About one year ago, I posted a thread advising people that they should acquire an Alfa 8C Competizione. I felt these cars were “under the radar” and would soon be recognized as iconic, modern supercars by serious collectors. The fact that only 84 were made for the U.S. out of the 500 total worldwide makes them one of the rarest modern exotic cars. The DOT has turned down an attempt to bring Euro Spec 8C’s into this country under the “show and display” provision, so 84 is all we will have until 2033.

I am well aware that some people feel the 8C is just a “rebodied” Maserati. In fact, the engine was developed for the 8C, and later used by Maserati. While the chassis is a development of the Maserati M139/145 chassis, the reduction in wheelbase and different shock and alignment package transforms the car into a serious driver’s car. I believe that most of the individuals who make disparaging remarks about the 8C have either never actually seen one, have never rode in one or have never driven one. Once you have that experience, you will be converted. Besides the engine sound is unique to the 8C, very raw and forthright.

Here is a market update based upon “real” transactions that I have knowledge of as of today. In the fall of 2013, a red, low mile car sold for $185,000 to a major east coast collector who missed out on getting one new. In January 2014, a black car, also very low mileage sold for $215,000 to another major collector. By May, a similar black car with much higher mileage sold from Washington to New Jersey for $270,000. Also last spring, a red California car sold for the same amount. Recently, a red California car with some needs sold for $270,000 while another red, low mile, California car was pulled off the market after an initial agreement to sell at $285,000. The owner then received multiple offers to match the first offer, so he removed the car as he felt the market was changing so quickly. In March, one of only two yellow cars changed hands for $340,000.

At this time, I know of only one available car (in red, the most common color), in Florida with an asking price (today) of $330,000. It will not last long. Exterior color is a major driver of price with these cars; however, almost all the 84 cars are one-offs due to the wide variety of interior combinations that were available.

The 8C is still under the radar, but more major collectors are deciding they need one for their collections and as a result, more cars are going to “permanent” homes and fewer are appearing on the market, with the resulting price adjustments.

Huh? Do you own one of these jewels? No matter, I suspect people who moan about the 8C Competizione simply didn't have the cash or the opportunity to own one, sour grapes... so you're right, they also never saw or drove one. IMO, if you had the cash and the wits about you, you would have jumped at the chance an order one if you had the opportunity to.

As for the engine, if I told you the latest Maserati received a Ferrari V8, would you have been disappointed? Is Maserati less expensive and less of a car/engine maker than ALFA? Case closed. And BTW, who is entrusted with building the 4C?

My 8C preference would of course, have been the Spider as I think it's even more special than the Competizione. My favourite video of the Spider is this Marchettino video... enjoy:

Prices of the 8C are creeping up here in Europe as well, the older coupe I mean, the (better received) Spider less so. Some asking prices of low mileage coupes now approach or even surpass their original MSRP (although they do not sell quickly at all). And thereby indeed as DWR46 already predicted; another car that's fallen into the collector/investor car category.

Makes me wonder though; F12's are still devaluating and are approaching or already touching 8C prices; both beautifull two seater Italian coupes, but the F12's total package is far superior in every measurable way.

It's a beautiful and characterful car. I love them. I didnt enjoy driving it as much as i thought i would, unless the road was super smooth. The rear axle was just too stiff and bumping out all the time. I guess it is more of a GT.

Agree with these sentiments. My experience with ownership was that it was fantastic to look at, but not a good drive when compared to pretty much all of it's contemporaries (at least all of those that I drove). That said, I probably would have kept it if it had a manual transmission.

But time seems to always favor the great looking cars over the great driving cars. I'd expect the 8C will be treasured in 10-20 years time.

Couple of years back two particular cars I had were an F40 and a Alfa 8C. The F40 was a great car but owned it for 15 years therefore sold it. Still have the 8C and bought something to replace the F40. The 8C is a great car in its own right, very enjoyable to drive.
Certainly agree that it is one special design.

    Comments:
The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is a sports car produced by Italian automaker Alfa Romeo between 2007 and 2010. It was first presented as a concept car at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show and later released for sale for the 2007 model year. The name refers to the eight-cylinder (cilindro in Italian) engine (8C) and Alfa Romeo's racing pedigree (Competizione, Italian for 'competition'). Alfa received over 1400 orders for the 8C after the official announcement that the car would enter production. However, only 499 customers ended up with the 8C Competizione. This is an opportunity to add this very rare 8C Competizione to your collection.
