    Anyone ever get this?

I was surfing Amazon.com the other night and put a bunch of books in my shopping cart. Some of them were cooking/baking, some computer, some maching, just varied things.

I put them in the cart to keep them highlighted, with the intention of cross-checking reviews from other sites to see which ones to buy. So I go back to Amazon the following morning, and I have a big window at the top telling me the prices have changed on some things. But it was about 20 books out of maybe 30 that prices went up. Some went up by $0.80, some went up by $5.

Whats up with that? What is Amazon like a commodity market now where pricing is to the minute? I have never had that happen before. Do they slightly discount as you add to your cart to get you to buy now, and if you don't they start jacking prices up?

These were all Amazon.com items, not things sold through their so-called partner stores. Just seemed weird to me. Am I the only one?

This scammola was discussed a while back. Their software jacks prices on stuff left in your basket. Most people probably wouldn't notice. Maybe just use a different browser and reorder.(so that cookies can't detect who you are)

Actually, there is: Add to Wishlist on Amazon, if you go to that you might be able to just keep them in check and not have to deal with accidentally buying the items or being charged extra. Oh, the Add to Wishlist, is on the right hand side, it should be under Quantity and Add to Shopping Cart. Hope that helps. :)

    I KNEW IT!!!!!

While we're on the topic, travel sites like Expedia and Travelocity do this too. If you are comparing various flight options, they will drop the price $5 or $10. Ever notice that you pretty much find the same price on all the sites? Like $204.50 here, $202.89 there, etc. They drop it a few bucks to get you to see its the lowest price then buy it. But if you go back a day or two later, the price goes up. Trick is to clear your cookies, or use a different browser or different computer and you get the lower pricing again, especially if you browse around a bit.

I was quite POed when this happened at Amazon. It only came to a difference of $40 or so on $600 worth of books and loot, but the principle still irks me!

BEST BUY were caught recently offering one price on the net and then a phony web page in store that showed higher prices. So when you came into the store and said I saw an item for X they'd say, OK let me check. Nope, we're showing a price of X+, you want it? They were fined for this practice by a State's Attorney General back east.

I usually have 40-50 items in my Amazon shopping cart at any one time (order a few hundred items a year) and get those price adjustments all the time both up and down. From my own informal observation most of the changes are to electronics and CDs and almost never to books. Just checking mine right now I get this:

Please note that the price of XXXXX has increased from $1,699.00 to $1,712.95 since you placed it in your Shopping Cart. Items in your cart will always reflect the most recent price displayed on their product detail pages.

Please note that the price of XXXXX has decreased from $18.98 to $14.99 since you placed it in your Shopping Cart. Items in your cart will always reflect the most recent price displayed on their product detail pages.

Never seen any prices change more than maybe $20 which really isn't a big deal on a $1000+ item

Like MarkPDx, I've had some items go up a little and other items go down a little when left in the cart for some time. I don't keep a record, but it's more like 50-50 than 90-10. The vast majority of items haven't changed.

I've noticed Amazon prices sometimes change Fri-Sun for CDs and DVDs. I started a wish list to keep track of items, both availability and pricing, and buy a few at a time when the prices drop. The price difference usually isn't significant at around $5, sometimes less. Example: I was watching a CD set at $45 that kept changing to $50 (retail) then back to $45 several times over a couple week span. But, if it's something you really want, don't wait because I've had a few items go out of stock that are still unavailable.

I dont see any problem with this if they are giving you a heads up. Theyre free to change prices if they want and you're free to not buy.

The software detects that you've put something in your cart and they adjust pricing in the hopes that you don't notice it? You don't see anything wrong with that? Sounds like a bit of a swindle to me. You can bet this works in their favor more times than not. Personally I wouldn't put any items in a cart unless I was ready to buy. I think their software is invasive anyway. They profile you based on what you're looking at and buying. There's probably a lot more to it then anyone knows about too. It wouldn't surprise me that they are sharing info with the Feds based on your reading habits if for whatever reason you get flagged as a "person of interest."(I read that the TSA is now taking note of what your reading when you travel)

They also were caught selling used items as new items. This happened to me a couple weeks before news broke of it. I got a CD that appeared to be new, but when I opened it one CD was badly scratched, the 2nd was missing (2-disc album), and the liner notes were definitely not off-the-press new.

Several posters have said a large warning box pops up to tell you prices have changed... the consumer needs a certain level of responsibility here.

Id bet anything they arent sitting around waiting for someone to put a certain book in their cart and leave it overnight just so they can raise the price $1 and GET YA !

Prices change...fact. And someone posted that their price went down...no ones complaining when that happens.

I leave stuff in my Amazon shopping cart and wishlist all the time and I only see prices change on 1 or 2 items once every few months and there is always a highlighted warning every time I login. The prices also go down about 1/3 and go up about 2/3. So to me it doesn't look like anything more than normal re-pricing events.

If you think they're running a "smart" shopping cart scam, you can prove it by just going back and recheck the prices without being logged in or with cookies cleared; take screenshots of the different prices and post it up.

Well, I put items in my cart around 11pm. The next day (probably 9-10 hours later) about 75% of the prices had changed. Many of them only changed by a couple of %, but they were all in the UP direction. It seems strange to me that someone at Amazon decided that the book that was $38.49 should now be $38.85. I mean, really, why would it change that way? I would guess Amazon has a margin they are trying to maintain, and relatively fixed prices they pay for books. The action of the shopping cart reminded me of a commodity market, where one expects constant price fluctuations.

Its like going to the supermarket. You expect the price of Lobster to change on occasion, but you sure don't expect the price of a newspaper to change +$0.25 one day, then -$0.08 the next. Its not much of a commodity item.

Or, more like you have that lobster packaged up and expecting to pay a price of $11.99 a lb, toss it in your cart and by the time you make it to check out it's $12.99 a lb. ;)

IMO, there's no excuse for the price of a book to change overnight to a higher amount just because you put it in your cart. It's a scam and they're hoping you just blow it off(or not even notice) and order it anyway. When you think of all the transactions they do a year this little switcheroo probably adds up to several million in robbed revenue.

Wow, all these conspiracy theories. I knew Jeff Bezos was an alien from planet Amazon. I've had prices go up/down all the time in my cart. I appreciate the fact that they make it very noticable, and I've purchased quite a few items that I might not have at a higher price.

If you don't think they change prices unless it's in your shopping cart, keep an eye on some popular high end electronics. I've seen price swings of $200+ over a week or so before I brought my HD TV (wasn't in my cart). Sometimes the price changed several times in one day. I think it's just supply/demand/competitor's prices/predictive pricing software to maximize sales/profits.

Not whoa, it's in his cart, can we squeeze $0.49 cents more from this s*cker? IMHO.

What pissed me off about Amazon is if you buy a used book from a reseller listed, that reseller charges you like $6.00 for shipping - PER BOOK.

Never mind the fact you might buy 5 used books from the SAME place, they still charge you PER BOOK, you cannot accumulate shipping charges into one shipment.

The bookseller told me they have no choice in the matter - Amazon forces them to do this.

    I canceled my order.

    PS -

The one thing I have seen go up in price are the high-end video cards that are AGP.
I guess they don't make many AGP cards anymore, so when they are gone, they are gone.
