I was buying a cheddar cheese recommended by my local Publix deli manager, called Hoffman's Super Sharp. Its a division of Kraft. Suddenly Publix stopped carrying it, deli managers were vocally complaining, they even recommended that I go to Walmart. Sure enough, Walmart had it for 50% of the price. Now Walmart has replaced the Hoffmans with some crap, probably a higherr margin. I called a few Walmarts and every deli department said the same thing, the replacement is terrible compared to the Hoffman's. This is not some aritisan cheese, it is around $6/pound, but just really tasty. I could live on cheese, mushrooms, and champagne. Anyone have an idea where to buy Hoffman's Super Sharp?
Sorry Ron, but I am not into cheddar cheeses. All I can say is that Macy's in Aventura used to have a huge selection of cheeses and if you do not find it at places like Winn Dixie or Whole Food, I would try there.
How about the Cheese Course? http://www.thecheesecourse.com/locations.cfm You could also send an email to the food editor at the Sun Sentinel. They have a lost and found article for this kind of stuff.
This is the place that makes it: Churny Company, Inc Weyauwega, WI 54983 800-343-1976 If you call them, they might be able to tell you the name of their local distributor for FL This is what I found on google: Central Area & National Accounts Nick Kolliniatis 708-460-9521 South Chuck Porter 941-721-3220 Corporate Office Churny Cheese Co. 847-646-5500 I found it online at a supermarket chain in NJ that I go to, but I never knew that they had a website where you could buy it. http://shop.mywebgrocer.com/shop.aspx?&sid=39976461&sid_guid=09362ad5-194d-4f11-9047-fac660f98e3c&strid=EB3F1516&shopurl=ProductDetail.aspx&pid=248978&clk_src=seopd&ns=1 I'm going up there next month and can bring some back with me,or if you are really desparate, let me know and can see if I can have my brother pick some up at the Shop Rite that is down the street from him and pack it in dry ice and send it to you.
Maybe at sweetbay? I am in the Tampa area and thier stores have a great selection of deli meats & cheeses.
Thank you for trying. I already spoke to their reps for the South. Walmart and Publix suck. No place else to get this stuff in Florida. Tried something called Cabot......OK, but not close. And cheddar in El Paso is like finding a woman that does not mind being awakened at 2:30 AM for sex. I am in withdrawal.
RP, Where about are you located, I've got connections in Publix. (and the correct numbers to call to reach the buyers)
I am in Nj and went to the local Shop Rite today, but couldnt find it.The store was all wiped out after the 4th and a lot of the shelves were empty. I will check some of the other ones around here to see if they have it. Maybe they will get more stuff in after the holiday. I will be going to Costco up here and will see if they are still carrying it. since I noticed their stores carry differant brands of some products depending on the location. If I find some I will let you know. I'm driving back, so I can get some and bring it with me. It is a lot better than trying to put it in my carry on luggage in a plane with dry ice and having to explain it to security!
The Churney rep called me back, said that Walmart will continue to carry it in prepackaged form. I did find a Walmart Neighborhood store in El Paso, that still had the deli version, brought some back with me. Thanks again for looking, but I know Costco and Sam's do not carry it.
Went to a Shop Rite today and found it in the section where they keep prepackaged meats, cheeses etc. in the front of the store instead of the dairy isle where I was looking before. They make a bunch of varieties, like horseradish flavor, etc. It was even on sale for $1.99 for a 8 ounce package. I love supermarkets in NJ, there is competition and no monopolies like Winn Dixie and Publix so you can great bargains on stuff. Chicken breasts were 1.69 a pound a week ago. Guess they were trying to get everyone in to buy their 4th of July items. Ron- I'll send you a PM before I come back to Florida to see how much and what flavors you want.
Thanks! I do not get back from Mexico until next week. What I am looking for is the Super Sharp. If you have a way to keep it cold, just one for now. It gets really sloppy if it gets to be room temperature.
Great minds think alike...... BTW, good thing Tom found it. I was going to look on 'www.sharp-cheddar-cheese-chat dot com'........
I'll bring the Super Sharp back with me, since I will be driving back and have some coolers that I use to keep water, soda and sandwiches for the drive. I dont know how long I am going to be in NJ for since I am helping my brother take care of my mother who has terminal cancer. I got laid off and figure I would rather use the time now and help out while I am getting unemployment, severence, etc. instead of having to take family leave time in the future and not get anything at all. Figure it is better to take time off to be with her now while I am able to. I have been staying about 2 months in NJ and then go to FL for a month to get my mail and check on my house, go on interviews, etc. so I will let you know when I will be back. Every time I come up here I have to get My-T-Fine pudding since it isnt available in FL and my friends wife uses it to make stuff and claims that the other brands dont taste as good. Will also bring Taylors Pork Roll back too, since it only comes in presliced packets when I can find it in FL. Also had to bring Tasty-Cakes to Texas a few years ago since my Uncle said he cant get them there, and used to bring cases of Coors back to NJ from Texas in my suitcase when I was in college, since it wasnt available in NJ.
