I'd like to hear the time it took from when you received your allocation, to when they started building, to when you received delivery. I.e. January allocation, March build started, car left Italy in July. Thanks!
I paid deposit and want my delivery 1st march so i can get a 14 plate in england. Could have had it earlier but its winter here nearly so will wait till march. They said they i have finalize my order in december and they will start production in january so the car will be here sometime in feb ready for march. Can't wait
I contacted dealer in U.S. who I buy my cars from and he said he needs as many confirmed orders as possible to boost allocation and timeline. Nothing definite yet. Best
Interesting. So far the responses have been 3-6 months after allocation you rec'd delivery. That's what I thought. From past threads it seemed like 5 months was about the average. Here's why I asked. Back in June 2013, after some disagreements with Ferrari of Tampa Bay regarding my delivery date, I got fed up and asked for my deposits back ($20,000 each on 2 cars). They came back and said they can understand my frustration over the misunderstanding and asked if I would keep the orders if they got me an Oct-Dec allocation. I responded, ok but only if you can commit to that. I got it in writing via email. October came and I never heard from them. Last week, I asked for an update on my allocation and delivery. They said I'd be looking at probably a Dec allocation with maybe an Aug ship date and no guarantees. I was pissed. Throw in the Aug factory shutdown and shipping and your looking at an October delivery. 8-10 months after my allocation? To me this smelled like I was not getting real Dec 2013 allocation, it was just an earlier date to make me feel good. Accordingly i said forget it, you didn't stick to your promise and have let me down for the third time so I'm out. Send me my deposit back. Admittedly i am not used to having to wait 2 years and not used to feeling like the unwanted step child when making a purchase. Perhaps I over reacted and what I went through was normal. To me it felt like I was getting the shaft. However after confirming it takes others 3-6 months to get their car after allocation, I am more confident I was in fact getting the shaft.
Ky1e sorry to hear about your troubles especially when looking for 2 purchases. I called the dealer in May 2013 as a first time Ferrari buyer and asked for a September allocation. I was offered sooner but wanted the build to be after the August shutdown. They were able to get it as they said and it is on the water now to be delivered next month. If you are not locked in proximity wise to one dealer there are others who might assist you better. Good luck with your efforts, I am sure you will find them worth it when you take delivery!
Wow, that was fast. That's what got me frustrated with Ferrari of Tampa Bay, it takes them more than a year longer than your dealer to get the same car--and I had been servicing my existing car with an open checkbook. I think FoTB is low on the F dealer totem pole and gets bad allocations.
Kyle, I'm getting my car from the same dealer as you. Which cars were you ordering and when did you give them the deposit?
To answer your initial question specifically, I received an October 2012 build date for my spider in July of 2012. The car was delivered January 7, 2013. The Christmas holidays and hurricane Sandy caused some delay in my case. Typically however, slots are given by Ferrari 3 months in advance. So 3 months in advance for slot and then 3 more months for build and delivery in 6 months is therefore typical. I do know that Ferrari has been VERY stingy with 458 coupe slots. My dealer went 4 months without one. Some customers were thinking of burning the place down thinking they were being "jumped" by others. Not saying anything about FoTB specifically. I am merely telling you that allotments and dealer info is frequently nebulous for unforeseen circumstances. Sorry for your nightmare. Best, Randy
458 spider, deposit given Dec 2012 but there's a little more to it than that. I was a regular customer in the service dept, met with sales and said I was interested in the 458 spider in Spring 2012. Then in June 2012 I called the saleman and told him I'd like to go forward and wire him the deposit today and make it official. He said they don't do wires. I said ok I'll send you the check today just email me the instructions/deposit forms (it's a 1 1/2 hr drive round trip). He never emails me, calls or follows up. I can't believe I have to hound this guy to buy a $330K car. Couple months pass and the next time I'm getting my car serviced at the dealer I tell Anthony the service mgr (whom I really like- very responsive and great service) "I want to give your sales dept some feedback. I want to buy a 458 spider, but they've been very hard to work with. I called xyz saleperson and told him I wanted to put down a deposit but he wont follow up. This has been a pattern with the sales dept when I wanted to buy my 360 spider. Even though I want the car, out of principle I'm not going to chase him down." Still nothing happens. So in December 2012 I capitulate. I call the salesman and say you never emailed me the deposit forms, so I'm driving over there. I pay the deposit in person but express my disappointment in wasting 6 months of allocation waiting time. In March 2013 I totalled my 360 Spider. I have it towed to the dealer. The salesman sees it. I tell him, "Now that I'm Ferrari-less the wait is going to be painful." He says, "No problem we can probably get you an allocation this Spring." I'm psyched! I wait until May before calling him because I don't want to be pushy-- he gave me a great offer. I figure he was making up for the earlier 6 months of wasted time. When I call to check up on the SPring allocation he says, Yeah your looking at Spring 2014! I was like what? So in June I tell him I cant wait that long, I'm going to buy a used 458 spider and I'd like my deposit back. They say, if I can get you an Fall allocation will you change your mind? I say if you can commit to that, ok. I get it in writing (in an email) that I'll get a Oct-Dec allocation. In Oct I ask how its looking. They call back 2 weeks ago and say I'm looking at probably a Dec allocation and maybe an Aug 2014 delivery but no guarantees. I say forget it and ask for my deposit back. They sent it a week later. No call, no note.
I should have been more specific. I wanted an Italia not a Spider so that's what I ordered. Out of curiosity I asked how long it would be for a Spider allocation and was told 1 1/2 year wait, so not too much different than your scenario. I asked about the Speciale and only got a chuckle so meaning not a chance....so I just asked to go ahead and be placed on the 458 replacement list.
so it goes allocation than build than delivery. I thought allocation meant they build it that month? Am I wrong?
458 Italia: May 2013 - Deposit June 2013 - Dealer negotiates HARD and receives a 458 allocation (was told they had to trade a couple of California allocations for a 458 allocation) July 2013 - Status Red 10 (Begins Build Process) September 2013 - 458 on the Atlantic in transit for delivery (Status 90) October 2013 / November 2013 - Projected Delivery to Dealership
I placed my $20k deposit on 02/24/12 in person at the dealership. It looks like your deposit was finally furnished by you a year after mine. Getting a 458 spider in less than two years is considered quick (my expected delivery early Dec 2013). At the time I placed my order NY dealers were quoting my NY friend a 4 year wait. Ferrari is indifferent to selling you a 458 SP because it is worth more than they are selling it for at delivery and they have a two year or longer wait list. Think about this. It is like they are doing you the favor. It does make for an odd experience. At McLaren you can pay $300,000 for a car and get it quickly. It is instantly worth $75,000 less. They need you. They need to "sell" you the car. The Ferrari sells itself. Note: This is the market in the USA.
Jeffery, Thank you for the input on your experience. That definitely puts it into perspective. You had to wait just under 2 years. Now I don't feel singled out and I realize I'm just not cut out for waiting 2 years for a car. That said, it appears lots of other dealers seem to get much quicker allocations than Ferrari of Tampa Bay. Also, since the salesman there have little to do (since they don't have to "sell" cars) at least they could be responsive. To me, that laissez-faire attitude is for sub-par companies. They may have a desirable product, but their service doesn't impress me.
Kyle, the 2 year wait is for the Spider. I believe the current turnaround on a 458 Italia is much, much, quicker. And yes, they should be more responsive. I also had a 360 that I serviced there. I also asked the service department to have someone in sales call me about ordering a 458 SP. I never received a call. For now, we need them more than they need us.
I am a first time buyer. I put my deposit down in March with Algar on an Italia. Car (MY 2014) delivered to me at the end of August. In March, Algar estimated a September delivery at the time of my deposit, so they were right on from Day One. Very simple transaction. Very happy customer.
First time buyer. Bought my Cali through private sale. I was one of the lucky ones. $7500 deposit on spider end of May 2013. June got allocation. July went red 10. September 26 notified car was status 40. October 1 notified spider was on the boat and status 90. Expect November or December delivery.
Yes, we'd love to know what country/area? As Jeff mentioned here in Tampa it's a 18-24 month wait for a Spider.
Pretty low, but all transactions are different, so I'd rather not say in order to preserve their right to make that decision on a case by case basis. But lower than what I have seen posted on these threads.
I placed an order Feb '13 on a '14 Italia, June build slot at Boardwalk Ferrari of Dallas. The sales manager had the allocation available at the time. I was told it would be a June build with a Sep estimated delivery (I think the sales manager was hedging on the delivery underpromising). I was told that I would need to give them a $25K non-refundable deposit (it's called special order fee, IMO --> "special" = "your a new customer, we don't know you") once the order would be accepted by the factory, i.e., once it would be status 10, which happened very quickly. I turned up in a few days with my check, had not problem giving a deposit (special fee whatever), since I wanted the car. The sales manager showed me on the computer screen the status 10 and printed me a copy, as well. That was Feb. The car went red 10 beginning of June. By then, I was a little worried (although coupe allocations are not supposed to be hard to get, they have become very few as of late b/c the factory builds spiders). In the meantime, they had the FNA concierge book me on a factory tour for the end of June, so I figured they wouldn't let me go to the factory if they didn't plan to sell me a car. The sales manager was very honest and kept telling me "don't worry man, you're my June allocation, you saw the sale order, didn't you" Anyway, once it was red 10, it moved fast, it was probably in the assembly line when I was in the factory, but I forgot the vin# at the hotel, so I never saw it (btw - go to the factory tour, it's an amazing experience) ... it showed shipped status July 11, I think, but got actually shipped out of Jenoa the 23rd. The sales manager got me the name of the vessel from the FNA, so I was able to track it real time. It arrived in NJ Aug 8. Then it got stuck there for a while and I kept bugging the dealer. Eventually, it arrived in Dallas Aug 26 and I picked it up Aug 30. Bottom line: 1) Having a reputable dealer / honest and connected sales manager are key. 2) You don't give them deposit (special fee whatever) unless the factory has accepted the order (what is the point otherwise? you just fall in the trap RBK pointed to you). Frankly, they shouldn't ask for a deposit without an allocation (what's the point?) Can't you go to another dealer if you live so far from TB?
I am surprised at the amount of money you all had to put down, i just ordered a brand new coupe, first time buyer, was told I would have to give 5k and they never asked for it. So basically I have ordered a car with 0 down.
