A friend of mine signed up for the Navy and is leaving in Sep. She basically signed up before realizing how much she was in love with someone she feels she belongs with. She signed up for 6 years and this would most likely kill anything they would have together and she is regretting her decision to join every minute. She is not trying to betray her country or anything, and she had already accepted the fact she will serve the 6 years. I am trying to see if I can help her a little bit, I just see how this is tearing her apart. If anyone knows anything let me know, but as far as I know its in stone once that contract is signed.

I don't believe there is any way out of it. I believe she's going to get a big lesson in responsibility. When you're an adult and you commit to do something, you need to follow through. Think before you commit.

Sounds to me like some military service might do her maturity level some good.

I thought you weren't truely committed until you were sworn in(after signing the contract)? If this is the guy she is supposed to be with, then he'll be there for her. Wish her well......

Even after going through meps and getting swarn in you can still get out. I was 2 weeks away from going to boot camp with the usmc and I dropped out.

I don't know anything about this issue...

Except if it was me I would research a lawyer who deals with such things...

My guess is there is a way...

edit: if she is serious about getting out of this, she shouldn't waste any time. get to a lawyer. find out her options. find out if there are any repercussions if she does get out of her obligation (i.e., would it mean a dishonorable discharge which may inhibit her future)

Part of it depends if the she took anything from the Navy, scholarship money, sign on bonus, things like that. If you're off the street its a bit easier. Also I know of people who failed drug tests once they got to boot camp - might not look good on your record though.
Also I bet she wouldn't feel quite as drawn to her love interest if she wasn't commited to the Navy. I give them a few months if she doesn't join the Navy.
I think if you drop out very early in your training < 90 days. Your record gets a failure to adapt to military life or something close. Still not great for your record but I don't think it goes down as a dishoronable discharge.

Is she still in school? I know someone who had committed to join the Army out of high school. He decided he was in love and wanted out. By dropping out of school and not graduating, it somehow voided the commitment and he was able to later get his GED and go on to college.

This was about 8 years ago so things might be different now.

I thought you could get out of any such military contract at any time, it just shows up as dishonorably discharged on your record, which may or may not have some bearing on future employment

Yes you can get out of it. My cousin was in a similar situation except he realized he was in love with being a lazy a**. He just had to give back the signing bonus and was out of it. I believe its the "at will termination" work doctrine that allows you to quit anytime you want.

That sounds about right. They know that most will probably blow the money and be stuck going forward.

No way is it a dishonorable discharge. You pretty much have to kill a baby and rape its mother to get a dishonorable discharge.

That said, I have seen the rare employment application that asked about military service, asking if you got an honorable discharge. There are lots of discharges besides honorable and dishonorable. medical, general, "other-than-honorable" (which means you raped the baby but didn't kill it or its mother) medical.....

Point is, employers who ask are looking for an honorable discharge. It's really the best way to get out, but that means doing your time and not raping any babies.

my cousin signed on for six years and says it is difficult to get out if at all. He has served six years and will probably not be staying on once his contract ends this year. He says war with iran is coming and he'd prefer not to be involved.

BAD IDEA, as some future employers look down on GED grads.
That is a big deal when an employer has 20-50-100-1,000 possible candidates to choose from, it's one thing they 'can' use to narrow down their selection pool.

If he's really the one for her, they can get married, and the Navy will move him wherever she gets stationed. I'd at least wait until boot camp is over to consider that option though. If he won't wait through boot camp, she hasn't wasted her time.

Interesting to get this info especially from someone that sees first hand what they're doing to prepare for this. Gulp!

Tell her to slip behind her commanding officer and give him the "Dreaded Rear Admiral". :D
She may leave with an honourable discharge :D

Thanks for all the input. That tidbit about Iran is scary. I showed her all of the info, and told her what you all said. She told me it is a Felon to back out now. She already took the oath and everything I guess. Plus she has alot of pressure from her family to stay in (asian family, big on commitment). I am not sure what she is going to do, but because of her honor and not wanting to let her family down it looks like she is going to be miserable until she gets over him. She joined thinking there isnt anything left for her, not really because she wanted to be in. Weird situation, but I did what I could. Thanks guys for all the input.

What does her loving someone have to do with it? FYI, you can be in the Navy and love someone, be married, have children...the whole deal...I was in the US Navy and never regretted it...GO NAVY!

You can get out by Just not swearing in. At the final thing before you are inducted you are made to raise the right hand and swear in... until then you are not "officially in"

I know because my girlfriend did this also and she got out of it by not going to the swearing in ceremony... no charges, not anything

If she signed on for six years she probably signed into a critical rating. Something like subs, electronics technicians, nukes or some such. When I was in the Navy it was a normal 4 year commitment for the seaman(above decks) and fireman(below decks) ratings and six years for specialties that require extensive "A" schools. There is usually a signing bonus for the critical ratings also that could have to be paid back. I heard of several people who got out even after swearing in but I do not know how...sorry.

I do know of one guy who got drummed out during boot camp. He decided he wanted out so he began wetting the bed at night. He ended up getting out. I do not know what type of discharge it was classified as. Probably just something like "unfit for military service".
