inside Maranello there are several gift stores including Hors Ligne, Shopping Formula 1, the Ferrari Store, the gift store next to the museum, and a model store in the town center.

A factory tour includes the engine assembly and production line. I was also able to see the engine foundry, classic restoration, and Corse Clienti as well but am not sure if that is part of the regular tour.

I did Atelier and also got to see the LaFerrari line and finishing line as well as spend the night inside Fiorano at Casa do Ferrari...but that's kind of unusual.

I have made the drive from Santa Margherita to Maranello a couple of times. From La Spezia you can expect a 2+ hour drive. The Autostrada over the mountains [A15?] is a nice drive. But once you get near the A1 expect heavier traffic and trucks. Add the rental car pickup and drop off and you will easily have invested 5 hours. Not sure what your cruise ship dock and ship off times are but this may constrain your time.

There is plenty to see and do in Maranello. The Museum is cool as are all the shops in town. And Cavallino across the street from the factory is a nice place for lunch. But like many Italian ristorante it will take time for lunch. Modena is not far away and a very nice city. The Maserati factory is there. Bologna/Santa Agata with Lambo is a bit of a drive from either.

Depending on how much time you have you might just be carousing around Maranello. If you can swing it the Panini cheese farm and Maserati colliection is a treat. But I think you have to make a reservation and not just show up. But it's been awhile for me so things might be different.

    Have fun!!

If you don't own a Ferrari you know you can't get a factory tour. IMHO the factory bus tour is not worth the time.( I did both). You can u-tube the factory tour if not an owner. But the rest of Maranello is great. The museum, the restaurants, the shops. I did the bus tour and we could not access the track because it was in use. have fun,you will like it.

I drove the SS63 from La Spezia to Modena. It's a quiet road through the hills and far more interesting than an autostrada especially if you have a sporty rental.

Was just there this last January, definitely worth the visit for any Ferrari fan! I took the trenitalia from Florence to Modena, then from there I was shuttled between Museo Enzo Ferrari and the Ferrari Museum outside the factory in Maranello. Arrived around noon and left at 4pm feeling like I saw everything. Also, like others have said, visit other local mfrs factories if you can... Have a great trip!

Things might have changed in the 12 years since I've been there, but look into taking the train and saving some cash and hassle. You can easily walk to the train depot from the port at La Spezia. The depot is on the eastern edge of downtown, I'd guess about 3 -4 blocks from the ocean. Depending on which train you get, it's about an hour to the Mar./Mod. area.
La Spezia is not a bad see in and of itself. Almost no tourists. They close the central block of the town one day a week (it used to be Thursdays) for a farmer's market. Buy some fruit to snack on and walk around and see how the locals do business. It's a good show.
    Have a safe trip.

The Ferrari museums are easy to get into. The hard part is getting the inside factory tour which is great. I have done the Porsche, Mercedes, and BMW factory tour and they are pretty good. The Ferrari factory tour is the best of all of them. The Porsche factory tour also needs a reservation and you have to be a Porsche owner.

    In 2012 I visited:

    Ferrari Museum
    Enzo Ferrari Museum
    Lamborghini factory
    Pagani factory

Lamborghini was my favorite out of them all. No ownership required either.

How far is the Lambo factory from the Ferrari Museum? Walking distance? Cab Ride?

Good tip on the train, may do that instead of the rental car....

Definitely not walking distance. IIRC took me about 30 mins to drive but I did get a bit lost.

I believe the Lambo is in Modena, 12-15 Kilometers from Marenello.

It's in Sant'Agata and is indeed about 45 minutes driving. Pagani is near there as well.

Eat at the Bull Bar (cafe across the street) and rent a Lamborghini.

I stayed in Modena and that gave easy access to all locations.

    Hotel Real Fini was fabulous.

Ticket info on the museum's website...you can buy combo ticket for F Museum in Maranello and Enzo Museum in Modena plus bus ticket (about 20 minutes. Has anybody stayed at the Hotel Locanda del Mulino in Maranello please? Opinions? I hear plus and minus about Planet hotel, although location is ideal. Thanks

I found it very interesting, I stayed in Maranello for 3 days over my 30th following a drive through France & Monaco in our 550 Maranello. It's a very industrial town where as you can imagine EVERYTHING is Ferrari. We did an owners factory tour, visited both museums, Fiorano circuit, Clienti Corse etc etc.

One word of warning..... You'll get hooked if you go!
