My family and I are all going to visit Italy next summer, so far we don't where we're going to visit or anything. My parents want to visit Rome, Venice, and Florence. Other than that they are open to anything and they said that they would be willing to go visit Maranello.

How far away is Modena from Maranello?

How easy is it to get there without a car? They want to travel by bus and train so they can see the countryside.

Would it be better to stay in Modena and just travel to Maranello? Or to stay a night in Maranello?

I want to get my picture taken in front of the factory, eat at one of the famous restaurants, visit the museum, visit the Ferrari store.

Just stay in Modena. They probably have a bus to Maranello. It's pretty close. Eat at the Cavallino restaurant across the street from the factory. You may want to go to Maranello by yourself so you can get the full experience as some of the rest of your family may not care. Make sure you check the event calendar as the area can get pretty busy during the various festivals they have. Have fun!

I went to Maranello in April.

Catch the train to Modena. From there Maranello is about a half hour bus ride.

As you exit Modena station you can see the place to buy bus tickets. There are signs saying what you need to do to get to the Ferrari Factory.

You get a bus from Modena station (strange buses, they are powered by electricity and have tram like fixtures) to a Bus terminal where you change buses and get on the one that heads to Maranello.

There is no where at Modena to store luggage so I had to take it with me. I ended up leaving it at a Hotel in Maranello behind the Ferrari store while I went in the Museum and the Ferrari Store.

You are not allowed in the Ferrari Factory itself. Instead, directly opposite is the Ferrari Store and a 3 min walk behind that is the Museum (can't miss it)

Also wonder out to the Main road and walk down a bit and you can see an elevated view of the Fiarano Test Track. When I was there Schumi was testing the F1 car, man it was soo loud.

I went there last November. Ditto to everything said.

One more thing to add though... don't go on a Sunday. So much was closed.

Try to sit on the right hand side of the bus. When you enter Maranello and look to the right you'll get a great view of the Fiorano test track. the bus stops outside the factory gates. If you cross the road and go into the F1 Shop to the right of the Cavallino they have free maps of Maranello so you'll be able to find things like the Gilles Villeneuve Memorial and the Enzo Ferrari memorial.

If you are going to stay overnight in Maranello the Domus is a nice Hotel and it has the Enzo Ferrari Memorial right in front of it. Another decent hotel is the Planet, which is above the Ferrari Store. From your balcony you can see into the factory. When I stayed their the air-con wasn't working so I had quite an uncomfortable night!

Might as well get a tour of the factory while you are there. Talk to your local Ferrari dealer about setting this up for you.

There are taxis from Modena to Maranello, its less than 15 minutes as I recall.

I believe you can take the train but I would rent a nice car, You cant do 120 mph + on the highways in the USA. In Italy the Cops wont blink an eyelash at you for doing 120 Mph. & even if they do, Hey, you dont speak Italian, & they let tourists off easy :)

I've heard they are insane out on the autostrada, from a few friends and countless CAR articles- is this true? Or is it just as bad as any major freeway in America?

In Modena, stay at Hotel Real Fini, it is the official Ferrari Hotel.... contact me and I will give you the name of the driver I use in Modena, speaks perfect english and knows all of the right places...

He can take you to a PRIVATE Maserati museum that is incredible...

Contact your Ferrari dealer to arrange a visit or contact me and I can arrange directly from the factory...

    Have a great time!

William H is correct it is a short cab ride and may be more convienent than a bus. I have been there a few times on company (Ferrari) business and they consider the Cavillino Resturant for the tourists (but it's not a bad place). If your time there is limited and you can go to only one dinner I would go to the same resturant they go to, it is called Montanas. It is just past the track at Fiorano on the opposite side of the road from the factory. Anybody in town can give you exact directions. He has a world class collection of F1 driver memorabilia. The actual driver suits, helmets, gloves etc. that were actually used by the drivers, it should not be missed. That is the place they go eat when they are in town. Also if you are a Ferrari owner you can contact FNA to make an appointment for a tour of the factory, in my experience it is more reliable than trying to do it at some of the dealers.

Ditto on Montana's , good advice! I have had lunch at Cavallino when Luca was at the table across from me, that was cool!

The Ferrari Galleria expansion will be completed by the time you get there. Hors Ligne is the nicest Ferrari shop, but the Factory store has most (not all) of the latest leather and clothing...

I just got back from my trip to the factory. I stayed in the Hotel Domus in downtown Maranello. There is also a very nice and new hotel called Planet Hotel next door to the Ferrari Store. The factory tour for clients starts around 10:30am lasts about 2hrs which makes it perfect timing to get lunch accross the street right afterwards.

They have already started assembly of the F430 and were finishing up the last few Enzos. The 612 and 575m v12 lines are moving steady and the final push to complete the last of the 360 models has maxed out the v8 assembly line so some of the 360s are being built by the v12 line crew.

Saw a yellow enzo, yellow f430, 360cs and 612 on Fiorano. The MC12 is amazing in person saw one on a special pallet jack being wheeled around the mfg floor.

Wonderful trip of course no photos allowed on the mfg floor but it was a sight to behold.

    You are correct

Germany and Italy are insane when it comes to driving. It's so awesome. If the conditions allow it, there is actually no speed limit. It's cool to get overtaken by someone doing 170+

Although you are not supposed to take photos you are not actually searched or asked to hand cameras or phones in at the start of the tour. I took a couple of quick pics at the end of the tour of the Ferrari sculpture, where an F1 car is suspended in interconnecting rods. I only took the picture because I realised that others on the tour had been happily snapping away without being asked to stop. Make sure you don't have a flash and be descreet.

Just confirming what other people are saying.

Maranello is 15 mins from Modena, we stayed in the Planet Hotel opposite factory/Cavallino restuarant and store. The galleria is 2 mins walk and various vantage points to peer through the fence at Fiorano are all within 5 mins walk. Lots of Ferrari based shops in the area. There is another famous restuarant just back over the bridge (the name escapes me atm) but would be a 10 min walk.

I dont know how you will be travelling around Italy but Modena is on the main rail route between Milan & Bologna (nearest Airport)

Maranello is a great town. I have been there many times and now have quite a few friends in town.

Make sure you say hello to Paolo at Hors Linge (great store and a great guy). Tell him Dino from AZ said to say hi.

I can't imagine not having a car in Italy (or Europe for that matter). The driving is great...and the scenery spectacular............Rent a car!!

The restaurant just over the bridge is Montana. Great food and wines.

We've stayed at the Planet Hotel (Factory Tour last October) and a couple times at the Best Western Domus which is right in the center of Maranello. Price there is quite reasonable. Be sure to visit the Maranello Cafe (in the square across from the Domus).

We've never used the rail system in Italy, but have rented cars in Milan, Rome and Bologna. You are really missing out if you don't rent a car and experience a fairly high performance rental car on the Autostrada! The car gives you the freedom to go see more car related stuff than I am sure that the train affords. For instance, you can go to Imola and to the Maranello Rosso Museum in San Marino.

    Have fun!

    Carol
