What size wrench (Allen?) fits the oil drain plug on an '86 328?
    Thanks,
    Brian

Allen? It is a socket on my 87 328.

    Dave,
He must be talking about the drain plug for the transmission. That takes a 10mm allen. The fill plugs for the transmission and transfer case is a 12mm allen.

No, actually the oil drain plug on my '86 is an Allen wrench. It is also vertically oriented, rather than horizontal as on '87's and newer. Unfortuately, the manual does not state what size it is.
The same is true for the transmission plugs. So the sizes you gave for those will be helpful for me also.

I did not realize that there was any difference between the 86 and newer 3.2 engines. Live and learn.

I believe it is a 12mm allen wrench. They switched to bolts with a new sump design early in the 328 run (chassis #65001 Euro and #65101 US).

That would make sense. I've got chassis # 64711 (US), build date May '86.
I'll see about getting my hands on a 12mm allen wrench to try.
    Thanks!!

Both Ace Hardware and AutoZone should have the larger allen key "sockets" for a half inch ratchet wrench. I got a set of 10,11,and 12mm allens from A.Z. Sears probably have them too, but you might have to buy them in a larger set.

You may want to try Harbor freight. When I changed my oils, I needed those sockets too and HF had a whole set of long conventional allen wrenches for about $10.00. Took the 14mm cut off a long length with an abrasive wheel and put it into a socket. There is plenty stock there to make a long and a short socket.
