That does look sweet. How does it perform? Did you notice a difference?
I wonder if the adapters I have will fit.. Hmmm

From what Eric was saying big reds don't fit with the 550 rotors. Spider 348 stated they fit with stoptech rotors. I'm wondering if the brackets I got from Johan will work with big reds and stoptech rotors.
If I can't find the 965 rotors I'll have to go with big reds which I prefer anyways. I'd have to buy new rotors which I can live with. The bracket is the question??

Johan has used big blacks which are the same as big reds.

    eric:
"- 550 Maranello discs : upgrade from 300mm X 28mm to 330mm X 32mm. They are not so expensive and are a direct bolt on
    - 964RS / 965 Turbo front callipers : they have a much bigger casting than the original ones, and 36mm / 44mm pistons diameters. Used in conjunction with 322mm discs on the Porsche, they can be used with 330mm discs, however they reach their limit there. Big red callipers (993TT) cannot be used because the track of the 550 disc is not large enough.
    - Brackets from Racers Edge : they allow to change from a calliper axial mount to a radial mount. Designed for 911/944 brake upgrade, they need some slight mod to fit the F355 front hub, and place the calliper at the correct position."

Eric said the above right at the start of this thread, Johan later disproved this by using 550 front discs with Brembo/Porsche Big Blacks and his own designed caliper adapters.

Big Blacks are just Big Reds which are just mounted at the front of the hub, rather than the rear on the Porsche applications.

Below is what Johan used. What Johan used from what I understand is the 965 turbo look/rs calipers.
Big reds are the 993 turbo calipers.
    Am I wrong?

Big reds: 1996-1998 Porsche 911 (993) Turbo -Front
    part # 99335142510, 99335142610

Johan refers to his calipers as Big Blacks on post 43, if that is true then they are dimensionally the same as Big Reds.

Apikol 928 GTS Big Black Brake Caliper (Set)

This photo may clarify which is which, it seems the Big Blacks/Big Reds are used on a 322 x 32 disc so the 550s front 330 x 32 disc should not be a problem regardless.

Per Johan "As far as I know the 965 calipers is the only one that works, and the brackets were made specifically for them."
I'll keep on the search for 965 calipers

Are you really saving anything by doing this instead of the stop-tech or movit kits?

Pair of Big Red copies are £470, a pair of Brembo 550 front discs are £150 and the caliper adaptors are £100 so all in you can have a brand new 330mm Brembo big brake kit for £720 / $1200 so half the price of an off the shelf set up here in the UK

    Big Red copies?

The genuine article run $800 per caliper here which would make the whole setup in the $2k+ range or close to a stop-tech kit...

fwiw, part numbers to look for (front):
    red
    993.351.425.10 (993TT)
    993.351.426.10 (993TT)

    black
    928-351-423-03 (928GTS)
    928-351-424-03 (928GTS)

How do the Stop-Tech's compare to the more expensive Brembos? I'm guessing performance is comparable as they're both in the same league...but I see a decent enough price difference to make me wonder if the Brembos have a little something extra beside heaps of brake dust and squealing like a pig, like the OEMs do.

I posted a link to a company that make exact copies for half the price that a lot of the Porsche people use instead of originals, and another that are even cheaper again.

Horses for courses, you pay your money you make your choice, the thread title is after all a "not so expensive brake upgrade for 355"

Why are some people so argumentative on this site for the sake of it, I have gone out of my way to help and provide links.

I didn't see the link to the copies, I wasn't trying to be argumentative, just trying to figure out how they're cheaper and/or better...How good are those calipers? Could be a really good deal if they're up to snuff but replica calipers make me a little nervous.

I agree that copies of such important components need to be approached with caution, but they are a German company which is usually a good sign, they have been selling them for a good few years now which is also another good indicator of quality.

As long as they have been properly cast, use decent seals and pistons, then the design is proven via brembo. The alternative is a used set of originals for the same price as new copies and give them a refurb like Johan did.

I haven't been able to find any testimonials (one way or the other) on them. If there were some people using them in racing or track situations and they were happy, it might be a good alternative.

So where can I get a set of the adapter plates to mount the calipers?

I think the 944 adapters work with some adjustment (did I read that in this thread or somewhere else? edit: in the first post, duh), not sure which ones though.

Racer's Edge -- Racer's Edge Big Brake adapter blocks

Now that I think about it, the calipers on my 944 turbo look exactly like the calipers on my 355. Next time I have one of them apart I'll have to compare them as basically that'd mean you could run pretty much any porsche caliper on the 355 with the correct adapters and rotors...

I plan to run the big red set up with 550 330mm discs up front and then 550 300mm rear discs using the 355s front calipers. I have bought all the discs and a set of Porsche adapters. The rear discs need a bit of machining to fit but allow use of the stock 355 handbrake shoes.

I have a used pair of Race Calipers...4 Titanium Pistons(2ea 38mm x 2ea 41mm...trailing/leading) with Titanium Heat Shield at Brake Pad Bridge. These are better than the Porsche Big Red/Black.
You'll need to machine your own adapter...they also come with the SS Braided Hoses and Pads
