Guys & Gals, Will post all auction lots and then cover the most interesting lots available......... Will also try to post some data and stats so you can get relativity year on year......All figures in US$ unless stated. Lets begin with Bonhams

Bonhams, Fernaninda Beach Golf Club, 2800 Bill Melton Road, Fernaninda Beach, FL 32034 or
Bonhams : The Amelia Island Auction

Auction will be held 10/3/16 @ 10.30am local time & will be streamed online at the above website

This auction has only ever been held once, the debut in 2015 being relatively successful... Total sales for the 82 cars offered in 2015 were $13.8 million, average per car $215k, 78% sell thru rate & 57% sold under low estimate/ 15% over high...... All good figures. This years low to high estimates for the 96 cars offered are $34 to $39 million. It should be noted that the four big cars will be the great test of this auction and the combined value of the 275, 540k & Type 57 will be at least a third of the total.....

    Looking at this years offerings, there is all the common as muck consignments, early 911, turbo 911, Ferrari 308 & Testa Rossa, 300sl, E-Types but then there is also some really interesting machinery including what must be the first hybrid (lot 152) and grand touring cars of the 30s from Packard, Delage, Chrysler and Isotta - Fraschini. Something for everyone...... Above this four lots stand out for different reasons;

Lot 139 - Bugatti Type 57SC Vanden Plas Tourer #57-541. All Bugatti are desirable, although the Veyron is arguably the most vulgar car ever made, the classics especially. In the scheme of Bugatti there are three high-points, one the irrelevant but oh so fabulous Type 41 Royale, the ultra stylish but ultimately unsuccessful 1930s Type 59 Grand Prix. Finally there is the Type 57S with its 3.3 litre 160BHP Type 57S or 200bhp with supercharger fitted (57SC) and radically low chassis. Just 48 were made with multiple choices of bodywork, the most common style was the Atalante, by the works and Gangloff, while perhaps the most famous were the 3 Atlantic.

A handful of Type 57S were purchased chassis only and bodied by the customers favorite coachbuilder, #57-541 was one of these and the first owner George Rand ordered the car through Bugatti London and requested the slightly awkward Vanden Plas body (#3595) that is original to this car. After bouncing around the USA & UK it ended up in the hands of Peter Agg who had Crosthwaite & Gardner restore the car with an authentic Type 57 supercharger. As for value it is about comparing the beauty of an Atalante or Corsica bodied car with what is not the most beautiful car ever built. The last Type 57S public sale was #57-523 which Gooding sold for $8.7 million in 2013.... I would personally imagine that it will sell in the same ballpark $7.5 - 10 million would be my guess with the joy of open top motoring countering any lack of beauty.....

2 - Ferrari 275 GTB/4 #10325. One of the 331 ultimate spec 275 GTB/4 this car gains browny points for the 45 year ownership of Wade Carter. As custodians go the length of ownership and lack of restoration ensures that it hasn't been messed with nor over restored and for some that will be highly valued. OTOH it has high mileage which I would consider it a sign that it can be driven without fear (and imo preferrable to some garage queen) but may well put off some potential purchasers..... Comes with Massini report and other bits and bobs. Will be interesting to see what sort of money this brings and the estimate seems pretty reasonable at $2.7 - 3.2 million.

3 - Mercedes Benz 540K Cabriolet A #154083. Short of the Spezial Roadster these are the ultimate in late 1930s Merc technology and style. Not the lightest nor the most powerful these were all about build quality and with only 32 built with this bodywork are now highly desirable. Originally owned by Embiricos of English Le Mans fame, no history is given for the car between 1944 and the 1980s and with a change of colour to black but it is still undeniably beautiful and should get a new home at between $3 and 4 million, might even do a little more.

4 - Maserati 8C-3000. Anyone interested in automobile archeology really much read the description and work out for themselves exactly what this car is. An original it is not but it does have an original gearbox, rear axle and crankcase....... All from different 8c but still original equipment, I would also note that it does have FIVA approval. The last time a true Grand Prix type 8c was for sale was when the ex. Sutherland cars were sold back in 2000 and they were much more historically relevant not to mention more original. Another comparator would be the two Type 26 which sold at Bonhams in 2012 and based on the lesser of those two I would guess this car would be $1 million but who the hell knows really.....

One should never post too quickly lol....

Have now found out that the estimate on the Bugatti is $11 - 13 million which is quite a lot. For some perspective this one lot is also expected to net one third of the total auction revenue so it really will all depend on them getting a deal done.

What is the typical market value for something like this? I thought the estimate would be half of that. I would much rather have a Type 57SC Atalante and they aren't worth about 8-10.

Yes very nice car with the Alpinas I foolishly sold off 10 years ago. How I obtained those is a very nice story for another day though. A few things worth noting on this example. 1) I don't think white blinkers were available back then, 2) those sports seats look nice but my girlfriend at the time really hated them. And 3) the unicolor inside and out works better in the USA than it does in Europe, where people like contrasting color schemes rather than matching.

The last public sale of an Atalante was #57-523 for $8.7m @ Gooding in 2013 in great colours and perfect provenance so that would be a base point to my theory of a current value of $8 - 11 million for an Atalante.

Online @ View Lots | Classic Car Auctions | RM Sotheby's

Held every year since 1999 this was originally the only Amelia Island auction before Gooding and later Bonhams joined. Always successful, RM has had a habit of offering rather spectacular consignments, last years 400SA Spider and 2014s offering of the Pray collection notable sales. This year the consignments appear comparatively weak compared to Gooding and Bonhams but more on that later.

Statistically speaking sales volumes have been 99 of 101 @ 98%, total sales $60.1 mil. (2015), 88 of 91 @ 96.7%, $35.9 mil. (2014) & 81 of 88 @ 92%, $26.8 mil. (2013). This year RM is offering 93 lots which is pretty much average for them, as is the total low estimate valuation is approx. $51 million with the on request Tour de France included...... Certainly the most interesting statistic is to consider that in 2014 only 33% of lots were sold below low estimate with a large jump to 52.5% in 2015 and perhaps the best judge of the market will be to see if that figure doesn't jump again this year.....

My personal selection of cars to watch this year are as follows

1 - 250 Tour de France #0805/0619 - A very cool car with a decent racing history this car was originally sold to Pierre Noblet who raced it 10 times and finished 3rd at both Reims and Monza against strong competition. Sold thru several hands it was crashed twice including a severe accident against the wall of the Peugeot factory. The still damaged car found its way into the ownership of ex. NART team mechanic Wayne Sparling in 1975 and he stored the car for some 20 years. Sparling himself restored the car and fitted new bodywork between the mid 1990s and early 2000s before using the car until recently.

RM lists estimate available upon request and rather than your author commenting on value I will quote two of my trusted & respected fellow f-chatters/ friends. Marcel Massini suggests that less than $5 million would be required to buy it. Bira states that he thought closer to $4 million would be enough. My opinion is that $5 million, maybe $6 even, is about right taking into account the cost and difficulty of a new restoration to take it back to original factory specification bodywork etc. At that price though it would be a good buy because you could drive it, hell race it because there is no risk of damaging some unreplacable original part if you crash it, if that's your cup of tea. Could be an absolute value and definitely one to watch.

2 - 1939 Mercedes Benz 540k #408371. An original 540k Cabriolet A with one off bodywork and great provenance and best of show at Pebble Beach in 1973. Restored by Mike Fennel in the early 1990s etc. Whats not to like right? Cream over Red is what, there are few of the supercharged Merc's that look good in anything other than black in my eyes, maybe it looks better in the flesh? Quoted estimate of $3 - 4 million seems ballpark.

3 - 1911 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Lawton Tourer #1544. As common with most Rolls Silver Ghost is bodywork changes in keeping with their great age but this one is one of a handfull of early SG to keep their bodywork along with all key components. Certainly an extraordinary artifact that any owner should be proud to own, if 105 year old cars are your bag that is. Estimated at double what a rebodied Ghost would go for and worth every cent.

4 - Now we head to the other end of the spectrum, the insane but cool 2014 Pagani Huayra, #62 of 100 made in this format. Delivered complete with $260k (a 458 worth) of extra's these bring a new level of extreme to the supercar world and this example is estimated about 50% over the msrp at $1.9 - 2.2 million. One little point, this example has traveled 400 miles in two years and would be nice to hope that it will be more than just a garage ornament in future.

5 - Edsel Fords one off Model 18 Speedster is an interesting relic that is worthy of attention from an American historical perspective. It is one of three and the only one to this specification/ bodywork BUT its history is vague and being cynical I note that it was modified but the modifier kept the original parts for 50 years. Okay it is possible that this is exactly what happened. This is an unrepeatable opportunity and estimated as such at $1.2 - 1.4 million.

6 - The usual collection of Ferrari including 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica LWB Coupe Aerodinamico by Pininfarina #3949SA estimated at $2.7 to 3.3, 1968 Ferrari 330 GTS by Pininfarina #10817 at $2.3 - 2.6 & 1973 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider at $2.5 - 3 million. The 400sa seems pretty reasonably estimated, 330GTS average and Daytona Spider pretty strong imo. It is likely that these three will offer a gauge to where the market is at since they are all supposedly good examples of their types and can easily and readily be compared to others that have sold.

Bidding was only ever going to go to $2.5m. Last few bids were small. Nice car but a 'driver'. Only 275 at Amelia, I think.

i was in the room for this...they struggled to get to $2.5M hammer price
As usual with these auctions, a lot of cars did NOT sell and the ones that did were well under estimate...only a few I saw reached mid level of the estimate.

can't wait to see how the Seinfeld Porsche collection does at Gooding today.....
