Last Sun. on my way to a car show I noticed on the freeway that my gas pedal is not returning fully to its rest position as in lots of slack on the cable (sticking) . I was only half a mile from the car show but can't go on as the RPM will rise so high. I pulled over and retract the throttle body to its idle position and drove my car the rest of the way crawling until I got in the park. Right away I removed mats, center console and the plastic cover for the pedal and found this (1st pic) I had to improvise something temporarily which I did, 2nd pic just so I can get home (45 miles away)

I believe my cable is still the original one. So, I already ordered the new cable yesterday and received it today (superfast from GT Car Parts) I've never change the cable before on a 308. Is this a straight forward job or is there special techniques I need to know? Does anyone has an instruction on how to replace the accelerator cable? Thanks so much.

I had my clutch and throttle cable replaced at my major couple years ago. I figured they were already over 20 years old so I replace them now. I'm even thinking of replacing the cable to my front and rear bonnets just to eliminate future problems. Also check the pulley for both the throttle and clutch for wear and lube as needed.

John, the pulleys and mechanism of the throttle body has been clean and lubed. My Clutch cable is good but, I have to replace my pressure plate.

    Straight forward.
Removal of the oil filter and the cross over hose from one valve cover to the other valve cover will give you room to get a stubby 13mm wrench under the plenum.

Feeding the new cable in is done in 2 stages, one from the engine bay and the second stage underneath the car to feed it into the tube.

    That is pretty much it.

Wow! thanks Mitchell, easier than I thought. Do I need to remove any cover under the car? I was told that there are two separate tube (a gap) that I have to feed the cable through underneath.

As a note the window switches are $7.00 each on eBay and you can get illuminated ones for $11.00

No cover needs to be removed. The gap is under neath the car. Feed the cable from the engine compartment until you hear it clank under the car, crawl underneath and feed the cable through the other tube to the front.

Okay, yesterday I finally replaced the cable and Mitchell is right it wasn't that hard to do. Anyway, from the pic, you can see how bad my cable is compare to the new one. The cable linkage are all adjusted properly and the feels so smooth the foot.

My advise to everyone is, if it feels not so smooth on the foot replace it or at least inspect it before it snap on you while driving. One of the best $65 investment.

    Mitchell,

Is it the same for a GT4? Thinking of replacing mine next service?

    Thanks

Not the same cable but the same process. It is a little easier on the GT4 because you just remove the air box and the cable is right there.

This may be a late coming question........but my 86 Mondial 3.2 has a tube / conduit for the the accelerator cable coming out out of the engine bay compartment, behind the back seats, down to the gas tank area. Then it disappears into a channel with a welded steel cover shared with the heater hoses running to the front radiator. There are (4) black rubber plugs that fill 1-1/4" dia access holes that line up with this channel and are spaced about every 10" or so.

Does anyone know if the conduit runs continuous to the drivers floorboard. I dont see a spot underneath where it starts and stops and I am very hesitant to start pulling the old cable out until I know I can slip feed the new back in. I almost think I should tie a string on the end of the old on to help aid with pulling the new one through. Any ideas or pics would be appreciated.

I am not familiar with the Mondial, but see nothing wrong with attaching the new cable to the end of the old cable or string. I've done this several times sometimes it was not necessary but at least once it was....... Good luck with your project.

Jk, have tried asking this a question at the Mondial sections? I’m sure someone there has done it before.
