I currently have State Farm for all of our cars including a 2002 360 spider. A very good friend of mine just opened an Allstate and sent me a qoute that is $20 a month less than State Farm. I have herd in the past the Allstate does NOT have a good rep. and will drop you if you get a ticket or get into an accident. I have a clean record and have been with State Farm since 1994.

Any thoughts would help - Thanks

I creamed a rental car in April and the wife hit another a couple of years ago.

    Still with Allstate

$20 bucks seems hardly worth it to move

I agree, for $20 just stay where you are.

I had Allstate for perhaps 10 years and never had any trouble with a couple of claims. Last year, they really jacked my price and after some searching, State Farm was way way less. For instance, Allstate wanted about 3600/year for my new 430, State Farm is about 1000.

I was getting killed at State Farm, switched to Geico. Now instead of $2300 for one car I pay $1400 for two cars, the second one being my 328.

No accidents, so I can't comment on cancellation. But I agree with the others that $20 is trivial. Usually there's a "persistence" or long-time customer discount if you stick with one insurer.

How does Geico treat the Ferrari? Do they do agreed value?

Nope, based on purchase price. I guess if the 328 market heats up I'll have to revisit this.

Also, Geico only has a few of the "common" Ferraris that they insure: 308, 328 and possibly one or two others. They wouldn't touch something like a Daytona or F40 -- they transfer you to some other company totally seperate.

In my opinion, the real proof of an insurance company's value is when you have a claim. I have always been with State Farm. I had one Ferrari and one Porsche accident (none of which were my fault) and I was able to have the cars fixed properly at an appropriate place of my choosing. I don't have any info. on Allstate's claim handling experience but this is what you should check into. $20 a month savings will disappear in a hurry if you cannot have the car fixed properly.

Allstate just dropped everyone here for earthquake coverage in an attempt to avoid the impending loss they would have suffered. None of the other companies have done that, so it kind of speaks to their character. Sure, it is a business, but if they're the only company refusing to renew policies, it's pretty lame. Also, they jacked up my premium to 3x what I was paying last year after a relatively minor accident. I don't even know why I'm still with them, I'll be switching soon.

Has anyone else switched to a different company, got a good rate, and when the first renewal comes around they jack it to more than what you were paying before you switched?

Last time I talked to Geico about a rate quote they asked me for a list of my cars. I told them and they said they would call back later. A few minutes later they called back and said they would not insure ANY of my cars (two Ferraris, a Maserati, a Caterham Seven, etc) because of their 'sporting nature". As far as I can tell, they will not insure anything I'd ever want to drive. All my cars are now insured with Hagerty for about $2500 a year, which is MUCH MUCH less than any other insurer quoted me. You do have to have one every day vehicle NOT insured with them ( I have a tow vehicle, ML55 which fills that function). If you have several cars, Hagerty is excellent.

Im a Insurance Broker in the Bay area and would say Geico has some of the most negative feedback from past clients I have had to deal with. Hagerty is a good bet if you have a daily driver.

Make sure on your high end cars you are gettung agreed value and not stated value or actual cash value policies.

    Someday I hope to have a F-car......

jmn, what Ferraris do you have? They had no issue with my 328, and they have the VIN and know exactly what it is.

I had a good experience with Geico when my Jeep was hit (uninsured motorists/illegals in LA). State Farm was as good, but stupidly expensive. But what's the difference between "agreed" value and "stated" value? (hoping this isn't too much of a thread hijack...)

With an agreed value policy the insurance company agrees up front on the value of the car. In the event of a loss there should be little to argue about. With stated value you may be required to prove its worth in the event of a loss and the company has the right to dispute your valuation. You are more likely to find an agreed value policy at a specialty car insurer.

the saying goes in the insurance industry if you have Allstate you are still uninsured, they also pay less per hour than any others for bodywork, the shop that painted my cars dropped them because of this so your choices are limited for repairs to shops that will take less $$ for work

Thanks John - very helpful. I just bought mine last year, so I may look into an "agreed value" policy in a couple of years.

There’s no single auto insurance company that consistently provides the best value. In fact, costs among insurers vary widely depending on the exact car being insured, your zip code, and so on. The only way to shop is to get quotes from all the reputable companies. In their March 2006 issue Consumer Reports ranked 27 insurers on overall customer satisfaction. I’m sure any local library would have it available. They did not include specialty insurers, of course.

Interesting that Geico would insure your 328. They would not insure my 512 Boxer or my 308 gtb (Euro glass dry sump). Perhaps it has to do with the age of the cars too. I was thoroughly disgusted with them, especially since they contacted me to provide a quote, rather than the other way around. I think I was contacted due to membership in a professional society (American Society of Civil Engineers). They go for people they think are low risk, but apparently the same is true for the cars- most civil engineers drive Taurus wagons- go ahead CEs, flame away. Unfortunately, I'm not an engineer, I'm a mad scientist, so their profiling failed.
I really think Hagerty is the way to go if you have more than one exotic- stated value, good reputation on claims, and relatively inexpensive because you only pay one liability policy regardless of the number of cars you insure. After all, how many can you drive at the same time?

I have agreed value with Allstate and I have in writing with my policy that I can take the car anywhere to get fixed without issue. Including the dealer.

The shop that painted my Ferrari did drop Allstate and will not do any work from them, the only insurance company they turned away.

I went through major BS with them from a woman in a suv insured with Allstate that nailed my 930 2 years ago and was ticketed for the cause of the accident and its still unresolved, they are terrible to work with and fight everything.

I don't think it is worth the switch for $20 a month. I was with State Farm, then Geiceo, then GE, then AIG, now Allstate. State Farm has a really good reputation for paying claims, Allstate does not. But for me, my State Farm rep's answer to 'Why are you raising my rates 20-30% a year?' was 'Because we can.' That was all I needed to hear to want to dump them. Insurance is a major rip with any carrier, so I am glad to be going with the low price. For me Allstate is about half of what State Farm wants. Never an accident and no tickets in the last 9 years.

Have any of you ever looked into Grundy Worldwide?
Supposedly agreed value, unlimited mileage. I don't know if they do exotics or not, their website says classic, antique, and collector cars.
