There appears to be an unusually large number of top end classic Ferraris up in public auctions at the moment, coming off the back of 2-3 GTO sales at the end of 2023. At the moment, there's at least one or two 250 GTOs, a Dino 206SP, a 400 Mondial, several 250 SWBs and Lussos etc etc. Several earlier models too and some serious Maseratis. Maybe I have been blind to how many of these change hands each year….but it feels like a larger amount of top-end metal is being sold in a short space of time than usual.

Is this the cost of leverage beginning to talk? Are people offloading at what they feel might be peak values for a while?

I havent looked at the data but if true, could be as simple as collectors getting too old to enjoy. No reason to hold until one dies.

I started selling a lot of my collections (not cars) several years ago as I got older.

I suspect demographics plays a big role. We're all getting older, at least those of us still alive.

Is there data to suggest this? I dont feel like there are more than in the past few years...We also have much easier access to listings and information than before. Finally as you said, GTOs are for sale but they are also being bought and most likely at a significantly higher price than their previous transaction.

Only on F-chat for 5/6 years or so….but 30 years in market and building knowledge. F-chat one of many sources. I have spent far too many hours flicking through classic car mags, browsing the internet, talking to other collectors, two of whom have collections of 20+ cars etc etc. Thought it worth a comment / question as I’ve never witnessed quite so many of the very top-end cars coming at the same time.

Demographics yes, but just wondered if a few people just beginning to reduce their exposure? I’m a long term believer in the likely long-term value (and enjoyment) from rare and ‘not being made any more’ assets, whether it’s paintings, 1930s shotguns or classic cars. But they don’t go up in a straight line and just wondered if a wobble was coming. They’ve all held up crazily well over past 2-3 years despite wobbles in virtually every other asset class I can think off. As a member of the ‘buyer on the dips’ demographic, this isn’t just a theoretical question! But I guess that any on here who is a seller, or is thinking of becoming a seller…..isn’t going to call a peak…hardly in their best interests to do so!

Yes….sold for significantly more than cost…but sales of GTOs in recent very public auctions probably didn’t reach quite the levels the sellers had hoped for and lower than much less public private sales achieved previously.

There are currently five 250 GTOs on the market.
    How many do you need?

Nothing in the Ferrari world surprises me anymore. Have seen it all over the last 50+ years.
