There have been many threads that answer the question "What does 'Scuderia Ferrari' mean?" Like this one, and this one, and this one, and this one, and this one. It, of course, refers to the racing team; but most translate it to mean literally "Ferrari Stables" and loosely "Team Ferrari".

In this nice web article on the Enzo, they gave the following explanation that actually seems far more insightful:

Scuderia Ferrari - This is the name of Ferrari's racing division, and was the name of the original racing club Enzo Ferrari formed in 1929. "Scuderia" comes from scudo, which means shield. In Italy's past, armored knights would fight in competitions, represented by a shield (or coat of arms) from a certain region or town. These regional teams came to be known as scuderia.

Can anyone confirm or deny that? That's the best sounding answer I've heard. However, the closest I've found to confirmation is Strasse's answer in this post.

Yeah, but in the context of 'scudo' being a shield, than a 'scuderia' would be a place where shields are made or sold. 'Scuderia' by the dictionary is 'stable' (as in team) but maybe Enzo was making a bit of a play on words with the shield shape. Many car teams in Italy (even amateurs) refer to themselves as "A.S. whatever" as in "Auto Scuderia whatever".

But where does the use of "scuderia" to mean "stable/team" come from? Perhaps from the explanation above... in the days of knights, "scuderia" was used to mean a team that fought under a particular "scudo" / shield. Thus, the Ferrari use of it was in the traditional sporting sense, rather than something derived from its cavallino mascot.

Good point; that somewhat further justifies that it has nothing to do with "stables/horses"; but rather, the traditional sense of a team fighting under a shield, born in the days of knights.

It is my understanding Enzo adopted the cavallino rampante well before the shield (scudetto) and the term "Scuderia Ferrari." If we're debating whether or not scuderia means "team" or "stable," Enzo may have meant the term to be BOTH "team" and "stable". "Team" since he was obviously racing and "stable" since his main logo was the cavallino rampante.
