Anyone ever have this problem? Distinct clicking noise from the engine when the AC is on. When you turn AC off, it goes away. Also does it when the air has been running foe awhile...Thanks all

    Strange. :):)

So there is a noise when the a/c is running. Yes? :):)

Noise goes away when a/c turned off? Yes? :):)

There is the same noise when the a/c is off, but the a/c fan is running? Yes? :):)

Folks, the Air Conditining compressor has an electomagnetic clutch, that clicks on and off when the compressor is needed to come on-line. This is driven by the demand for cold air and the thermostatic control (knob in Mondials and elenctronic LED on the 348). Colder the air, the longer the compressor is needed on-line.

The sound is a distinctly mechanical sound. It should "click" immediately upon pressing the AC button, and disengage when selecting "off". Sometimes the disengagement is not as audible as the engagement.

Thanks for clearing that up mate. :):)

What you're describing is called "short-cycling." The most common reason for it is the system is low on refrigerant. :):)

Throw some a/c gauges on it mate and see what the pressures are doing. ;);)

Had the pressure checked and the system is full. Blowing cold air. Now the clicking is intermittent but stays on until you shut the compressor off. Could the compressor be on the way out?

    Hhhmmm..........:):)

Perhaps the a/c relays need cleaning?

Maybe the a/c clutch has an internal short?

Low pressure switch could be faulty, causing the compressor to cut in and out?

Suprisingly enough, compressors should last the life of the car. If they are not serviced correctly, (meaning not enough oil or a/c system gets overcharged and the compressor has to 'lug' on start up), they will not last long. But I think your compressor is ok, the problem lies elsewhere mate. :):)

Something electrical, if it is full of gas. :):)

I recall someone on the forum had a similar problem and it turned out to be a faulty ground at the compressor. They installed a ground strap to the compressor and that took care of the noise.

sorry to dredge up an old thread but atleast i did a search! lol

my a/c is making the same noise but also kind of squeels a bit blows cold for the 10 seconds i can stand the sound. i left it run once and it blew the hidden 30amp.

any help with this guys would be great. i am actually a universal refrigeration tech but dont deal with cars ever. have guages 134A etc.

this sounds like a compressor issue not a ref. issue but??? your colaborate knowledge is far mor than my pea brain!
