    Quick question...

At almost every '50s, '60s, and '70s, etc. car show that I go to, they always play "Runaround Sue" by Dion over the speakers. lol.

Is it just shows in the area where I live or do they do this at car shows all over the country?

I never hear this song anywhere else, except for car shows!

For those of you who don't know what this song is, here you go - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yq6_4qKnOJA

"Run Around Sue," and all that other doo-wop music is left over from the few decades of the "cruise-in" scene being dominated by people who were young when those kinds of songs were popular. Kind of a perpetual "American Graffiti" thing going on, even though times have changed, and there are far more car enthusiasts with classic cars who don't care for that music and don't subscribe to the mentality of the people who like it.

I personally can't stand it. That music is just as obnoxious as any punk, rap, rock, pop, or country music of any era, and not the golden standard of pop/rock that many of that age think it is. Last year, I was at British Car Day at Ft. Meigs in Toledo, and there was "Run Around Sue" and "Big Girls Don't Cry" and all that other screechy noise blaring over the PA system. WHY?!?!? Why would anyone play that annoying crap at a British car show, the majority of whose attendees are of the age where they would have listened to the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and The Who? Why would they play '57 Chevy music at a '67 MGB car show?

Then I was unfortunate enough to have to walk near the tent from where the music was blaring, and I saw an old guy who appeared to be the DJ. He looked more like the age/type you would find at the Nifties Fifties cruise-in. Thankfully, for the brief amount of time I was at this year's show, the music was more appropriate.

At Eyes On Design in Detroit yesterday, the music was an eclectic mix more suitable for and representative of the different eras and cultures of cars present.

Grant, I'm sorry you have to continually suffer through repetitions of "Run Around Sue" and the screechings of Frankie Vali and the audible huffings and gyrations of Elvis Presley. Cleveland is always one of the last cities to change with the times, and Clevelanders, as genuine and well-intentioned as they are, tend to be stuffy and stodgy without realizing they are -- for the better as well as for the worse. I won't rant about that now, but it would make good discussion some time. I look forward to the day when that generation get too old and stops monopolizing the way classic car events are conducted, because it's not much fun for younger people (of which I count myself, and I am in my thirties!). Until then, I'll keep my cruise-in attendance to a minimum (I really only go when friends coax me), and will seek out (and create) events and shows that respect people of all ages (not just the geriatrics).

    Cheers,

    Tony
