Greetings to all - I am planning a holiday to Hawaii (island of Oahu) this coming spring, and want to be able to explore the island a bit. Only part of Oahu that I have seen thus far is in and around the HNL airport!

I have discovered a couple of places that will rent Ferraris by the day (355's and 360's, along with Porsches and other stuff) and am considering the idea of a Ferrari tour around the island via the outer ring road which follows the coastline.

Has anyone ever done this tour? Is it worth the effort? But, most importantly, are the road conditions and traffic such that a Ferrari can be justified? Or, should I simply use a Rent-A-Buick for this one due to the roads being choked with tourists, roads in poor condition, or the like. I'd really hate to be in a Ferrari, forced into crawling around in first gear for miles behind a row of tour buses!

Any B.T.D.T. stories would be welcome!

Thanks and Cheers - DM / Ohio

The traffic dissipates out of town, but don't expect to do too many high speed runs. And yes, people do call in and tell on you in Hawaii.

Want another alternative? Rent sportbikes. They are only $100 a day or so. And just as fast. And immune to traffic. This is assuming you are licensed and comfortable with sportbikes and riding in the occasional rain shower.

Rent a Porshe cabrio instead.Less expensive and more fun.Ferrari costs $500-$900/day;Porshe $400/day.Or,better yet, rent a Jeep 4wd so you can drive on trails at North Shore. You can drive the whole island in about 21/2hrs.Lots of traffic downtown/Waikiki,not much fun sitting in traffic.

I rented a Harley on Maui and the was the best time ever. If you have a motorcycle license, do it! If you do, make sure you get a full helmet because the flying bugs on the islands are about three pounds each!

    Dave,

Not too many places to open it up on Oahu. H2 from aiea to north shore has a long, straight flow, if no police are around. Police are cracking down on traffic violations and speeding this past year so be careful. Also, there's Barbers Point, a race track on south-west side of island, near Ko'Olina. Have fun and be careful whatever you do.

    Regards

Like these guys mentioned, there's nowhere to really open one up. That said, it might still be fun to cruise around.

I rented a 308 on our honeymoon in 1986. Fun to tool around in - my first F-car experience after years of drooling! Found Robin Master's estate and had our pic taken in the tidepool with me holding my wife like that shot in the opening sequence of the show! THey were filming the building demolition episode scene downtown. We started early and really made a day of it stopping at Haunama (sp?) Bay, Sunset Beach, gosh I can't remember all the places now! THe coolest thing was opening her (the car!) up going through the tunnel! Now that was the highlight! Had to turn around and go back through and do it again! Funny thing is, I ended up buying the same year ('83) when I bought my 308! Anyway, long story short we had a load of fun but don't expect to get it into 5th or 6th gear! Back then it cost me $230 with full replacement insurance (required) and I thought it was a fortune - until I started her up! If you are already an owner (sorry, did not read your profile), you might be disapointed. A buddy of mine rented a 348 in Vegas and ran the snot out of it in the desert. If that is your thing, you might as well save your $$$. If this is your first F-car experience, you will have a blast! Have fun!
    Aloha!

The first thing you need to figure out is that if you are anywhere near Waikiki you might as well just walk around. Motorcycles and mopeds are great for that area. There are tons of Mustangs and Sebring convertibles for rent out there but you will just blend in. There are several exotic car rental places in waikiki, but who really wants to sit in traffic in a Viper? The second and most important thing you need to realize is that the Police officers rarely drive in their squads!! The cities that they work in pay them to drive their own cars as to cut down on costs and gas prices. I saw a Carrera get run down in a heartbeat comming out of Mililani Town by a wickedly fast Black Mustang cobra with a little blue light on top. A couple seconds later the officer stepped out of the Mustang with his ticket book in hand. If you get onto one of the bases and get cought speeding by an acutal MP (Not those ***** rent-a-cops) you are pretty much screwed. See there is something about speeding on federal property that they really frown upon and it will never come off your record (Trust Me).

So in response I would suggest that you look for something a bit more practical for Hawaii. Along with you sticking out like a sore thumb you are more prone to theft too! Save the Ferrari or other Exotics for Vegas or a trip up or down PCH! It is much safer, and you can have alot more fun!!

Dave, If you are not fixed on Oahu, try the big island. Hawaii has some great roads and pleanty of room for the go pedal.

Not quite. In some ways, it's actually a "better" type of ticket to receive. The reason for this is that the points are not put on your license, no matter which state it's from.

What makes it a little more ominous is that it turns into a federal arrest warrant if you DON'T pay it. That is a very serious matter. So, if you get a ticket issued by a federal officer, just smile and pay it. They are actually pretty cheap, much cheaper than city or state police tickets.

No it does go on your record. It may not give you points, and it may not affect your insurance, but when PD runs your record it will show up.

Anywho I would go to Kona and rent the 356 replica that they have there on the corner by the wharf and run that thing up and down Saddle Road!! It is probably in the contract that you cannot use that road but it would be tons of fun!!!! Maybe even take it up to the observatory's base camp! kind of cold though!
